Could anyone recommend pedometer that they are happy with?  I am
thinking that I may need a new gadget :-)  (hey, some people like socks,
others of us like gadgets!)
Julianne - 15 Oct 2003 13:16 GMT
I'll ask my Mom - she has one that she is emotionally attached to.  My
understanding is that those which can be 'trained' to recognize your
individual steps are superior to those that measure based on averages.  Oh,
and while gadgets are good, socks make your feet happy:)

I love my pedometer - it's called Fit-Pro, but I don't know if they're
available where you are.
It might be worth googling for this as there have been quite a few
discussions on pedometers on this group in the past.

I just got a Sportline Fitness Pedometer 360 that is pretty much the
Cadillac Escalade of pedometers.  It tracks two different stride settings
(run & walk plus a run/walk mode), gives you miles (or km), steps, calories
burned, has a timer that counts only the time you're moving, avg miles
traveled in an hour, steps per minute and the date.  It keeps track of your
distance for the last 7 days and has an odometer and a very secure clip.  I
tested it out this weekend and it was pretty dead on in measuring my
distance walked, but I kept forgetting to switch to run mode to test the
running or if I did switch, I forgot to check afterward so I'll check that
Saturday morning when I run again.

It's pricey for a pedometer, I think it was $30, but if you like gadgets it
rocks.

Let me get this straight.  I have just started to run so I walk and
run in the same session.  It will let you switch from running to
walking and back in the same exercise session?

Yes, you can hit the buttons and make the switch in the same exercise
session. You'd have to pause for a moment to do so.  Depending on your ratio
of walking to running, there's a run/walk mode that probably calculates an
average stride based on your running and walking strides.  I haven't played
with it.

I feel great.  I have been on it for 19 weeks now and am a little less
than halfway to my goal.  Somedays are easier than others but I have
survived.

That is great.... How do you do HMR?  How many calories are you on?  I eat 5
meals a day (soup, shake or bar) and up to 2 cups of veggies a day... It
comes to 600 to 800 calories.

I am on 500 a day.  Five shakes or soups, no bars.  I even lost
another 4 pounds this week.

The dietician started me on that... but I couldn't take it.  After 2 weeks
on the program, I was still starving constantly.  She allowed me to add the
veggies and I felt alot better.  I've been losing about 4-5 lbs a week.  She
tells me that she doesn't want to reduce the calories, as what I am doing
now is working great for me.  I am a tall big-boned woman (yes, I did the
bone tests to know for sure).  I lost about 49 lbs in 10 weeks....

Congrats on the 4 lbs!!!!

Wow, that is great for 10 weeks.  How do you test for big bones.  I am
sure I have them, but did not know there was a test.  I have lost 76
in 18 weeks.  The bars are so good, so they don't let us count them as
a meal replacement if we are on the full fast.  I used them before and
they became dangerous for me so I just do without.  I have a lot of
recipes I have gotten from all over the internet from different sites
and people, that I use.  Some of them add things to the shakes, I made
frosted brownies the other day, not real, but not bad after no food
for 18 weeks.  I can't wait to hit the hundereds.  I think I was in
high school when I weighed 199.  Good luck on reaching that first
goal.

Hi Heidi,

There are several websites out there that you can use to test... Such
as how think your wrist is and the measurements on your elbows.  I
can't locate the sites, but I remember someone posting them here
recently.

Why don't they let you count the bars as a meal replacement??  I am
allowed to have 1 a day as one of my meals.  They are extremely
convenient to keep one in my purse for when I can't make a shake up
and I'll be out all day.  It also gives me more energy before a work
out.  What my dietician tells me is that if it works for me, and if I
am stil losing at a high rate, keep doing what I am doing.  I have not
had a stall yet, which I am very thankful for.  I have been losing the
weight at a 2-1 ratio (for every 3 lbs, 2 lbs of fat & 1 lb of muscle)
per the Tanita scale.  I need to work out more to increase that to 3-1
or 4-1.  Right now, I am going to Curves 4-5x a week and occassionally
taking walks.

I am 34 now and have not seen the other side of 200 since I was 17.
Good luck to you as well!  BTW, I don't have alot of recipes.... could
you please email them to me?  I would greatly appreciate it!  Thanks
:)

People in the traditional fasting HMR program with the classes, etc. are not
allowed to count the bars as a meal replacement because they aren't a meal
replacement due to their lack of nutrition.  They're sugar and palm oil and
are used to keep someone "in the box" when they really feel so deprived that
they're ready to bolt.  Even in Healthy Solutions (which is shakes, entrees,
and veggies/fruits) the bars are not encouraged.  Only shakes and entrees
are actual "meal replacements."  People in the fasting program are also not
allowed to have veggies/fruits, but now can have entrees in place of two
shakes.  The entrees weren't allowed at all on the fast when I first
started.

