I thought I was doing a good job, going from 174 to 158 pounds
currently.  I thought my size 36 pants were even feeling a little
loose.  Well, then my wife purchased some new size 36 underwear (my
old ones were falling apart).  Ooops! Too tight.  Size 38 underwear
are my size.  That's only two inches from the definition of obesity
for men (40 inches) - and a full six inches from my college waistsize.
I have to admit I am discouraged.  Apparently my old size 36
underwear gradually stretched out over time so they weren't tight.
This weight loss business is very hard for me.

I still wear some size 38 UW, even though my pants size is 32. My size
38 feels quite comfortable. Don't get too discouraged.

I would reconsider your diet approach Brad. It is not terrible, as
such, but perhaps not the most efficient.

They're supposed to be tight.  Why do you think they're called "whitey
tighties"?

Like Igor, I'll admit to continuing to wear a larger size than my actual
hip size would require.

Brad...Brad...Brad,

Underwear actually run larger than actual waist sizes.  I've bought like
three different brands and none of them fit the same.  Don't get discouraged
because of underwear.  Just find some that are comfortable for you and wear
them.  I'm surprised your wearing 36" pants at 158 pounds.  I'm 38" right
now but remember wearing 34" and 36" at a weight of around 189 or so.  I
wonder if you have wider hips than me?  I can't believe anyone has wider
hips than me...lol.

By the way you've done awesome going from 174 to 158.  How tall are you
and how old are you?

Again great job,

It would be if their hip sizes weren't about the same as my waist size!  My
hip size is still over 40"!  Most of the weight is on my waist and hips
though.

40" isn't all that big.  Women are supposed to have big hips :-).
When I was in college my measurements were 40-25-40 -- and this seemed
very popular with the guys :-).  Now -- at 157 lbs, but menopausal and
with different fat distribution patterns, I'm like 45-29-38.  (I'm
really not all that busty, but I'm both large boned and muscular.)

Um... just noticed this typo!  My bust measurement is really 42, not
45.  Still big, but not outrageous :-).

I'm 5'4" and small boned so my 190 pounds that makes me over 40 inches in
the hips also makes me look like a wide load.   When I get down to 130 I
hope to be about 34-26-38.  But I'll probably be 32 in the bust.  I do
measurements on the last day of the month and last month I lost a cumulative
8.75" from arms, bust, waist, hips, thighs and calves.  I don't think I'll
be doing that good this month because I've only lost a single pound all
month.  I'll report the cumulative total loss (if any) on Wednesday.

By contrast: Just this morning I did some measurements because I was
trying to figure out if I was wearing the right bra size.  The
measurement just below my bust -- around the rib cage --  is 34", and
I haven't a bit of fat in that area.  So clearly I've got a way bigger
frame than you.

I'm sort of sorry I haven't been tracking measurements all this time.
I just measure occasionally when I'm trying to determine my size when
I'm ordering something by mail.  It would be fun to know how much I've
lost.  Lots, I know -- probably 10" in the waist alone (with the
leftover flabby skin to attest to it :-( ).

Maybe you'll be surprised :-).  Sometimes measurements change when
weight doesn't.

BTW, I bought a pair of size 8 pants today that fit perfectly.  A
fluke, I know, but still gratifying :-).

I'm always interested in other peoples waist-hip ratios.  At my current
weight of 128 (at 5'3"), my bust is 38, waist 28, hips 35...  I like the hip
and bust numbers, but wish the waist would go down.  Don't think it will
though - I have the exact ratios that I did at my heaviest weight.

Ack! You asked the question, so I did the measurements. At *my* current weight
of 110, I measure in at 36-28-36...which is a perfect hour glass, if you don't
demand a bit more SUCKUP around the waist...I can't help thinking that wouldn't
*that* be nice. I can't see it happening anytime ever, so here I am.

Hi, Det! Good to see you, btw.

So have I - what a pity whoever made me didn't know I was never going
to want to use them to have children:)
I'm still quite a bit over 40 round the hips but  34 round the ribcage
below my bra, and I don't think I have the physical fat around that
area to lose much more.

I wear a 38 bra, down from a 46!  DH actually saw *gasp* a rib when I was
lying down last week.  The areas I really need to lose my 30 or so pounds
from are my hips, thighs, butt, tummy.  I don't forsee my bra size getting
lower then a 38, as I am pretty big boned, tall and getting more muscular
every week.

So far I just seem to be down from an EE/F cup to a DD cup.  My
breasts don't seem large to me anymore, and they're very saggy, but
that's what seems to fit and what the measurements seem to indicate.
I'm thinking of going to a bra specialty store sometime to see if I'm
really wearing the right size or the best sort of bra.

I highly recommend a Victoria's Secret fitting.  Regardless of your size,
the style makes a huge difference.

