I am so happy... I just got back from shopping for new clothes again. I
seriously only had 2 short sleeve shirts that fit and no shorts that fit
before my shopping spree. Since it was 81 today, I decided not to hold out
from summer shopping anymore.
This is the first time I've been shopping in over a month, since I last
posted about shopping for clothes. I am officially no longer shopping for
clothes in Women's/Plus Departments. I found several items at Kohls that
fit great and I didn't have to shop in the full figure section to find them.
The main thing that really annoys me is that they make shirts so freaking
short. Most of the XL shirts fit me but are too short on my long torso! I
like to have my shirts come to my hips so they cover my tummy. They had
some really cute shirts that I would have liked to have bought, but didn't
because they were too short on me. Any suggestions for brands or stores
that are geared toward taller women trying to hide their bellies?
I also bought 3 new pairs of size 16 shorts that fit good. I got the Lees
with side elastic. Unfortunately, my belly is slightly disproportionately
larger the rest of me due to the extra skin, etc. If it wasn't for this
hanging belly, I would be fitting into size 14 shorts and shirts may no
longer be too short on me! The 16 shorts were baggy on my thighs and fit my
butt... but only fit my waist because of the elastic. I hope my belly
starts getting smaller and flatter. I hate it.
Anyway, that is all for now... I just wanted to share my experience. BTW,
Kohls is running their buy $50 and get a $10 gift card special until
Saturday. Needless to say, I am getting new sneakers for free next week!!
:)

Thanks very much... you haven't lost any sizes?

Yes, I have lost several sizes, but am still in plus sizes...although on top
(where, naturally with my luck, I've lost most of my weight) I can fit into
some regular sizes, but if they need to close around the hips...no way. I
have lost recently another size in pants which was nice. My weight is coming
off sooooo slowly these days. I'd get discouraged, but frankly our little
circle of weightlifting team/coaches/friends is such a great support group
it hasn't really occurred to me to eat to salve my frustration. Both Chris
and I both recently invested in fancy, shmancy heart rate monitors. I know
Tom wants me to wear one a fair amount of time to try to determine what the
deal is with my metabolism to try to figure out why I am not losing faster.
I know they must think I am cheating on this eating plan of mine, but I
swear I am not!!! I will tell one funny little thing that happened to me
the other day...I was bending over shaving my legs and noticed a large lump
on the one side of my leg. I freaked out and stood up...no lump. Put my
leg back up on the side of the tub...lump. Finally, not being very bright,
after about 4 tries of this I figured out it was a muscle flexing. It's
been so long since I could see them I didn't recognize it! Have a good
weekend...enjoy your new clothes. Elise.

I can relate. I was concerned when I became aware of a large hard
lump between and just below my breasts. Then I realized it was the
end of my breastbone :-).
BTW, Elise, I was noticing this afternoon how much thinner you were
looking :-).

That is funny! I am glad you discovered it to be muscle!
I am enjoying them so far. Thanks so much!

Isn't that a great feeling? When I started being able to shop in the
non-plus sections, I half expected a salesperson to chase me back into the
"women's" department. Anyway, congrats! :)

Exactly, I didn't feel like I belonged either until I started trying some of
the clothes on. That is when I realized that I do belong.
Thanks!!

The popular styles these days are so frustrating. They are meant for
stick thing women.
I can't tell you how many shirts I find that have these itty bitty
sleaves, are short so they will show the midrift - and you can't tuck
them in or cover the top of your pants.

We all need custom tailors. That way our clothes fit us - instead of
made to fit manicans.

Congratulations on the new sizes, PG!
Regarding longer shirts: Are you looking for button-front types of
shirts or knit pullover types of shirts? Either way, here are a
couple of suggestions:
For fairly conservative styles, try Lands' End, Eddie Bauer, or L. L.
Bean. They are cut longer than many of the department store lines.
Go to a mall department store that's maybe up one notch from Kohl's --
not sure what they have in your area, but an example where we are
would be Hecht's. In the Misses section they should have some lines
that cater to more conservatives or older tastes -- for example,
Alfred Dunner. They will also have longer-cut shirts.
I also have quite a long torso. If I want to tuck in a shirt I need
to look for longer ones or there isn't enough fabric to stay tucked
in. Lately, though, for untucked styles I'm liking shorter tops
because longer ones seem to make my legs look even shorter than they
are. (I'm not into the belly-baring sort, just high-hip length.)

Both types, I like variety.

Eddie Bauer is also cut a bit wider as well. I've shopped in their store
and found that their shirts there were kinda shorter then I like. I've
checked online and I can order tall lengths there. However, I really prefer
to not buy shirts online that I haven't tried on first. I just know that I
never want to shop in full figured stores again and will have to make time
to go out and find out what will work for me.

I think you once told me to try Foleys or JC Penneys or some other sort of
mall department store. I haven't braved there yet, because I don't have
hours to spend searching thru each of them for clothes that will work for
me. I mainly just want to know where to go. I am working so much and am so
busy, I barely had time to make it to Kohls this week by 9 to shop for an
hour before they closed. We don't have a Hecht's, but I will check around
for Alfred Dunner brand.

I haven't tucked a shirt in for 20 yrs, I wonder what it is like!
Thanks for your help!

Lane Bryant sells regular size clothes for taller people.
Perple Gyrl - 21 Mar 2004 10:46 GMT
I've been to them and have never seen regular size clothes. Do you have to
get them from online?

Way to go Perple,
I like Kohl's too. I don't seem to have the shirt length problem you
having. I have notice a little more skin in the belly area, but it seems to
be dissipating with the more cardio workouts I'm doing. I've actually have
been considering a liposuction procedure and tummy tuck, but am not sure
that I really need it yet. I think I'll wait another 6 months to a year and
see what my stomach looks like. It seems like I can feel my abdominals
getting closer to the surface each day, which is a great feeling.
Sorry but I can't help on the clothing brands or stores your seeking.

That is pretty great! My stomach won't go away with exercise... I am
pretty sure I'll be doing they tummy tuck, thigh lift and boob lift one day.
I am saving for it now.
