Hi Everyone!

I have been reading this newsgroup for the past 2 weeks and I really admire so
many people here.  I am new to being overweight...because I have crohn's
disease (which has been in remission).  When it is flaring, I have diarrhea 10
to 20 times a day and can't keep weight on!  I have gained about 30 pounds in
the past 2 years and can't seem to lose it. I am only 5'1" and I can feel
"every" pound of it.   I am on the treadmill for 30 or more minutes about 5
days a week.  I go swing dancing every Friday night where I get a good workout.
I have switched to splenda, cut my carbs, try to eat more protein, etc.  I
can't seem to lose a pound!  I am getting frustrated.  I am 57 years old, have
an underactive thyroid (I take synthroid for it) and I need help!  Any advice
for me?  Thanks in advance!....MaryAnn C

Well, it would make sense to me to get the medical issues under control.  Is
the thyroid issue under control with your current meds?  Are you gaining
weight because you could get away with eating more calories during active
crohn's, with all the diarrhea?  And now you're not losing all those
calories?  You should be able to lose at about 10 cal x bodyweight in lbs.
When I'm in losing mode, I shoot for about 1200 calories, but that's more
like 9 cal per lb.  How many calories ARE you eating?  Have you tried
tracking them obsessively for a couple days?  You might want to try

Hi!

You hit upon a few good points.  Yes, when my crohns is active I can eat
anything I want.  I have trouble maintaining my weight then.  After having
crohns for over 30 years and having had chronic flares this weight issue is new
to me!  I am going for a check up in two weeks to see if my thyroid is under
control.  I have to admit that I don't count calories and that some days I am
better than others.  I like vegetables, pasta, chicken, fish, etc.  I rarely
eat sweets.  I do like a glass of red wine or two in the evening to help me
sleep and I am sure this isn't helping my weight.  I am stopping this habit in
the hopes that it will help me lose weight.  I just pray I can sleep.  I have
been an insomniac since my 20's.

I will try tracking my calories to see how many calories I am taking in...Thank
you for your suggestions!  I appreciate your reponse........MaryAnn C

hi maryann:

you're doing great with exercise, especially the swing dancing.

I'll second the suggestion about recording everything you eat at
fitday.com or some other program, or even just writing it down in a
notepad. knowing how many calories you are consuming is key to losing
weight for many people.

as always, YMMV.

Welcome to the ng, MaryAnn!  I am glad to hear that the crohn's is in
remission.  It sounds like you have a good plan with regards to exercise
since you are doing some :-)  What do you usually eat?

It is SO hard to stay motivated.  I know somebody else with Crohn's
disease
and she's really getting in to her weight work.  Doing weights packs
on muscle which burns calories, plus does all kinds of wonderful other
things.  I'm glad you can use a treadmill because you need aerobics,
too.  Personally walking is a laxative for me anyway so I would be
afraid of it if I had your problem.  Remember, what you're doing
will also ward off some kinds of cancer, osteoporosis, and dementia
as well as fixing your cholesterol and BP.  You'll save thousands
of dollars in drugs and other medical treatments this way, as well
as feel good without popping a lot of pills and worrying about side
effects.  Exercise has the best bang for the buck of any medical
treatment especially combined with healthy eating.
