How many of you here use a supp for fiber intake such as a pill/powder
or drink? I have been considering buying some Metamucil or something
like that to assist. I don't feel that I am getting as much fiber as I
need. How much is recommended anyhow on a low cal/low carb WOE? (under
2000 per day)

Lately I've been snacking on Wasa Rye Crisps to handle an oral fixation
associated with late night accounting work. It's very little calories,
keeps my mouth moving and is pretty much all fiber. :-)
I also take a plant stanol supplement that appears to be mostly fiber,
too. Years ago I used to take a FiberCon tablet with a glass of water
before meals, but that was intended as an appetite suppressant.

I love crispbreads, too - currently I like Ryvita brand sesame rye
crisps - I dused to eat Wasa brand fiber rye. I generally eat 50 -70
grams of fiber daily, but no supplements. Besides the 9 sesame rye
crispbreads (13g) I get fiber from: 1/2 pound mixed veggies (15 grams)
1 pound blueberries (12 grams) 1 cup tomato sauce 4g, 1/2 cup oatmeal
4g, 1 whole onion, 1 tablespoon cinamon, 20 grams of garlic, 7
tablespoons of peanut or almond butter 7g. calories - about 2400. The
"magic number" of fiber grams to reduce appetite is 30, and it doesn't
matter if it's from supplements or real food. Apparently 30 g of
fiber can reduce appetite by 20% in obese subjects. Warning, don't
ramp up fiber intake too rapidly.

I try for about 20 grams at least every day. I eat various types of high
fiber cereal every morning, they usually have at least 10 grams of fiber.
The other 10+ grams are easy enough to get from fruits, vegetables, beans,
and high fiber bread. Metamucil is kind of expensive and you have to take a
lot of it, it's easier to eat higher fiber foods.

Last time I checked, SF Metamucil was made with aspartame.
BTW, I get 30-50 grams of fiber a day from fruits, veggies, legumes and
grains.

Probably. I'm not one of those people who worries about aspartame,
though.
Chris (who is developing a serious Diet Pepsi habit :-) )

Just curious, how much fruits and vegetables do you eat, in pounds?
The reason for my question is that I eat a very large quantity of
vegetables (and a bit of fruits such as apples) per day, upwards of 3
lbs. I tracked all that I ate in fitday for one week. Averaged over a
week, my fiber intake was only 30 grams of fiber.
So, when I hear you say that you get 30-50 grams of fiber, I can
assume that you eat 3-5 lbs of vegetables and fruits per day. You
mentioned that you eat whole wheat products, but given that you eat a
relatively low calorie diet (as you said) and you eat a large
proportion of your calories as protein (as you said), that wheat is
not likely to account for much.
If you also eat a heroic quantity of vegetables, like me, I can only
congratulate you, as I believe it to be very beneficial for health.

I take something called Fybogel, which is quite pleasant and gentle to
take in water, and is based on ispaghula husk and contains no sugar.
Without a supplement I'd only "go" every 5 days or so, which isn't
comfortable. And this despite the fact I eat way over the 5 portions
of fresh fruit & veg daily, plus all bran, wholemeal bread, etc.
Some lucky people can live on around 1500 calories and not need extra
fibre, but I'm not one of them.

I don't know how much is recommended, but I often use Metamucil
powder, as I don't eat enough fruit and veggies all the time. They
make a sugar-free version, by the way. An added advantage of taking
it: I usually take it at bedtime, and if I'm feeling a tad bit hungry
at the time it gives me a feeling of fullness.

Sometimes I add wheat bran to soup. Otherwise, I eat a lot of vegs and
fruits and oat bran cereal.

I have been hearing for about 5 years now that clinical studies
show the fiber in your food is more effective than supplements.
The recommendation is 30 grams a day. If your eating program is
interfering with that, it's not a good program. I also found this.
"But be leery of using fiber supplements for weight loss. In August
1991, FDA banned methylcellulose, along with 110 other ingredients, in
over-the-counter diet aids because there was no evidence these
ingredients were safe and effective. The agency also recalled one
product that contained guar gum after receiving reports of gastric or
esophageal obstructions. The manufacturer had claimed the product
promoted a feeling of fullness when it expanded in
the stomach."
