Hey all,
I've been adapting a better lifestyle and have slowly been changing over the
foods I eat at work, but I have a problem- when I get home and I'm cooking
for my BF and me, I can't seem to break out of our 'usuals'. I cook the
stuff I know how to because it's fast and easy- I get home around 5:30 so
there isn't alot of prep work and such I can do.
Anyone have any good sites for recipes?

Not really but pad thai doesn't take long. Get
the sauce in a packet or a jar. Stir fry some
veggies, stick in tofu if you want. Put the rice
noodles in boiling water, by the time the veggies
are ready the noodles are ready. Toss both in the
wok or frying pan with the sauceand you're done.
Takes less than 20 minutes, really good, use healthy olive
or sesame oil particularly the latter.
Or, the day you have the most time, make a big
pot of soup with beef or chicken, onions, garlic,
and any veggies that catch your fancy in the store.
Heat n eat with a chunk of healthy bread.
Or, the day you have the most time, make a pot
of brown rice. The rest of the week, stir fry with
veggies and garlic, beat an egg, toss together, and
cook the eggs through. Takes 15 minutes or less.
Or the day you have the most time, roast some
beef or chicken and make sandwiches the rest
of the week. Use coleslaw for dressing, or
use bok choy greens instead of lettuce.
Tuna salad -- add grated carrot, use real onions
and celery, use a clove of garlic and some chopped
red bell pepper. Top with tomato and bok choy
greens, and DON'T have potato chips or Doritos.
Eat with a healthy high-fiber bread and have
bean salad or pickled beets or olives on the side.
Snack on Mariani or Anne's House of Nuts
prunes, dried cranberries, and apricots. They
are software and sweeter than Dole.

Great suggestions, thanks!

In what way is bok choy superior to, say, green leaf lettuce?
I'm not being argumentative, I'm honestly curious...

Ah, you must have missed last week's bok choy discussion ;-)
Someone (Beverly?) posted this link

I hope that it to answer your question! Have a great weekend!

Hi coop --
I LOVE www.recipezaar.com "where the recipes are" lol. You can search
by anything you can think of -- special diets, course, ingredients,
whatever. All the recipes I have used from there have been very good,
but I'll admit I'm picky. This is the best place for asian recipes I
have found so far. YMMV of course.

I can't help you there, but I'll tell you how I handle the same
situation, which is one of two ways:
1. Break down your current recipes by ingredient and figure out
the calorie count. (DietPower and FitDay PC are good for this.)
From there you can use alternative ingredients or eat smaller
portions of the original version. You can get advice from this
group and/or rec.food.cooking on slimming down your current
recipes.
2. Don't cook. Eat something appropriate to your WOE and let your
BF cook for himself. DH is terrific about this -- a couple of times
per week, he takes care of dinner for himself and our son. I eat
with them, I just heat up one of my pre-made meals, which I make
and freeze when my schedule allows, not when everyone is hungry.
It helps that they like stuff I can't stand anyway (like spaghetti
with store-bought sauce, yuck)...

We eat too much pasta right now, so instead of cutting down the portions I
want to try to integrate new meals. And Fitday is great! I've only been
using it for 4 days but it's been so helpful and motivating.

DH and I have been on a "try something new each week" kick. That has
been fun and we are able to really improve our repertoire that way.

Oh, I see -- I don't like pasta that much so that didn't occur to me.
The only thing I really miss is my fettucini with cream and parmesaen
cheese; I haven't been brave enough to check the ingredients with
DietPower and see how bad it is, I just quit making it. :-)

Isn't having software assistance amazing?! I remember trying to track
calories before PCs, yeesh...

I use a recipe organizer called Living Cookbook (bad name, I know!).
You can download a free trial from livingcookbook.com and see if it does
what you want.

These are the ones I have bookmarked there are tons of sites out there. You
could also do a google for whatever ingredient you're interested in finding
recipes for, i.e. tofu + recipes.

You might try going to http://www.savingdinner.com
and clicking on the links for Menu Mailer. Leanne has an email
program with weekly menu and shopping lists, in regular (low fat)
and low-carb versions.
I don't use it myself as I have plenty of menus of my own,
but a lot of people like it (although it's recently become a
paid subscription). You might get some ideas from the sample
weekly menus/shopping lists on the site, though, if you don't
care to subscribe.
