David - 04 Mar 2004 00:43 GMT Hi all,
I have been having some difficulty quitting a bad pop addiction, and would appreciate some encouragement/motivation. I am finding this equally if not more difficult then quitting smoking five years ago.
Thanks, David
Angie - 04 Mar 2004 01:44 GMT i used to drink coke like it was water. I gave it up about 5 or 6 yrs ago. have had 1 can since and it made me feel ill and hyper so i don't drink it anymore. now i am trying to cut back and then cut out diet pop. limit how much u can have in a day . i am doing two for one day and then one for then next and then none. to see if that will help me. today i had 2 tomrrow i will only have one f any if i can help it. i used to drink other caffiene but i gave it up and i work at tim hortons where i get my coffee for free. now my problem is other stuff ( like donuts and such. i haven't had any of those in a monthe and 3 days , i'm trying to work on cutting out other things like high fat muffins and all the bad stuff that is sold at Tim's) so like i said about the pop take it one day at a time and slowly wing yourself off of it , or cut urself off cold turkey. when i first went of regular pop i just said enough is enough and stopped drinking it. hope this helps you. angie

Nicotine lowers the effects of caffiene so you actually have a higher tolerance as a smoker. i figured i would tough it out instead of having to quit the pop when i was even more addicted!!
good luck.

I work in a fast food restaurant, and am allowed to drink all the pop I want all day, and trust me in an 11.5 hour day that is a lot of pop.
I found I had to slowly wean myself off of it. I went from drinking coke, to drinking half coke half diet coke, to just diet coke. Even that at imagine drinking 10-12 medium glasses of pop a day sometimes more. I sympathise. When I decided I needed to change the way I look at food, I started drinking water.
The trick with me was, I had to cut out pop cold turkey. Drinking water after drinking pop, made the water taste funny, and I had to brush my teeth before I could have a glass of water. I found after about a week of conciously avoiding pop, it started to feel natural to go to the tap for a glass of water.
Now I don't feel as thirsty all the time, I drink less water than I did pop, and I find I feel better, fewer headaches, fewer shakes, less anxiety and hyperness, and I now rarely drink pop at all.

jayjay - 04 Mar 2004 03:42 GMT > Hi all, > [quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > Thanks, > David what kind and how much do you drink?
I used to be a 4 or 5 coke a day person. Over the course of about a year I finally switched over to diet coke and now actually prefer diet soda to regular soda mainly because of the sugar and sodium content.
I also have gotten down to 1 or 2 diet cokes a day. But I don't drink coffee. My diet coke is my caffeine boost.
Perple Gyrl - 04 Mar 2004 03:05 GMT Have you tried Diet RC? No aspartame (splenda only) and has caffeine...

Its the other Diet Royal Cola that does have the caffeine and I can't find anyone around here that will carry it. They only carry the caffeine free version.
Believe me, I'd like to use it and use splenda. BUT... can't since nobody carries it.

David - 04 Mar 2004 09:25 GMT There was an article about diet RC in the paper awhile back, emphasizing it's use of splenda. It's been sold out in all the stores ever since. Hopefully the cola companies will see a need for it and develop a new line of products for diabetics.

I drink around 8 - 12 of diet pepsi per day. I used to drink regular, but switched a couple of years ago, and lost about 35 lbs.
JayJay - 04 Mar 2004 12:12 GMT > I drink around 8 - 12 of diet pepsi per day. I used to drink regular, but > switched a couple of years ago, and lost about 35 lbs. Well, you've made step 1 so far. Now its time to go for step 2. Look how well step one got you. :)
Set a goal of 5 soda's a day. (think of the financial savings there alone). Do things like; don't drink soda after 5pm. Drink ice tea or water instead.
Check into things like the Arizona Diet Green tea, Crystal lite, Diet Ocean Spray (watered down to dilute the consistency so your calorie count doesn't go too high).
Get to the point where you can substitute your drinks for just plain water. Get down to 5 soda's a day and drinking other low cal/cal free drinks. Then you can go to the next step of cutting down to 1 or 2.
MAS - 04 Mar 2004 13:36 GMT I was a diet coke addict. I drank 6-12 cans a day. I didn't drink much else. I started to drink Kali tea. I bag will make a liter. I would make it up in the evening and chill it over night, add some stevia. It was the strangest thing, I didn't even try to get off diet coke. This tea with out me even noticing, got me completely off diet coke. I've tried to drink diet coke after I was off it, and it now nauseates me. I'm still in shock that I'm not drinking diet coke. I have to admit, I feel so much better. I sleep better and just plain feel better. Now, it's the smoking I have to kick.

I love pop too. I could drink gallons of fizzy drinks. One of the first things I did when deciding to lose weight, was to promise myself to never ever drink non-diet pop again - can't afford the calories.
Now I am working on my diet coke addiction, making a big effort to drink less of it and to retrain my palate to water (tap or sparkling) instead. I find that if I have a lot of it in the house, I will drink it all. A 2 litre bottle or 6 cans would only last me a day or 2. Now I don't keep it in the house, and try to only buy it occassionally. Some days go better than others on this!
I think you have to work out what you are craving, when you crave fizzy drinks? Is it the sugar rush? Is it the caffeine? Is it just the taste? Maybe when you work out what you really miss, it will help you to get through it.
Good work on stopping smoking! (I quit just over a year ago) C x

Drop50 - 04 Mar 2004 14:42 GMT > Hi all, > [quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > Thanks, > David are you quitting the sugar or the caffiene? i assumed both. i don't drink any caffiene or sugar drinks at all now. when i quit i drank alot of non-cola flavored diet caffiene free drinks so i wouldn't associate it with what i was missing. I drank Dr Brown's Diet Black Cherry soda wich is YUMMY and the Diet Rite brand has a few good flavors, Diet Cherry 7up, lots of water, Herbal tea only - even decaf has a bit of caffiene.
i've been off the stuff for 4 years, maybe 5. i haven't had a sip of caffiene since - not even Iced Tea (that's the only thing i miss) but i DO make Iced Herbal Tea and it's good - but i used to like the powdered kind from the supermarket.
now if i taste regular cola it's too syrupy and sweet for me. and I think Caffiene Free Diet Pepsi is great but i need to cut that down. I can drink a 12 pack a day almost!!!

I didn't used to be a pop-addict, but after spending some time last summer with jayjay, I have developed a weakness for diet coke... So, it's all her fault! My favorite is diet cherry coke, but I like regular diet also. Fortunately, I also love Crystal Lite, and most often drink the lemonade flavor. We always have a pitcher of that in the fridge, and even my non-dieter friends drink it and don't realize it's sugar free. I limit my caffein intake to before noon usually, and after noon I start drinking whiskey... Just kidding! I am also a big milk drinker, and drink at least a quart of nonfat milk every day. So, I'm guessing I drink about a quart of milk, 2 sodas, 2 cups of coffee, and about 12-24oz of Crystal Lite every day. That's almost a gallon of fluids! I guess I didn't realize that. So, perhaps you could vary what you drink, and set some specific limits on your soda intake, gradually weaning yourself off of that and on to other healthier drinks...

Gordieee - 06 Mar 2004 20:18 GMT Aw okay, sure dood...
Cola's full of all sorts of shite, seriously. I done a study of this for my phd chemistry - it seriously messes up your metabolism. It's very hard to analyse coca cola's ingredients, as they dont' tell even medical counsells about the 'secret ingredients'.
Dodgy stuff, diet coke's a far superior substitute, but those sweeteners might prove problematic in later life for many people; something that was in the press a few years ago, but they hype has been dumbed down recently, as research continues.