Do they have this at all Victoria's Secret stores? (think Bangor Mall)

I hate every non-sports bra I've tried on so far  :-(

I would imagine they do.  If they don't have a sign advertising it, just ask
a clerk.  I'm pretty difficult to fit but I found a VS style I like and one
at Wal Mart.

Personally - I find Victoria's Secret to be totally awful in how they handle
fittings and sizings.   I've tried a few times at different stores and I
swear the women that work there don't know what they hell they are doing
when it comes to fitting.

Instead I went to a local higher end department store to their lingerie
department and the woman there hooked me up with bras that fit wonderfully
and she spent so much time and attention with me to get me fitted well.

I guess it's a YMMV thing.  The woman who did my fitting took a lot of time
and went through numerous styles to find the one(s) that worked best for me.

What is the largest size they go up to???  I always pictured myself too
overweight to wear anything in there... almost like they would laugh behind

Some styles they have in 40's and you can always get those via the catalog,
but in the stores I've only found 38's.

Even though their decent bras are around $30, it really is worth it.  Once
you get fitted and know the styles you like, then you can shop the catalog
(cheaper) or wait for their semi-annual sales.

Having seen your answer to PG, though, I'm worrying that I might be a
bit on the large side for them.  I've been wearing 40DDs, though I've
been thinking that a 38DD might be worth trying.  I think I'll give it
a shot, anyway -- they can always turn me away :-).

I must say that all this boob talk is very interesting. Mabe you gals
would like this story I heard some time ago...

Henry & Edith are sitting at the breakfast table on the morning of
their 60th wedding anniversary when Edith says to Henry, "Do you
realize that we were sitting at this very table 60 years ago today?"

Henry replies, with a twinkle in his eye, "Of course I do. And do you
remember that we were stark naked."

Edith returns a mischevious grin and says, "Yes, I do."

Henry then says, "Well, what do you think?"

They look at each other for a few moments then they take off all their
clothes and sit back down, whereupon Edith exclaims excitedly, "Oh
my, Henry. My tits are still hot for you."

Henry smiles and says, "I'm not surprised, Edith. One of them is in
your coffee and the other is in your oatmeal."

At least you didn't want to get pregnant.  I've got the hips but never was
able to use them and I wanted a child so very badly.  It took me too long to
find someone I wanted to spend my life with but I got a very good DH so
that's a consolation.

Not to rain on your parade, but there's probably still lots of extra fat
around the internal organs and that's the most important fat to get rid of!
With the panzone (Spanish = pot belly) I've got, I shudder to think what's
in there up against my liver!

I want to get pregnant too, I just haven't had the luck yet!  Luckily, my
Endo told me that my ovaries and uterus look great and I have no cysts.  I
am ovulating regularly and still no luck.  DH is going to be *tested* this
week, if ya know what I mean.  Does your husband have any kids from a
previous relationship?

I 2nd that!  my belly just hangs.  If I am not wearing compression shorts, I
can feel it move too much when I am exercising, and it is disconcerting and
depressing.  It is also the reason why I am not posting my side view with my

Yes, he has a son and a daughter from his first marriage but they live in

Since I'm 45++ I don't think I'm going to get lucky.

Yeah, ain't it grand! That makes two pounds I've lost in March!  I started
back recording the calorie count of everything I eat in a spreadsheet.  I
had felt confident in my ability to "monitor" it without recording
everything but evidently I'm not so good at it yet.

Thanks for the encouragement Paul. I'm 5'8" tall, 55 years old.  My
hips are normal size, I'm not big boned. What upset me was that it was
the same brand I've always used - Fruit of the Loom - and also one
book (Dr. Mirkin's?)claimed that for men, go by your underwear size.
The 36 size hurt to wear. I'm hating being just 2 inches from 40"
waist - obesity.  It just ain't fair! I eat right and exercise nearly
two hours daily.  I ougta have a waist size of 32!

I'm in the same boat. I'm 25% of the way down to my target weight of
~185 yet sure as heck haven't bridged the 2 inches on the waistline (i
peaked at 40, and 32 is bone skinny for me).

I guess it could be true that the first to go on is the last to come
off or something.

> This weight loss business is very hard for me.

Well, assuming you're 5' 4" (= ~30BMI at 174), you've still got a 27.1
BMI, which ~could~ correspond to a 37.1" beltline (IOW each 1 point
drop in BMI from 30 is a 1" drop in beltline from 40").

Getting back to college days for me will require a BMI of 22.7, which
is, in fact 10 less than the 32" beltline I had then.

You'll find that the sizes go down faster as your weight gets lower, I
think.  I didn't go down in size that rapidly from 262 to 200, but now
it seems like 5 lbs. affects the way clothes fit, and 10 lbs. is
pretty much another size down.

There's something to be said for having your clothes stay useful for a
while, actually.  I find I keep putting on things and then tossing
them in the charity pile because they're too baggy.
