I mentioned in another thread that I was going on a cruise and several
people asked for details, so I thought I'd start a new thread.
First off, I'm going on the 4 day Royal Caribbean cruise out of Miami on
April 19th. It's my third cruise, last year we went on the 5 night one
from Tampa on Carnival to Cozemal and the year before we did the three
night one to the Bahamas from Port Canaveral on Royal Caribbean. My
in-laws live in Florida and fly us down to see them each spring and then
kick my husband and I out so they can have some alone time with our
three children (ages 13, 11 and 4 right now.) We manage the indignity
of that by going on a cruise! We love cruising - it's a great
combination of getting away, going somewhere and just hanging out by the
pool. It's also economical: we meant to go spend a week-end in a hotel
this time but the cruise was actually cheaper!
But, to get back on topic, there was a world of difference between where
I was at in my head on the first two cruises. On the first cruise I was
weighing in at my absolute peak, over 240. I waddled, my feet got sore
on long walks, and I mostly just bellied up to the trough. I recall
asking for second entress so I could try everything at dinner (and of
course cleaning my plate.) I don't recall going dancing or even seeing
the inside of the workout facilities on that first ship. All my clothes
had elastic waistbands.
A year later I went on my second cruise and I noticed that the entrees
offered were actually portion-controlled pretty well - so a single
entree WAS a meal. I tended to eat more carbs than usual, but really
not a ton more - like Jayjay mentioned having an english muffin along
with her normal breakfast. I'd have a slice of pizza for my
mid-afternoon snack, but I would have had a snack then anyway. And I
didn't pig out at any point - just ate frequent small meals.
I also really participated in the exercise options. They had resistance
machines sort of like the ones at Curves, and the treadmills faced the
water and it was quite lovely running on them, especially as we were
leaving port. I went up running on the track on the top deck, too, and
really enjoyed the breeze alternately pushing and pulling me. It was
like running up and down hills.
I've lost another 30 pounds since my last cruise and I'm looking forward
to wearing shorts occasionally instead of just fat-lady capris. My
husband says my running shorts look nice on me, by which he means they
cover up the most troubling part of my thighs adequately. :-)
I would tell people who are planning a cruise to plan to eat small meals
because they come frequently, but that turns out to be a good thing for
blood sugar maintenance and feeling sated without over-stuffed
afterwards. It's hard to find whole grains (I eat 100% whole wheat
bagels at home, for example, and couldn't get that there) but it's okay
to eat a bit of refined rice once in a while.
Plan on getting in workouts, though, it's suprisingly fun to join a
class or figure out how to use the strange equipment. Don't plan on
learning anything from the exercise staff - they seemed even more rank
amateurs than the staff at my home gym. In fact, they were mostly sales
people hoping you'd buy some fat-dissolving lotion or something.
So I'm sitting here dreaming about cruising. I've been buying clothes
on ebay at 2 in the morning when I get done with work. It's not a bad
thing to have floating around in the background of my brain.

Did you hook up with cruise connection to get transport to/from Miami?
They pick up right at the McD. at the highway and its very convienent.
Either RC, your travel agent or even yourself can call in the
reservation. Door to door service basically. Sure beats the drive
to Miami.
I don't have time to read the whole post - I certainly hope you aren't
griping about the food options - you know what to do and how to do it
and you know all the exercise options. Weight maitnenance for a 4
day cruise should be easy. :-)
You may experience the 3lb water gain, from the extra carbs, you you
know that a quick couple of days at low carb (my "meat and salad"
diet) will get rid of that. :-)
Do me a favor - send me an email - you still have my addy - right?

I did one cruise years ago. The food thing is tough. I've done
quite a few "all-inclusinve" vacations in the past, same problem.
The last time I went I lucked out in finding an OA group that ate
dinner together! It was amazing how that changed what I ate. No
shame or anything, but we'd always discuss what we were eating,
even when we cheated! (A little cheating is allowed on vacation).
I did the midnight buffet once because it was lasagna, but I
regretted it (rough seas, rough night).
Anyway, enjoy it!

If you want to have some fun in the exercise room, go in and do some
deadlifts or squats :-).
My last cruise was on Holland America, which gets a pretty old crowd
overall, so most the people in the workout room with me were 65+.
There were actually a barbell and some plates in the room -- not sure
why, as there was no rack of any sort. But that didn't rule out
deadlifts, of course. I figure I was just lifting around 150 lbs. or
so, as that was all the plates they had (unsure of the weight of the
bar), but it was enough to completely freak out the people around me
:-).
And then I did some squats, though very light because of the issue of
getting the bar in place without a rack. (Had I known how to do OL
then, I could have gotten up a lot more :-) .)

NNNOOOOOO
Ok - Only do them as you are leavign the ports.
Actually - they only have dumbells - no bar weights at all - just because of
the danger.
Let me tell you - on our cruise there were a few days we had 12' or greater
seas and one day after doing a 3 set of leg presses on the machine, I got up
to jello legs and just about went thru the window when the boat jarred from
a wave. And as a matter of fact - it was probably something like that,
that set off my current knee problems. (I can't say there was one
particular moment out there - but it did happen while on the trip, doing the
exercises as well as all the walking in *new* rebook running shoes)

Well, I did them while the ship was in port. I wouldn't recommend it
while moving, either.

Well, as I said, one ship I was on (Holland America's Volendam) had a
barbell and plates. The other (Holland America's Ryndam) had only
dumbbells. I was on the Ryndam first, so was surprised to find the
barbell on the Volendam.

I found bench pressing 35 lb. DBs rather challenging when the ship was
moving around. One does have to be careful. It's best to avoid
lifting heavy free weights when the ship is moving. It sounds like
one needs to be careful of other things as well.

They had a few dumbbells and some swiss balls in the exercise room at on
Carnival Sensation. I recall being dazzled by the brilliant chrome of
the dumbbells and dismayed because I had just had a manicure and my
hands were sort of greasy and the grip wasn't very good on the smooth
grips. I just laughed at myself for trying to combine a manicure with
free weights. :-)
But I did swiss ball squats with dumbbells and got a lot of weird looks.

It sounds like a lot of fun.... I wish I could go on a cruise too!!! Are
you going to bring your bathing suit too?

Oh, it sounds lovely! And much more relaxing and rewarding, now
that you've gotten into such great shape. It's a good thing I don't
drink coffee though; I'd have spewed it all over my monitor over the
"troubling part of my thighs" bit... ;-)
