Today is Week Nine, and I've been at this weight of 245-ish for thirteen
days now.  I've been mostly eating as I should with the exception of a
three-day pleasure trip where I had to eat in restaurants.  I can understand
not losing during that period but I need to jump-start my weight loss again.

So, for today I'll take a fast.  Wish me luck!

Good luck, take it easy on exercise and drink plenty of water.

Next time, in the evening before the fast, eata  dinner that is normal
in calories, but has relatively more fat. It helps me with not staying
too hungry.

Let us know how it went...

I'm having a similar problem.  I weighed 191 on March 5th and haven't budged
since.  In fact, I think I'm retaining 2 extra pounds of water (I hope it's
water) since I'm back up to 193 and haven't strayed too much off plan.  In
my perpetual search for inspiration, I found this article and I've started
trying to follow his "prescription".

http://www.dolfzine.com/page306.htm

Yesterday, I did my 30 minutes on the ski machine first thing before
breakfast and today's is regular gym day so I'll do my cardio after my
weighs (like I had already been doing.)

Someone asked whether you can get a "good" workout on the ski machine as far
as getting the heart rate up and working up a sweat.  I didn't have time to
reply then and now I can't find that post.  It's a very good workout IMHO.
I don't have a heart rate monitor but I could tell that I was really getting
up there.  I came off the machine soaking wet and the calories per hour site
showed that I burned 303 calories in 30 minutes.
(http://www.caloriesperhour.com/index_burn.html)  The ski machine is powered
by pushing foot sleds with your feet and the poles on mine are independent
of the foot action not like with an elliptical where you can just hold on
and get your arms "worked".  I have to actually push and pull on them to get
them to move.  The gym I go to doesn't have any ski machines just
treadmills, ellipticals, steppers, stair escalator machines and almost every
kind of weight machine imaginable, so having a ski machine at home is good
cross-training for me.  I also bought a mini-trampoline rebounder and
haven't been using it as much as I had planned to but it's a lot of fun to
jog and bounce on and it also gets the heart rate up.

That pretty much describes the program I've been on for the past 18
months exactly.  You know, the one where I've lost 50 pounds of pure fat.

I often do my high intensity interval training on my NordicTrack before
breakfast.  I like to exercise and take a shower just once before my day
gets started.

I recall that at first I didn't have good enough blood sugar to do this
- I had to have a half-glass of orange juice first.  But my insulin
resistance issues went away quite quickly (maybe three months?) with
regular vigorous exercise and a balanced low-glycemic diet.

I find that it's too difficult to stay at a fast pace, but it's a great
machine for doing intervals of hard/easy on.  I can just drop the arms
if I need to ease up a little.

Nope, I'm Dally.  A really, really tired one.  We've got a blizzard here
and a client cancelled so I walked to the gym and got in a good workout.
I've been skipping a lot of workouts lately due to my 18 hour work
days (9 am to 3 am most days last week) but when I *do* get a chance to
workout I do a cardio warm-up (usually running a mile) and then do a
full-body free weight workout.

By the way, I like Dolfzine a lot!

So do I.  I hope that it's not on a permanent hiatus because the last time a
new "issue" was put up was in December.  I was doing almost everything else
in his "prescription" before just from the knowledge I had gleaned from
Krista's site and reading here.  The only change I've made is trying the
first thing in the morning workouts.  I've been trying to minimize the
impact carbs have on my blood sugar levels by following the rule that I
never eat something that is predominantly carbs without also having
something that is predominantly protein.  It seems to be helping.  I didn't
run out of gas during the morning workout and didn't even feel like eating
for about an hour and a half after the workout.

Ron the editor and Rosemary the Asst. Editor both died last fall/winter.
That puts a bit of a crimp in their pet project.  (All of this is
tragic, I don't mean to make light of it - Ron committed suicide in
December.)

It definitely helps.  It turns out that combining a protein and a carb
is a really really great trick for me, too.  I go one step further and
try to make the carb contain something worth eating, either fiber or
phytonutrients.  Favorite snacks include apple slices dipped in
peanutbutter, rye crisps and cheese, and cottage cheese with a bit of
yogurt mixed in.

I got stalled around 190 for a while, too.  I had to go back to basics -
are you still drinking enough water?  (Take a drink now when you read
this.) [Wendy pauses to drink up her cup of tea]  Are you ready to
reduce your calorie level?  I had to when I got to around 190 - my
calorie level was great for losing weight when I was above 200 but it
needed to be ratcheted down to reflect the requirements.

