Hi Everyone!

I was asked to tell my story so here goes.  I am almost 58 years old and
haven't had a weight issue for most of my life due to having crohns disease.  I
have been in remission for the past 3 years and the excess 30lbs has slowly
crept up.  I am only 5'1" so I can "feel" every pound of it!!!!!  Four years
ago, I was "painfully" thin when the crohns was flaring....I do not miss the 20
to 30 bowel movements a day, believe me!  But this excess weight is very
frustrating to me.  I also used to teach country line dancing 3 days a week and
danced for my own pleasure 4 to 5 days a week. Now I am down to dancing one day
a week.  The popularity of country dancing has waned in my area unfortunately.
I go swing dancing every Friday night now and love it!

I have been following the high protein, low-carb diet (South Beach) and have
been having some success with it.  I also use the treadmill for 30 minutes
about 4 days a week.  Going through menopause and having an underactive thyroid
gland, I think my metabolism has slowed down.  Losing weight is a very slow
process for me...  I enjoy reading the groups suggestions and admire how
helpful and encouraging you all are to newcomers like me...:-)

Just wanted to say thank you all again and keep those suggestions coming!

Love, MaryAnn C

Welcome to the group, MaryAnn.  I look forward to seeing you post more
often.

I'm in the same age group (61) so I'm familiar with the effect ageing has
on our ability to lose weight.  We just have to try a little harder to get
there but it's certainly possible.

Hello MaryAnn,

My mom has a hard time getting the weight to come off too.  She has lost
like 25 pounds or so and wants to lose about 25 more.  She has done real
well I think for being 74 years old and spends an hour a day on a treadmill.
She has osteoporosis and complains about her back hurting her all the time.
I hope you find the right balance you need to lose the weight you want, yet
leaving the crohns behind.  Congrats on the remission.  I hope things go
your way from now on.

Hi Paul!

I am impressed with your mother being on the treadmill for an hour a day!!
That is wonderful! The most I have done on the treadmill at one time was 45
minutes.

I, too, have osteoporosis due to crohns disease and am on medication to prevent
any visible signs of it.

I am very impressed with your progress and want to say "Way to Go Paul"...:-)

Welcome, MaryAnn!  A dear friend of mine has Crohn's -- an evil
disease.  I'm glad you're in remission.

If the weight is coming off, it sounds like you're doing the right
thing.  Don't worry about it being slow; it's better for you that way.
You'll lose less muscle and your skin will look better.  I am
menopausal and also hypothyroid, and have lost 105 lbs.  This has
taken about 20 months -- so not especially fast, but I have no
complaints.

Hi Chris!

Congratulations on your weight loss!  You have given me hope that it will come
off.  I know that one flare of my crohns will melt it off me quickly but I am
hoping to stay in remission and lose it safely and sensibly.  You are right
about crohns being an evil disease.  I wouldn't wish it on anyone! It's also
nice to know that another menopausal, hypothyroid person is successful at
losing weight! :-)  It gives me hope!...Thanks for sharing...MaryAnn C

Thank you for sharing your story and welcome to the group!!  I am glad to
hear that the Crohns is in remission.  I have a friend with it and I know
how difficult it can be to deal with.  Are you eventually looking at adding
weight or resistance training as one of your activities?

Hi!

I work out with light weights and resistance bands a few times a week.  Tonight
is my swing dance night and I can't wait!  I love to dance.  What kind of
exercises do you do?

Hi MaryAnn,

My father dances and when I told him about FitDay he bought the PC
version and was very impressed with the amount of exercise he gets from
dancing.  He's 76 y/o and he and his buddies play 3 sets of tennis three
times a week, he rides his bicycle around the small college town he
lives in and is currently enrolled in a senior's weight training class
at the university.  He began taking ballroom dancing lessons several
years ago after the grief of losing my mother passed. It has been a
great social outlet for him and a previously unknown method of exercise.
I'm looking for a community class that I might be able to take during
the next quarter since it seems to be a fun way to exercise.

Hi Julie!

Dancing is great exercise and fun!!  You don't even realize how much exercise
you are getting!  It is a great social activity.  I am a licensed country line
dance instructor and I taught at the local Senior Citizen Center and they loved
it!  I used to modify the moves so that even the seniors could do the "Tush
Push" and the "Achy Breaky"   :-)  They all told me they looked forward to
Tuesday afternoons for their dance class!  I am very impressed at how active
your father is!  You must be very proud of him!    MaryAnn C

I work out 4-5x a week... I usually do about 30-60 mins of cardio on the
elliptical or treadmill.  I also do weight training, switching out days for
upper and lower body.  I am a bad dancer and have no rhythm!!
