okay, better new diet...

Heh, true. I suppose it's the "more bang for your buck", theory. Sure you could eat tons and tons of heads of cabbage, and have volume coming out of your ears until you're ready to throw up, and still have "less calories".
My version of "more bang for your buck" is getting exactly what I want, and budgeting the calories accordingly. I am not after getting "more plates full". I'll accept the fact that 1 tablespoon of real olive oil on my salad is indeed 120 calories, but I *love* it, it's tasty, and it sticks with me due to it being a slow-digesting fat. And yes, I make room for it in my diet.
People in the past have told me, with the air of someone waiting for my jaw to drop, "Oh well for those calories I could have had *four* salads! ". Well, tough. I don't want four salads, I want my *one* salad that tastes exactly the way I want it to taste and feels the way I want it to feel :-) <grin>

And it's perfectly possible to have your stomach so full with fibers and water you want to vomit *and* still be hungry. That's extremelly unpleasant... Some people seem not to make the difference between a distanded stomach and satiety... After several high volume low cal diets, I guess you're actually conditioned not to make the difference, which is why things get ugly when you stop the miracle diet and go back to normal food which you will eat until you fill your stomach.

I mix real olive oil into Maple Grove Farms carb free/fat free balsamic vinaigrette because it's a flavorful commercial dressing with no sugar. I know I could make my own, but they never come out as good.

If so, your "diet" is not at all a bad start! You may want to look at _Beyond 120 year Diet_ by Roy Walford. A diet that is based on 75 years of research, showing dramatic increase in lifespan of many animal species who are fed a reduced calorie diet that is rich in nutrients.
While I eat only 1 big apple per day, I eat approximately as much vegetables by mass as you suggest, so I feel that I can comment.
What you proposed would be a great diet healthwise. I would still gain weight on it because high fat calorie dense food does not take much stomach space, and cannot be displaced by greens. So, even though I eat lots of green stuff, I have to watch how much other stuff (esp nuts)I eat. That said, vegs do make maintaining weight considerably easier, and besides, I do not get colds anymore.

So if you want protein or fat, it would be on top of what she said to eat first.
Her diet is a little funny, but quite reasonable as a start.
I would, however, eat an equivalent quantity of cabbage instead of lettuce.

So Icould eat , say, 100 grams of protein and 45 grams of fat, which is equivalent to a pound of relatively lean meat. Not bad at all.
I agree that for people who need to eat much less, such a diet would put much stricter limits on fat/protein.

I can easily eat a pound of cabbage in one sitting and I do not have problems that you alluded to:) I got used to it.

In my database, an average apple is 80 calories, for 800 calories. And 100g of carrots is 43 calories, so 900g (I've no idea how much 10 carrots might actually weigh) would be 387. This would get you to 1187, plus the lettuce. I still wouldn't think it would add up to the OP's total, but it's closer. I wonder why your data is different than mine.

When I first started learning about calories years ago, I think an average eating apple was said to be 40, but more up to date information I've seen in several places indicates around 50. As for carrots, I put a bag of 10 reasonably large ones on the scale to arrive at 900g. I calculated these at around 25 calories per 100g. This also ties in with the 6 calories an ounce I remember learning years ago. I've never thought about the calories in lettuce. I once met a woman in an eating disorders group who was so food-obsessed she weighed her lettuce - that struck me as scary.
The database I use for calorie info is www.weightlossresources.co.uk I tried looking at fitday, but I don't get on with it very well as we don't use cups as a unit of measurement here, and the food is expressed in American ways which I don't understand very well (probably just laziness on my part).

A lot of databases still list the calories of an "average" apple or orange on the weight of a tennis-ball-sized fruit, from fifty some-odd years ago, instead of the size of the fruits actually sold.

According to the USDA Nutrient Database 1 large apple (3 1/4" diameter, approx 2 per pound) has 110 calories 1 medium apple (2 3/4" diameter, approx 3 per pound - 138g) has 72 calories 1 small apple (2.5" diameter, approx 4 per pound - 106g) has 55 calories
So to have about 9 calories *per* apple, you'd have to have something between the medium and large apple.
At any rate, I couldn't eat that many apples per day without a tremendous blood sugar fog.
