how tall are you and what is your weight.

I am sorry that you eat so poorly. If you buy cheap food at grocery
stores instead of slimfast and cheesy strings etc, you may be able to
save a bundle of money.

Anyway, count all your calories honestly, make sure that you undereat,
and be patient.

Other people may suggest something about "starvation mode", which
supposedly magically creates energy out of nowhere, and prevents you
from losing weight at very low calories eaten. I tend to be
uncredulous about this theory and would not put much stock in it.

My suggestions:

1. Log all your food
2. Eat better food instead of those scary chemical products
3. Exercise more
4. Be patient

im 5.4 foot, 13 stone, 3 stone overweight, i got a low budget to spend, and
dont like veg what else is there to eat
i do keep a food diary, and my drinks make it all add up, as i work its VERY
hard to take meals to work, as i only get a 15 min break for lunch, thats
why i take slimfast its easy and i get chance to drink it, by the time i
leave for my break its time to go bak.

Well, you only get out what you put in, when it comes to weight loss.

So, if you do not like vegetables, do not exercise, eat junk food etc,
do not be surprised if your weight loss efforts do not work out very
well. You have great excuses, absolutely, I sympathize etc, but
excuses do not help with losing weight.

If you log all your food and drinks, can you calculate how many
calories do you get per week? Try using excel or fitday.com.

Do you have any thyroid or other unusual medical problems?

Try approaching this problem from the top down. Write down how much
you are eating, how much you weigh etc, see if you are even eating at
a weight loss producing level given your exercise. Make sure that you
do not cheat in your food log.

Some medical problems make people lose weight very slowly, such as
thyroid problems as an example.

All in all, eating less, even when not exercising, always works if you
can stick to it. Concentration camp pictures are the proof. Sometimes
it works, but with bad side effects. (again check out the
concentration camp pictures) Possible problems include not losing fat
first and losing mass in all other organs like muscles and bones and
internal organs. Or, such as succumbing to horrible cravings because
your low calorie junk food diet is very low in nutrients. Or plainly
getting sick due to lack of vitamins and fiber.

If you eat 1200 calories the way you are eating, you are likely to
have problems even if you lose weight. That is so if my impression
that you are relying on junk food and overly processed foods is
correct.

Anyway, hang around, maybe you can come up with some decent ideas
after discussing your problems. You are obese and so getting rid of
that extra fat is quite important for your health.

Good luck

When you get paid do this.

Take 4 envelopes.   Put cash in each envelope that you would spend on
groceries ($40 or whatever).  Put a label on each envelope:
Week 1
Week 2
Week 3
Week 4

Each week you do groceries with the money for that week.   If you have
some left over - WHOO HOO...

If you buy bread, lunch meat, cheese, you can spend less than $10 and
get a whole week's worth of lunches.

I went to the store yesterday, bought bread, meat, cheese, salad
makings, fruits and veggies and soda and spent $24.   The amount of
food I have will last me close to 2 weeks, and the stuff I bought will
stay good for that long too.

If you can afford to, buy bulk packages of meats (the way groceries
work is you get a discount on the per pound price with the larger
volumes).   Bring it home and portion it out into more reasonable
portions for you, freeze and use when necessary.

A couple times a week cook up food and make extras.  Portion that into
individual serving sizes and freeze them.   Take those for frozen
dinner.

Make a whole pot of spagetti and it will cost you about $6.  There's
enough there to portion out into at least 6 or 7 meals.   You can't
tell me that you can buy frozen meals for less than  $1 that are
healthy.

Believe me, I've lived on shoe string budgets before, and I had a son
to raise too, working full time, and going to school full time.   It
was definately cheaper to buy fresh foods and cook them to live off of
crappy frozen processed, chemical filled, nutrient lacking frozen
foods.

If you want to lose weight you have to make it a priority in your
life.   Otherwise you will not be successful.

From what I see the OP is in England. You would be hard pressed to buy 2
weeks work of groceries for $24 in the UK, even in the very very cheap
shops. I doubt very much she could feed herself for one week for that in the
UK.

Last year I lost 4 stone, why did I stop? Because I could not afford to buy
fresh lean meat, fruit and veg. My weekly shopping for 3 people was costing
over ?70 and that was being very frugal and not buying the best cuts of
meat.  When you weekly income is ?200, I just couldn't afford it. Now I buy
junk and it costs me ?40 a week to feed 3 people...

