L-Carnitine??

Has anyone tried it to help with losing weight?  I was listening to a radio
health show and the doctor on it recommended supplementing with l-carnitine
to help increase endurance and burn more fat.  I just bought some yesterday
and tried it today for the first time.  I got the liquid form that you take
with a spoon.  I took 1100 MG in that one doze and all I can say is wow...
It made me very hyper.  I am going to take another dose before I go to the
gym tonight.  It says take 2-4 grams a day for optimal results.

Here are a few links I found from a google search:

tee, hee.... you are hyper - aren't you.   :-)

A couple things to note.

If it makes you hyper - take it earlier in the day so it doesn't keep
you awak at night

if it makes you hyper, take lesser dosages and work your way into it.

and finally,
Many items that make you hyper when you first start taking them, that
side effect will become less noticable over time.   Just remember
that.   It doesn't mean you take more to feel hyper again.   it just
means your body has learned to compensate for it.

Also - monitor your blood pressure and heart rate while using this
stuff.   Just as a precaution.

Yes, always hyper, this stuff makes it more apparent!

I took it at about 11 yesterday and before my workout at 6.  I did work out
pretty hard and had no problem falling asleep.  That doesn't mean that I
won't have a problem in the future.  I also too 2000 mg, not 2200, as I
orignially thought.

> if it makes you hyper, take lesser dosages and work your way into it.

Yeah, I shouldn't have taken the max dose the first time... but too late!

Good Suggestion, thanks.

Last week at my yearly at the gyno, my resting heart rate was 59, and my
blood pressure was 89/60.  It has NEVER been tested that low before and
getting examined with a speculum is NEVER relaxing.  I have my paperwork to
get my blood work done but have been too busy to make it in.

That's great on the BP.   That's about where mine usually is.   It
goes lower at times - to the point that the docs have to take my bp a
few times to verify that what they are getting is correct.   :-)

Let me just say this.

HOLY sh.t BATMAN!!!

And in your recent photos - you don't look 209.   I'm thinking that if
you put us side by side, we'd look the same.   :-)

It was weird, because when I was very overweight... my BP was never high.
It was always in the normal range.  Now, it is so low.. I get dizzy spells
sometimes when I stand up too quickly.

Well, I do have *bat wings* when I lift my arms!

As I've said, I do have a large frame, large bones, muscular.  If you saw a
picture of me standing next to another person for size reference, I wouldn't
look so small.

Anyway, thank you!

Ah - that's a "welcome to my world" situation...  I get those dizzy spells
just about every time I stand up.   :)

Ya know - if you are this funny on usenet, you must be a total trip to be
with in real life.  :-)   If we ever met, we 1. wouldn't shut up and 2,
wouldn't stop laughing.

I used to get dizzy spells this bad when I was younger and thinner... as
well as different times in my life when my weight has been low.  I wonder if
my BP will continue to drop as my weight does.  How much further can it drop
before it is dangerously low?  I have been hitting interval training on the
elliptical 30 mins a day for 4 days in a row after weight training.  It is
really great stuff.  You knee better get well soon or else.

3:  You wouldn't stop smacking me so I would shut up!
4:  One of us would be in prison for attempted murder!
5:  All of the above!

I've taken it for a few years now off and on -- not particularly for
weight loss but as an athletic supplement.  I generally take 500mg
with breakfast and 500mg with lunch; my athletic-formula multivitamins
add another 250mg.  I don't know that I perceive any difference in
weight loss when I'm taking it than when I'm not.  If there's a
difference, it's probably very slight.  You may find that it increases
your energy level and endurance, though.

It can make you a bit hyper, so you might want to ease into it a bit.
I'd recommend not taking too much at bedtime.

Perple Gyrl - 29 Mar 2004 01:11 GMT
Thanks Chris...

It also says that it is good to help with muscle soreness, endurance, etc.
I took another tablespoon (1100 mg) just a minute ago, before reading your
post.  That is 2200 mg today.  The dosage is 1-2 tablespoons a day.  I am
off to the gym to test how hyper it will make me.  If I am still hyper after
my work out, I'll take it out on hubby *evil grin*.  This stuff does make me
feel energetic, and I've only been on it for 1 day.  Tonight is upper body
night.

I think these are better reasons for taking it than as a weight-loss
aid.

That must have been an infomercial.  What burns fat is exercise.
Throw it away.

Exactly how many of those carnitine references did you read, to come
up with this brilliant conclusion?

There are literally thousands of articles on carnitine and the repair
of muscle -- in both disease and healthy states. You really should try
reading some of them before making dumb replies like this one.

I wouldn't jump on you, but you constantly make statements with little
thought, and they are almost always  incorrect.

Hi Perple,

Is this an over the counter item?  Is it helping you with workouts?  What is
the cost approximately?

Thanks,

Paul

It is an over the counter non-essential amino acid that I bought in liquid
form at a vitamin store.  The bottle has 24 one tablespoon servings with
1000 mg (I was wrong about 1100 mg, it is really 1000 mg) of L-Carnitine per
serving.  Yesterday was the only day I've tried it and it get me a ton more
energy.  I took it in the morning with my regular vitamins and about 45 mins
before my workout.  I will give a full report after trying it for a full
week.   Click on the links from my original post for more info.  This is the
type I bought from this vitamin store in Frisco on Saturday:

BTW, I took new pics yesterday and updated them to webshots.  I just checked
and they still aren't showing yet.  They say it takes 30 mins, but it has
been about 10 hours so far!
