I would like some suggestions regarding water retention. I do retain
during "that time" of the month, and I am noticing that the more
weight I lose, the more I retain water. I'm consistently drinking
water and 1 cup of unsweetened red clover tea per day. Water
consumption is up to about 6) .5 liter bottles daily. This morning I
have apparently shed water weight but my rings still feel snug. I am
wondering if the altitude and dryness of the air is going to have an
effect on water retention. I typically eat home prepared (read: not
processed) foods, and my sodium levels are good according to fitday.
Should I be drinking more water, or is this just going to be an
ongoing thing due to the environment in which I live? I never noticed
the retention when I was really heavy, but it becomes more noticable
as I am working on my weight loss goals.
For background about the environment -- I am at over 1 mile high and
the semi-arid climate typically supports humidity levels in the teens.
Very little rainfall, etc. Almost high desert conditions.
Any thoughts welcome.

My thought is that as long as this retention is not causing you a lot
of discomfort, there is no special diet-related reason to do anything
to avoid it. So your weight goes up and down once a month, you know
why, just be aware of it, that's all.

Increase potassium with foods like strawberries, low fat dairy stuff and
avoid sodium. Check you blood pressure when you are feeling bloated as
increased fluid can raise pressure. Like Ig said, it isn't a problem unless
it makes you feel uncomfortable. Me? I feel awful when I cart around extra
fluid.
