Hello ...
I would like try using a protein shake as a meal substitute, et
cetera.
I've tried one or two in the past, and have found them not to taste
very good.
Does anyone use a protein powder for shakes that you would recommend
as tasting good enought (perhaps when mixed with milk) that it would
be both healthful and a nice "I'm drinking a taste-good shake"
experience?
Many thanks for any suggestions.

I use the GNC store brand soy protein - strawberry only. I mix it with
yogurt and fruit (frozen blueberries, cantaloupe, a banana, etc.) It goes
down easy and is pretty cheap - 12 bucks or so and it lasts me a couple of
weeks - less than a buck a meal.

I have plain whey protein with no additives and it does taste very
good to my taste. Kind of like a powdered milk taste. I rarely eat it
these days for some reason, but it seems to be a decent product.

I like whey protein powder over soy...does taste much better. I like
vanilla protein powder mixed with a cup of water....fewer calories, less
trouble than dragging out the blender. I agree with you...it mostly
tastes like powdered milk. I would definitely use whey though...unless you
are allergic to milk, etc. Elise

I totally agree. My favorite whey protein so far has been some Trader
Joe's Chocolate Whey that MH didn't like and so sent me. (Thanks,
Martha!) I'm out and wishing I could make it the 20 miles to the Trader
Joe's that opened up, but my butt is chained to this desk for the
foreseeable future.

Sure! It's not that I didn't like it, it made me deathly ill. I mean, "I
think I'm gonna die, rush me to the hospital" ill. It was as bad as the
worst food poisoning I've ever had. So, I guess I'm allergic to whey.
It tasted good before I got sick, though. So, if I wasn't allergic, I'd be
using it.

I agree, I also like whey much better.
Elise, have you tried the gym's new Lean Source ready-to-drink meal
replacement shakes (in the cafe refrigerator)? Tom introduced me to
them the other day. The chocolate one is really tasty -- like rich
chocolate milk. Profile: 220 calories, 3g fat, 27g carbs, 20g
protein. I've ordered a batch from the autoship program :-).

On this new plan from Karen, my carbs are limited to 60 per day( not
counting the ones in two fruits and 2 milks), so 27 is a huge hunk. I'd
rather eat my carbs in something I can chew! I do have 4 of them in the
fridge just waiting to be consumed! Maybe I can get Stuart to try one.
Elise.

I'd forgotten that you were limiting carbs right now. Maybe for later
:-). And tell Stuart he'll like it :-).

My DH loves "eggnog" flavor of the Spiru-tein brand of protein powder. It's
probably not available now in mid-March unless you find a health food store
that has some left-over from the Xmas season. I like the "cookies & cream"
favor of the same brand. Both of them have 14 g of protein and ~15 g of
carbs. I think that these are a bit on the expensive side (~$20.00 for a
canister that's 15 servings). I also bought some of the lemonade favor of
Sci Fit Econo Whey Protein. It makes a smoothie with water that's kind of
thin but has only 114 calories, 22 g of protein and 4 g of carbs. It tastes
pretty good. I haven't tried mixing it with milk since I only drink soy
milk. I think it's pretty reasonable priced. I paid $16.95 for a 2 lb
container which is supposed to be 32 servings. I've tried a few sample
sizes of protein powders that I would not ever, ever try again (some even
got poured out after the first sip) but I don't remember the brand names of
those. It's not like DH and I would drink just anything no matter how bad
it tasted. Also, I don't have any connection with these brands except as a
consumer.

Of course, everyone's tastes are different, but I like the
taste of Spring Valley brand Chocolate flavored soy protein
powder. I've only had it once, so far, but it's a quick
protein source and it goes well with 1% milk...

Don't get Naturade 100% Whey from Whole Foods. It is totally nasty tasting
and I hope I can return it! Aside from that, I look forward to what
everyone else likes!

I use Carb Solutions Creamy Vanilla and like it. I mix it with my oatmeal,
mix it with ice, frozen fruit and water in the blender for smoothies. I
seldom make a plain shake with it but it doesn't taste bad when mixed with
water and ice. I just prefer it mixed with other foods.
