What's your thoughts on eating bread? I eat lots of bread as I have
sandwiches every day for dinner. You see all these things in the press about
'Atkins' saying Carbs are bad, and then other people say avoid bread as its
full of some type of carb or whatever. In terms of calories, my daily intake
is 1600 (male 24 210lb).

Hi
I can't speak for everyone but I have found bread to be particularly bad for
me. For some reason it seems to make me put on weight more than anything
else (except for eating a box of snickers ha ha). I dunno why it just does.
Regards
Jim

My thought is that it depends on the person and how they metabolize
carbs. It could be just fine for some people. I also always eat 1-2
sandwiches for breakfast. If you can stop at a little bread and your
blood glucose is fine etc, if it does not make you hungry a few hours
afterwards, why not eat a little bread. Eating a lot of white bread
though, is a bad idea because bread contains relatively few nutrients
like vitamins etc, and it displaces other foods.
What matters, for normal (non-diabetic people) is calories eaten for
the whole day.

At the moment around 500 calories out of my daily intake are coming from
bread. Today I've had 1500 calories from bread (it's my day off today). I'm
not fussed about the nutrients, etc, at the moment, I'm just wondering - is
say 1000 calories from bread just as good as 1000 calories from say tuna, in
relation to weight loss.
Just with all the who-har about Atkins, etc, I'm wondering if people say
avoid bread.

I think that it depends on the bread. I look for whole grains and I
check to make sure that the fiber is high and the calories are low. I
also avoid the "Texas toast" sized slices.

The problem is that most people either eat white bread or they
eat fake whole wheat which is made mostly from white flour and
colored with caramel. Look at the package. If the first
ingredient is unbleached flour, then by weight the bread is made
mostly of white flour, just not bleached pure white. Buy
something else.
You should also be substituting whole wheat pasta for white
pasta. I've been doing it and I rather like it.
You should also be eating brown rice instead of white rice.

No kidding. I just looked at the ingredient list for my favorite
bread, Oroweat Oatnut Original, and there it is: unbleached wheat
flour. I just love this bread and I thought I was eating healthy.
Damn. I also notice that it has the dreaded "high frustose corn
syrup".
OK. So what do I look for on the ingredient list to ensure I am
getting the wholest whole grain bread.
Is there a list of "recommended" breads somewhere?
Thanks for ruining my day (just kidding).

I've been pleased with the Brownberry brand for whole grain breads. I like
their whole wheat and my grocery has recently started stocking the Carb
Counting whole wheat by this company.

Basically, the first word on the ingredient list should be "whole", as
in "whole wheat flour". My favorite is Pepperidge Farm Natural Whole
Grain Whole Wheat Bread, but I haven't done a wide comparison.

Some people will answer you differently, I know, but I don't think
there's anything terribly wrong with bread. Your calorie intake is
certainly low enough to allow you to lose weight. The only thing
about the bread is that getting too many of your calories from bread
means you may not be getting enough of other things you need, like
protein, fruit, and vegetables. I'd also recommend eating whole grain
breads rather than the white flour sort; it's far more nutritious.
Lots of people apparently find that carbs cause cravings for more
carbs, but I think that's an individual thing; it hasn't been my
experience.

For me it really really depends on the carbs. I think that it's a matter
of knowing your body as well as keeping with your calorie budget/range.

yup! What Chris said!

I feel bread is healthy (in moderation, of course). To make it more healthy,
I eat 7-grain variety. I will post a review in time.

For some people bread is ok, not for me. It's pretty empty calorie,
even whole grain stuff isn't the best choice for things to eat.
However, if you do want to eat bread, be sure to read the ingredients
list (not the silly 'nutritional info' thing). Many breads try to give
a healthy appearance by making it darker with molasses when it's really
just a white flour junk thing with a few whole grains sprinkled on it to
make it look wholesome.
The more whole grain the better, I say.

I eat 2 slices of wholemeal bread nearly every day in my lunchtime
sandwich, and sometimes I also eat bread at breakfast. I count it as
part of my daily calorie intake and it never seems to make any
difference to my weight loss. It depends what type of programme
you're following.
