Hurray - went to Orthopedic surgeon today after my regular medical doctor
had a fit, a nice fit, but a fit that I was still planning to lift knowing
the results of my MRI on my right knee. Basically, he said while my knee is
a mess and needs arthrosopic surgery, he does not believe I have any
ruptured ligaments and has given me the green light to compete on Friday. I
am literally walking, albeit with a slight limp, on Cloud 9.
He will readjust my patella, which has moved laterally and then I will be
doing rehab just like JayJay, and will clean up my two meniscus.
Eventually, the left knee will have to be done since I have the same patella
thing on that one. There are other tendinitous issues, and that IT band
thing but that is sort of not horrendous stuff.
I am just so happy that I can lift on Friday...will be out of comission for
a while after that, but hey....I'll just do some body building. At least,
Tom didn't laugh when I suggested that, although he did say at my age, it
would be more body sculpting. I have no idea why some people love to remind
me how old I am (my youngest child is the same way). Anyway...now it's off
to the gym to give the good news to Ahmed.

This is great news, Elise. Have fun at the competition. I'm hoping these
sore knees aren't contagious.
My grandkids *used* to kid me about my age but they quit that once I got in
shape and can out last them on the bike trails and skating. Now when they
help me with yard work they're always the ones whining to take a break<g>

Oy vey - I had the same thought while I was happily running again last
evening. I decided to squeeze my exercise ball between my thighs since
JayJay indicated strenthening the inner thighs was a good idea (correct me
if I'm wrong). I need to not get hurt much more than be able to run.

That is what they tell me. At least in my case. It a matter of
strengthening all the thigh muscles equally. That way you don't get one
stronger than the other that cause it to pull the patella off kilter.
So far the exercise I'm doing are:
Start with calve stretch
Then stepups onto a small stool
Then incline Squats using one of those body weight things (pilates or the
thing that Chuck norris promotes)
Then onto the table for what is considered the "around the world".
Start with straight-leg leg extensions
Then outter thigh side leg lifts
Inner thigh side leg lifts
lay on belly with feet hanging off bed and do rear straigh-leg lifts
Other side outer and inner thigh lifts
So you just do a circle around the body to work each area of the thigh
Then there is the ball squeeze
Then the butt lift
Then the butt lift with feet up on a swiss ball
Stretching - using a jump rope
Straight leg stretch
Outer IT band stretch: Both legs out straight - take one leg with the rope
around foot and in hands, left up, then over across the body to feel the
stretch in the outter thigh.
I think that's it at this point in pt. Of course I'm doing this with very
light weights.

That is good news. I hope you do well on Friday,
I've gotta ask, as I'm getting confused. Who is Tom?
On the torn meniscus, are they going to have you do the surgery for
that or is there a possible fix w/ PT?

Tom is the head trainer at our gym. He has been training Chris for several
years in various types of strength training and I have been with him for a
little over one year. I train 2 days a week with Tom - now olympic style,
after the competition he is going to branch out with me trying to give my
knees a break, trying to do something more conducive to weight loss, trying
to expose me to different stuff until I can get back to my first love. The
only requirement I have after the competition is that I want to be sure that
some kind of strength training is a part of things. I have no desire to
lose the strength I've worked so hard to achieve! Ahmed is strictly an
olympic style weight lifting coach and I work with him 2 days a week.

They are going to clean up the meniscus when they do the lateral release on
the patella. PT does follow but my understanding was that it was mostly for
the patella thing. I am a little bit nervous regarding getting around on
crutches...mostly the step thing since there are a zillion steps in my
house, but I understand the recovery time is fairly quick.

Ahh.. I follow now. I've always thought that Ahmed was your trainer, and
I wasn't sure where Tom fit in - for a bit I thought he was a hubby or
something, but it wasn't adding up. :-) It all makes sense now.

Yick, ouch, yuck.. <shudder>
Usually they put you in a full leg brace for a while after a surgery like
that. You learn to walk straight legged like that to get around without
the cruches when you are hobbling around the house. I've never dealt w/
crutches - my sister was the expert on that one. (she sprained or broke
somethign at least once a season). You get to the point where you don't
use the crutches to get up and down the stairs - just use the arm rails to
help guide you.

Hey Elise,
I am glad to hear that your knee isn't as messed up as it could be! I hope
you do well in the competition. Best wishes.

Great news Elise! Best of luck in the meet this weekend.
BTW, what kind of changes in your routine would be needed to switch to body
building? (just curious - not intending to go that route)

will make me feel like I am keeping my upper body strong. I actually like
the look of a well muscled woman....not the really, really weird huge ones,
but I wouldn't mind nice definition. Of course, it will do me no good to
build those nice muscles if I hide them under fat....soooo weight loss is a
part of that. I could also just do general strength training too. I do
know that I have discovered I like pushing myself to lift increasingly
heavier weights...I am not the type who worries about bulking up. Chris,
Kathy and I are all basically kindred spirits in that regard. When I know
what it entails...I'll let you know!