You're doing everything right, so get your water, get your sleep, get
your fiber and may the whoosh fairy visit you soon!

That's awful about the guy's suicide.  I remember reading something on there
about the assistant editor dying but had no idea about him.

I'm drinking enough water to float the Titanic it seems like.   I did have
to go to the kitchen and get a glass of water to sip on.  Thanks for
reminding me.  Right now I've got almost all our water bottles in the
freezer to make ice for our cooler because we're going on a little road trip
to Santa Fe and I'm too cheap to buy a bag of ice.  I kill two birds with
one stone also by doing this.  We will have water that's decent to drink and
our healthy snacks will stay cold.  (You never know in the Southwest how the
tap water will taste.)

So if you wonder where am I for the next few days, I am doing the tourist
thing.

One joke nickname for the Body for Life program is "Potty for Life".
Speaking of which, time to go get another glass of water!

Have fun!  I enjoy being an unrestrained eater on vacation now knowing
that it is for the event, not for the rest of my life.  :-)

Hello Dewolla,

Keep on chugging along and don't give up on eating right.  What are you
doing for exercise?  How many times are you exercising a week?

Take care,

Paul

Paul, I'm not doing much for exercise except normal housework.  My
arthritis, sciatica, and heel spurs pretty much keep me from doing much.  I
was using a recumbant exercise bike for awhile but my knees hurt so much
that I couldn't get around.  Because of the blood thinners I take I can't
take Advil or Motrin for the pain, so I'm stuck.

Dewolla,
What does your doc say about all your pains and dealing with them?

Drug-wise I can take Tylenol and Vicodin, but since they can cause problems
with the liver I try to not take them unless I'm really in pain.  For
non-drug treatment I try to keep my back in a neutral position as much as
possible so I don't aggravate my sciatica, and for the heel spurs I tape my
feet and wear custom orthotics.  I buy athletic tape by the case!  There's
not much besides the Tylenol I can do for my arthritis and some days I have
knee pain all day.  I love gardening but I've noticed lately that sometimes
when I squat or kneel down my knees don't have the strength to lift me to a
standing position and I need to grab hold of something to get back up.
Climbing up and down the stairs to do the housework gets to be a real
challenge, too, by the end of the day!

Yes I did!  I was going to fast all day yesterday but succumbed to a Lean
Cuisine entree for dinner.  I think I may consider having one fast day per
week, it might do me good in several areas of my life.

I know I couldn't do it and I won't try to do it.  It was hard enough doing
the HMR shake diet for 3-4 months.  I couldn't see doing less then that.
This diet is a medically supervised liquid fast... it is what started me on
the road to better health but it is a road I don't follow anymore.

Wow, you do have a challenge.

My doc has me on an anti-inflammatory drug called Mobic (I think).
(bit it does say to discuss w/ your doctor if you have liver disease).

I also know a friend w/ sciatica who went thru physical therapy and as
long as she does the exercises and stretches recommended by her doc,
she does well.   When she stops and sits around all day, her sciatica
acts up real bad and she's miserable.

I hope you figure something out, as you sound like you are miserable.
I know when I'm gardening now, I use a knee pad to rest on or a stool
to sit on, in order to get off my knees.

More frustrated, really.  I've always been the contemplative type so I do
enjoy sitting quietly and pondering, but I am frustrated with my
limitations.  The main reason I want to lose the weight (and swiftly) is the
hope that at least some of my difficulties will ease if there is less of me
putting weight on my back, knees and feet.  Can't hurt, might help!

Oh yes, I went to knee pads a while ago.  What a relief!

Not sure what type of woe you are following, but have you considered
working with your doc and/or nutritionist to devise a medically
supervised VLCD?   Then once you lose the weight, if your joints are
feelign up to it to work on a physical therapy and muscle gaining
program?

I find that even kneeling on kneepads for too long, I'd rather sit.
:-)   I end up sitting on my side if I don't have my little bench with
me to sit and I don't want to squat or kneel.

Maybe a garden kneeler would help.

http://www.lifewithease.com/kneeler.html

I don't have problems getting back up but my left knee gives me fits if I
put it on the hard ground.  I use one of the foam pieces to add cushioning
for it when I work in the garden or flower beds.
