The other day I attended a conference where I ran into a man -- Terry
-- who used to work for me, whom I'd not seen in 6-7 years. When I
greeted him, he only recognized me because I had a nametag on. But I
only recognized him because of his, too; he was rather heavy before
but must have put on 150 lbs. since I'd last seen him. His first
words to me, once he realized who I was, were, "Wow! What plan are
you on??" I thought that was a pretty weird question to start out a
conversation, since it didn't obviously refer to diet. But I realized
what he meant and just said, "The old eat less, exercise more plan --
no magic." I had to restrain myself from commenting on his increased
size, though he mentioned it later.
When Terry was saying goodbye after the meeting, he said, "You've
inspired me to go back to the gym!" I asked, "Do you belong to a gym
now?" Terry: "Yes". Me: "Which one?" Terry: "I forget what it's
called." Me: "Um, this doesn't seem like a good sign."
I wonder if he'll change...

The fact that I'm exercising more was all-to-evident with the client who
showed up 3 minutes after I completed my hour-long run/hike this
morning. He knows I've lost a lot of weight and he got some evidence
today of how I do it. (Via sweat!)
But he tried to engage me in some Atkins bashing. I guess one of his
co-workers is doing the whole ketosis thing and has smelly breath and is
annoying to be around. He tried to get me to say that was the wrong way
to do it.
I told him that the trick is to figure out how to eat less. That Atkins
people lose weight because they manage their appetites so that they eat
less calories. Part of the trick in losing weight is to figure out how
you need to feed your body so that eating less works for you.
I left it at that, but I really feel that's the whole trick to "eat
less". Whether you do it via portion control or Atkins or 2 pounds or
whatever, you've got to figure out how to eat enough so you're sated and
have enough energy on the calorie budget that works for your body. The
answer will necessarily be different for everyone.
So even though I started out following the Body for Life diet, I only
picked that because it worked best with my requirements. The real
"plan" is eat less, exercise more. And that's also what I tell people
when they ask.
