dannon carb count yogurt

JayJay - 10 Mar 2004 01:23 GMT I purchased some of the dannon carb count yogurt tonight. So far - not real impressed.
First off the servings are only 1/2 cup instead of 1 cup of regular yogurt. Nutritional breakdown is 1/2 cup = 60 cals 3g carbs (sugar) 5g protein
Now, compare that to a plain fat free: 1 cup = 120 cals 12g carbs (sugar) 12g protein
But as for taste - the carb count is missing somethign. Missing alot of something..... It was dull.
I think for as little as I actually eat yogurt and the fact that I don't watch my carbs super closely, I'll stick to plain yogurt sweetened with splenda.
Now, if they came out with a larger container of the plain carb counting yogurt, I might try that in place of the regular stuff, to cut down on the sugar.

I just like the texture of it - a little thicker than the fat free and it has good mouth feel to me. Even though it's a smaller serving, I end up feeling satisfied with it. I still use the plain stuff w/ splenda.

Elise Converse - 10 Mar 2004 13:44 GMT You know, I never though of that. Do you put any flavoring into the yogurt besides Splenda? Not only would buying a plain huge tub save money, I prefer the flavor of Splenda. The favorite flavor in my house is, sigh, plain vanilla (what boring kids). Can you put off the shelf vanilla into the yogurt?

I buy the Dannon Low Fat, Plain yogurt and add either fresh or canned fruit, a tablespoon of flax meal, and a packet of sweetener (Equal). I'll sometimes make "yogurt cheese," letting the yogurt drain through a coffee filter for a couple of hours to make it a thicker consistancy--it's pretty good, and a little closer to sour cream this way.
Don't forget that yogurt is great with vegies as well--mix with cukes and tomatoes for a great summer salad.
Today I have yogurt with mangos. Yumm.

A little caramel extract and it's a dip for apples. Chocolate syrup (don't knock it until you try it) - I use sugar free. I tried cocoa powder, but it didn't mix well.

I think the Walden Farms sugar-free chocolate syrup is quite good. And -- another "don't knock it until you try it" -- I like it mixed with f/f cottage cheese.

I also really like the frozen mixed berries with this. (The strawberry didn't work too well though.)
I have the ziplock 1-cup size containers and I portion the yogurt out and add the berries the night before I plan to take it to work. I put the flaxseed and cinnamon in a separate container and mix them in when I am ready to eat it.

I get the Greek style, called Total. It comes with a little honey, which I use sparingly. It's wonderful. It's rich and creamy and yummy.

Some of them really suck, and some are decent. I just tried the Atkins brand bagels tonight - I bought the onion, and also cinnamon raisin. 200 calories, 20g of protein, 11g of fiber. I ate half of the onion toasted with a little lowfat whipped cream cheese, and it was great. My daughter had half of the cinn/raisin w/berry cream cheese, and I tried a bite of that too. It was really good. Some of the low carb bread I've tried doesn't have much flavor, and seems dry, while others you can't even tell the difference. I've tried that Dannon lowcarb yogurt, and it seemed weird to me. Not delicious, but edible. I think I'll stick to the sugar free/fat free yogurt for now. Also, Carb Countdown milk is very tasty, but I wouldn't probably drink it alone - I like it cooked in my oatmeal though.

I eat them with ff orange marmalade.

> I think I'll stick to the sugar free/fat free yogurt for now. I want to try that, with some Splenda, but the Dannon low carb has Splenda and as you said, it's kinda weird tasting. Sort of a chemical taste -- at least to me. At first I had assumed it was the Splenda, but I remember having it on fresh strawberries and liking it, so the taste must be from something else...

I added a packet of splenda to the vanilla this morning and had that. It was more palitable to me that way.
One thing I can compare it to. Recently we were on our trip to New Zealand and Australia. While there, we picked up some yogurt, as DH loves the stuff. The texture and taste of their yogurt was very similar to the low carb versions being sold now.
We noticed alot of the foods were not nearly as sweet as what we are used to in the states. Even products sold under the same brand names and labels have much less sugar in them.
Personally, I think it would be nice to have the less sugar products available here.

That's because the so-called "yogurt" is mostly water, thickened with cornstarch and gelatin, a bit of skim milk ingredients for "milk" color, then artificial colors up to the wazoo, and I couldn't even find actual fruit in the list of ingredients. Oh, and they do actually throw in a bit of bacterial culture so they can call it yogurt instead of pudding :)
Read the ingredients, you'd be hard pressed to find any. I am not making this up. CM
beavis - 10 Mar 2004 19:02 GMT > I purchased some of the dannon carb count yogurt tonight. So far - not > real impressed. I tried the Dannon stuff as well as the Hood/Atkins stuff, and wasn't real impressed either. The Hood stuff was downright awful, I thought-- it had the texture of wall spackle and a strange flavor. I ended up throwing most of the 12-pack out. The Dannon was better (I ended up eating what I bought), but I doubt I'll get it again. It also had that weird texture.
I'm sticking with the regular Dannon Light & Fit yogurt when I want yogurt. The flavor and texture is *much* better, and at 11g of carbs for the 4-oz size (vs 3 in the LC stuff), it's not going to throw me off track eaten in moderation.
Some of the low-carb stuff has been terrific (the Vita's Tortillas come to mind... what a killer Chicken Caesar wrap!), but both the yogurt products have been a disappointment, at least for my taste buds.

I haven't tried it yet - but Entemans (how ever you spell that) the company that makes the boxed cakes, brownies, donuts, is now peddling low carb stuff. Its right as you walk in the door to my local grocery, they are really pushing it hard.

Yeah, that's what happened with the Dannon Fit and Trim beverage thing. It tasted like chalk to me -- or rather it tasted to me the way that wet chalk smells. (No, I don't often eat chalk.)
