Do you think the DMV would let me get a new license if I asked?  My
picture looks so little like me that I am getting questions whenever I
use it as an ID.  And it doesn't expire until 2008!

I suppose I could just pretend I lost it...

I don't see why they wouldn't re-issue one if you say you lost it.

Our company keeps the pictures on file and re-issues our badges with the old
pictures.  Some of the people have changed so much in the past few years
it's hard to recognize them.  Mine was taken when I was near my all time
high weight (1996)  and had blonde hair.  Now that I'm 30 some pounds
lighter and have light brown hair it's hard to tell it's me.  Some day maybe
they'll decide to take current pics.

In our state, they re-issue the original drivers license, they keep
the photo in the computer.

I know in my state I can just go in and ask for a new one.  I haven't done
so because it's an inconvenient PITA to deal with the DOT.  It also may have
gotten me out of a ticket as the cop had to be convinced that it was really
my license and he was so impressed I think it might be why he let me go :)

If you want to deal with DMV Hell, you could say you lost it. I just got my
new license and I don't want to go through that for a long, long, long
time....having my nail pulled out would be more pleasurable.

It depends on where the DMV is.  In my town, it can take 2-3 hours.  In a
neighboring town, it can take 30 mins.  Also, there is a mobile  DMV mobile
home that travels around town to local businesses.  I had mine renewed that
way last year.  It was wild.

Dealing with the DMV around here is fairly painless.  I only encounter
problems when I wait until the last couple days of the month to renew
license plates or drivers license.  I've even gone a few days into the next
month and hoped the SHP doesn't notice I don't have a new sticker on the
auto<g>

Who scrapes the old one off<g>   I just paste the new one over the old one.
It's usually too cold in January (my renewal month) to spend the time
outdoors scrapping anything.

People in Texas do for sure because ours adhere by the front side to the
inside of the windshield and you can't keep the old one up and put the new
one above it, for example.  The inspection sticker is the same way.  It used
to be with the university parking sticker here that you could keep the old
ones and stick the new one above them.   It was kind of a status thing that
someone would have a whole line of them along the side of the windshield.
But then the ptb decided that the keystone kampus kops (kkk) were too stupid
to figure out which one was current so they made it illegal to have more
than one on your vehicle.

Our license tag renewal sticker goes directly on the license plate on the
vehicle and not on the windshield.  No inspection stickers are needed.  If
you live in a county that requires e-check( environmental check  ) it's on
your vehicle registration paperwork.

The registration sticker used to be put on the license plate here too but
they changed it in '94 because too many people had figured out how to steal
someone's sticker off the license plate and restick it to their own.  I
never had it happen to me but knew people who got ripped off.

Perple Gyrl - 26 Mar 2004 04:39 GMT
They were easy to steal, as you just had to pull them off.  I feel old
remembering back to when I used to have to keep the sticker on the license
plate back then... *sigh*.

It's odd that *I* could never pull off the old one(s) when I went to put the
new one on.  I just stuck it on over the old one but that's probably why it
didn't come off - it wasn't stuck directly to the metal.  This discussion is
so far off topic now it's ridiculous.  These strolls down memory lane are
fun though.

I have to scrape it off!  We put the registration on our windshield, right
above the inspection sticker in Texas!  We stopped putting them on the
outside of our car on the license plate years ago!

Here in the Great state of California where "Red" Davis bled us dry, it's
horrible. First, you want to get an appointment. To get one, you either have
to call in or try online. And if you live in the county of San Francisco,
fuggitaboutit. Nothing will be available, so you get an appointment in
another country in the Bay Area. After trying to get online for a few days
without success, I tried on the phone. After being on hold a few times for
over 20 minutes, I got an appointment.

Then, I waited in the appointment line and then I waited for my number to be
called.

It's so screwed up. I do feel sorry for the employees there; every single
person needing something at the DMV is in a pissy mood.

Thanks Gray Davis for screwing our state like no one before you, you lying
crook.

Had I known the vast difference in DMV Torture between NJ and Maine, I
would have moved here for that reason alone.

I needed a license renewal the same month I reached my goal and got to
choose between 2 dreadful pictures of some skinny woman ;-)

Some things never change.

At least you got to choose.  They waited until my eyes closed to take mine
and wouldn't let me re-take it.  I think they do that on purpose cause they
hate their jobs.

I bet they would issue you a replacement if you tell them you lost it.  I
don't know the policy of your DMV.  They may or may not require that you
take a new picture.  I would call them and ask.

I am waiting to get mine redone in May.  It doesn't expire until 2008
either... but I am getting PRK in May.  I want that restriction off, a new
picture, my new address from moving last year and my new last name.  4 birds
with 1 stone!

I'm amazed...I got my new license and it's a great photo! Who knew??? : )

Chris - having spent 3 hours in the DMV replacing a lost license, I would
suggest that you go to the DMV web site and see if there is any place you
can pose this question to them.  It is so time consuming to replace a lost
one, they just might reissue one with a new picture for a lot less time
invested since you could present a current one.  Um....I've seen your
picture and it truly does not look at all like you!!

I'm wondering something very similar..but in my case, it's my passport, not my
driver's license that needs replacing. And it doesn't expire until 2011.

There's an old joke about passports... if you look like your passport
picture then you're too sick to travel.

But I've got the same problem.  I had my passport picture taken at my
peak weight.  I'm travelling in three weeks.  I'll let you know if I
have trouble!

It's probably too late for this trip (yours or mine; I'm traveling in a week),
but I emailed Passport Services. They wrote back that you should renew your
passport if the photo longer recognizable as you. I still have 6 years to go on
my passport, but sometime after this trip and before the next one (which will
be not this summer, but the following), I'll try it. I hate that I'll have to
pay $55 to "renew" a perfectly valid passport, but the alternative of being
stuck with that picture, taken at my top weight, until 2011 seems far worse.

is a fee.
