Hi

I have a small problem with my diet.  As some people may have read I have
decided to adopt a quite low calorie diet.  The only thing is that after a
week of solitude looking after the boys ( I'm a house husband and my wife is
frequently in England on buisness ), I like to indulge in the odd bevvy (
alchaholic beverage) on a Saturday ( and only on a Saturday) night.  This
runs to about 700 calories.

My calories for the week still average out at 1230 calories per day.  The
only thing I worry about is if binging on a Saturday night will affect my
weekly weight loss in the long term.

I lost 7 pounds this week and hope to loose 4 by next saturday morning.

Thanks for the help and support.

Regards

Jim.

Calories from alcohol are just calories, so basically they affect
weight loss only by increasing your calorie intake.  You calorie
intake is still low (rather too low, I think) so you will still lose
weight.  However, from a nutritional standpoint (as I'm sure you know
:-) ), there are better ways to spend those calories.  But if you want
to spend them on beer, I wouldn't stop you.  Just be sure to get some
good nutrition from the rest of your diet.

I've lost lots of weight while drinking wine on frequent occasions.  I
can't say I've ever drunk 700 calories worth at once, though.  That
would be about 1 1/2 bottles of wine, and I'd be on the floor first
:-).

Well, alcohol has about 7 calories per gram, according to Self magazine.

So... I'm going to play the devil's advocate and see how one could
accumulate 700 calories in alcohol alone on a Saturday night.

According to About.com, a 12 oz beer has 146 calories, a five oz, glass
of wine has 100, and a 2.5 oz. shot of rum or vodka has about 120.

So, if one wanted, one could have two beers and three shots and have
about 652 calories.

For safe drinking, add some peanuts or something to snack on, and you'll
easily get to 700 calories in an evening.

I'm not a heavy drinker, but two beers and three shots wouldn't knock me
back on the floor.

Well, yes, this fits with what I said above.  A 5 oz. glass of wine
has 100 calories, so 700 calories is 35 oz.  A bottle is about 24 oz.,
so this is about one and a half bottles.  This is more than I can
drink at once.  Some people can drink more, certainly.  I probably
could have handled it better when I was heavier, but I really don't
choose to drink that much at once anyway.

I'd be asleep on the floor, covered with a blanket, and snoring loudly.  :)
About 2 glasses of wine for me is about all I can do.  I'm usually the
driver, not the drinker.

Agreed.  Most lunches I have a pint of  Guiness plus crispbreads with
olive oil for a total of 400 calories.  Moderate drinking can be
healthy. For men, that would be 2 drinks daily.  Beyond that is
unhealthy and has too many calories. (BTW supposedly dark beers like
Guinness have more healthy anti-oxidants.).

I finally found wine that I seem to like, Bourdeaux at Sam's club.

My memory is that this isn't exactly true.  I googled for these cites
(which I haven't read) but the gist of it is that different processes
are engaged when you drink so that excess alcohol calories are (at least
in part) burned by stuff that wouldn't have happened if you weren't
drinking.  Repairing liver damage, as I recall.

Here are the cites I found:

Lands WEM, Zakhari S. 1991. The case of the missing calories. American
Journal of Clinical Nutrition 54: 47-48.

Leiber CS. 1991. Perspectives: Do alcohol calories count? American
Journal of
Clinical Nutrition 54:976-983.

Prentice AM. 1995. Alcohol and obesity. Internation Journal of Obesity
19(suppl 5):S44-S50.

Suter PM. Schutz Y, Jequier E. 1992. The effect of ethanol on fat
storage in
healthy subjects. New England J Med 326:983-987.

Well...if we get to the point of cirrhosis which entails permanent scarring
caused by the death of liver cells, we will be beyond much repairing ;-)

Think of the liver as the major detox unit.  What the liver has is 17 kinds
of molecules (alcohol dehydrogenase) that gets very busy ripping the ethanol
molecules apart.  Working full out, these guys can disable a half oz. of
ethanol in about an hours time.  This accounts for the one drink an hour
rule to remain relatively sober.  Of course, there are alot more variables
that can also have an effect.  How much alcohol is in the drink.  How fast
you drink, sipping over an hours time or all in a shot, makes a dif as does
taking drugs, age, sex,  and even race to some extent.

So, in a way, your liver is using up extra energy (calories) destroying the
ethanol that you otherwise wouldn't be busy doing.  I'm not sure it's a
valid excuse to have at another bottle of beer, tho.

Hhmm...I have some Jameson Irish in the bar for you, and perhaps I'll have
the Chivas Regal myself :)  Both are dark, rich drinks with lots of
cogeners.  Vodka has the least amount of cogeners, which might help explain
why people who drink it to some excess claim they can be hangover free the
next morning if they over imbibe.  Cogeners are "the other stuff" in the
alcohol that give it a particular flavor, color, and odor.  For myself,
certain red wines will give me a headache after a glass or two, while the
whites never do so.  IIRC, there's something like 500 kinds of cogeners in
wine alone.

Don't remember the study, but I remember some correlation between increase
in HDL with exercise and having a drink or two.  (Not at the same time)
Correlation isn't the same as causation, of course.