A survey came out last week in the UK. Its showed the 20 fattest towns and
the 20 slimmest. The 20 fattest towns were ALL in poor areas the 20 thinnest
towns were ALL in the rich areas. Prove that obesity and poor diet IS linked
to income.

Dr Marc Farr, a consultant for Experian, told BBC News Online: "You might
think wealthy people would overindulge or eat richer foods.

"But they have better education about health issues. They will also have the
money to buy lower-fat or organic foods."

He said cheaper healthy foods needed to be made more widely available to the
less well-off.

"If they are going to buy a loaf of bread, they may well have to choose the
cheapest - and that is likely to be a large white loaf, rather than a brown
organic one

actually, I have found we spend less on food now that I am dieting.
Because the only way I can do it is to plan out in advance what we are
eating every day.  My partner and I sit down once a week, plan our
meals for the week (what we are eating and who is cooking which day)
then make our shopping list from that.  I reckon we spend £30 - 40 a
week in the supermarket, and another £10 or so at the greengrocers,
for a family of 3.  (Tho maybe it makes a difference that we don't buy
meat?)

What really saves the money is that the likelyhood of not knowing what
to have for tea and so going to the supermarket for ready made pizza
or pasta sauces or burgers or whatever is much reduced now.  We have
re-inforced our commitment to make meals from scratch most nights, and
also we both make our own lunches for work (sandwiches, pasta salads
etc) instead of buying them from shops.   And not buying biscuits,
cakes, crisps, etc, that helps too lol.

One thing that struck me about the original post was mentioning she
only gets 15 mins for lunch.  If she is in the UK, she should take a
look at the ACAS site for advice on legal entitlements for working
hours and breaks, because she's entitled to min 20 mins break a day

Greetings and welcome.

frozen meals and prepared meals are far more expensive than preparing
simple meals with fresh ingredients.

Just because you get paid once a month doesn't mean you only go to the
grocery once a month.

is there a grocery near your home or job that you can walk to once a
week? that will save money, help you get fresher, healthier meals and
get you some exercise.

My 10 cent healthy 400 calorie meals - 1/2 cup oatmeal (1 1/2 cups
cooked) mixed with 3 tablespoons of peanut butter (preferably
natural).  Generally I add cinnamon and artifical sweetener.
Benefits: 1) oatmeal is a whole grain, and lowers cholesterol.  2)
nuts (peanut butter or almond butter) are high in fat but healthy. Key
step for you to make progress - exercise more.  Second super cheap
healthy meal/snack - shredded wheat (buy generic) 2 oz, peanuts (or
almonds, walnuts) 2 oz. Again, whole grain plus nuts.

Our grocery bill went down substantially when I stopped buying cold
cereals.  We eat oatmeal most mornings.

And, if you can get it in bulk, it's even cheaper.

You have to exercise to be healthy.  The lack of exercise is
part of the plateau.  You also have to change those snacks
to fruit.  What you're eating has too much fat in it.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned your carb problem.  I'm a bit short
on time and don't have time to give you the whole lecture on why
Slimfast is crap (could someone please chime in here about glycemic
indexes) but....

Aim to get 25% - 35% of your calories from protein, and about 20-30% of
your calories from healthy fats (seed, nut and fish oils) and make the
remaining calories come from HIGH FIBER carbs or carbs with
phytonutrients.  For example, instead of a slimfast bar have an apple
and dip it in a little tub of peanutbutter.  Just changing the ratios of
your diet will get you out of your stall.  Try logging all your food at
www.fitday.com and see how the ratios come out.

Also, you're at 13 stone ans that's around 180 calories if I recall and
that means you should NOT be only eating 1100 calories.  Aim to get no
less than 8 calories per pound, in other words, 1500 calories or so.

You're making a lot of rookie mistakes - the same ones I made when I was
first dieting.  I managed to diet myself to over 200 pounds with your
methods.  It'd be nice if you could kick the high carb/low fat/too low
calorie cycle before you get too much fatter.

I'm kind of curious about something, though: you live alone, right?
What's keeping you from exercising?  Does someone grab you by the ankles
and fling you onto the couch?  I work 60 hours a week, have three kids
and a husband and manage to attend church and workout five times a week.
Living alone with no obligations but work would make it SIMPLE!

I work out every day 5 days a week, but cannot just add exercise on
week days because routine is broken by kids husband and other family.

I think what is difficult is building a routine which includes
exercise.
Then you know that at that time you should be exercising, and you go.

But starting the routine, this is not easy.
