Hi Everyone!

I thought I would share a funny and stupid thing that I did a few weeks ago!
My husband (age 56) bought a jump rope for us to work out with.  I also figured
the weight bearing exercise would be good to strengthen my bones.  Thinking I
was a kid again (almost 58) I started to jump rope (trying to impress my
younger husband that I could still do it :-)  Well, I jumped for about 80 times
taking a break after every ten jumps or so...The next day, I could barely
walk!!!!! Ouch...my knees!!! Guess I am not as young as I used to be!...:-(
(needless to say the jump rope is gathering dust in the basement)

Hello MaryAnn,

Well at least you gave it a try, right?  Find something that's less
stressing on the knees and joints.

Well, it's pretty good just being able to do it.  I've lately started
doing a boxing lesson once a week, and the boxing trainer (Brandon)
always has me do some rope jumping.  I'm lucky if I can jump 10 times
in a row before getting out of sync!  I think my max jumps in a row is
around 40, but the limiting factor is coordination more than
endurance.

Jumping is probably something you want to work up to :-).  It is
indeed hard on the knees.

It sounds like you did too much too soon. Try moderation. The jump
rope is still a good thing. Just do 5-10 the first few days then
gradually increase it. Your joints will probably adjust. Also use good
shoes and maybe use a pad or mat.

Give the jump rope another chance but start slowly and build up.

It wasn't the age - it was the "too much, too soon".  I had a similar
experience years ago when I decided to try a new jump rope one of my kids
received for their birthday.  I spent the afternoon jumping rope with them
and spent the next few days hobbling around with calf muscles killing me<g>
I was in my late 20's at the time.

Hi!

My husband bought the jump rope at a local Musclemag dealer.  They sell all
sorts of gym equipment there.  I am not sure if it is a national chain or just
a local one but any place where they sell fitness equipment should have
one!....My advice...Go slow!....Your knees will thank you!...:-)  MaryAnn C

In every kids' shop, here.
You are no more overweight, but if running is dangerous for overweight
people, think about rope jumping, when all you have to do is to jump
on your knees and on other joints.