It's great that they work for you.  There are plenty of people in my fasting
class that took advantage of the bars when they were allowed after week 10.
I even had one last week because I wanted to see if it would be different
from the other time I had one.  It wasn't.

Keep up the great work!

In our program people were abusing them and eating them in place of
the five shakes so they finally decided that it was better not to call
them a replacement but and addition to the five shakes a day.  No one
on the fast is allowed to buy just bars.  I used them once before and
they can be very addictive so I just stayed away from them.  As for
the recipes I am in the process of putting together a word document
with some recipes for different things in it.  I will email it to you
as soon as I finish it.  Hopefully this weekend.  I haven't been on
the other side of 200 since I was 16, so 15 more pounds and I am
there.

Hey Heidi and Jenn...

Thanks so much for the explanation.  As I've said in earlier posts, I don't
attend classes.  They are not offered.  I am on this program thru the
Diabetes Education center in Dallas.  I don't have diabetes, but I do have
PCOS, which can lead to diabetes.  Therefore, I am not familiar with topics
discussed in the classes.  I don't have an addiction problem with a daily
bar and I keep losing weight with no stalling.  If I do start to slow down
the weight loss, then I will cut them out for a while until I get past the
stall.

In addition, I can eat up to 2 cups of raw low carb veggies a day.  My
dietician calls this a modified fast.  The veggies that I eat include:
tomatos, carrots, broc, cauliflower, celery, zuchini, squash, peppers,
artichokes, lettuce, cabbage, pickles, salsa (for soup tortillas), low
sodium v-8, 6 oz = 35 calories, onions (with lettuce and tomato on small
salad), etc.  I can also have beef or chicken broth to mix with the soup.
Swanson's reduced sodium soup is the best I've discovered.  It has 30
calories for the entire can and has protein as well.

There are days that I don't eat any veggies, or less then 2 cups of veggies.
I could not do this program otherwise.  It is what keeps me honest and
going.  The natural fiber also helps clean out my system.  Due to my height,
exercise schedule and larger body frame, I need the extra food.  As an added
bonus, it is nice to be able to go out with hubby 1-2x a month and order a
small plate of plain steamed veggies or dinner salad with no dressing and
mix up a shake.

Heidi, I look forward to the recipes!  Basically, the only thing do except
mix up HMR70 into pudding is create the soup "torlillas".

Best wishes, gals and thanks for your support!!

I WANT ONE!!!!

I had the Sportline 342 in the past and thought it became unreliable as far
as measuring my distance walked.  I re-measured my stride in case that had
changed but it just seemed to have gone wacky.

You *need* a Palm so that you can get a simple logging program to track your
walking easily and conveniently.  You need one to keep your appointments and
your addresses and have them handy when you travel.  You need one to keep
your shopping list handy. You need one to play games during boring meetings,
family functions, and drives.  You need it
because you could buy a GPS plug-in and never get lost in the woods again.
I dunno, just a few suggestions to help coax you.  The Zire is only $99 but
it also doesn't have a lot of memory to it.  Stay away from Handsprings.
Trust me on that one.  Mine just died and it was a warranty replacement for
one that croaked a few months ago which was purchased to replace my first
one which did fine and was only replaced because I wanted a newer and faster
one.  My brother is still using my first one but like every other piece of
electronic crap out there, the products get worse over time rather than
better.

My handspring was very conservative on the batteries and my new Palm is
rechargeable.  No more battery issues.

I actually use my Palm for work...the suggestions I was giving Laurie were
some of the personal uses (except for GPS) I have for mine.

See there?  I'm making a list.  GPS fascinates me.  It took forever for me
to get a microwave because all anybody ever made in theirs was instant
coffee.  Oh - and the person who told me they "could have NEVER fed their
baby without one" (that went over big <g>)

I walked for almost a year before I allowed myself to consider a treadmill.
I wasn't going to have an eight hundred dollar clothes rack.  As soon as the
time changes, I'll be on it every evening after supper, sweating happily.

We got our first Alberta Clipper today or at least the edge of one.  It's
supposed to be rain & snow through the weekend now.  I wear my pedometer all
day long, except when I play volleyball since I spend a lot of time on the
floor.  We lost all 3 games tonight, but I got under a few more balls than I
did last time.

Have fun with your new gadget...wear it on the treadmill!
