Remember back when Jayjay joined a bootcamp class at the crack of dawn?
I joined a running class that meets at 7 am on Saturday mornings.  (My
husband was shocked when he heard the time.  I pointed out that I wasn't
scheduled for anything else then.)

I'm just mentioning it here so you can ask me about it tomorrow.  :-)

Ok, so I'll ask now, since I will be sleeping in tomorrow.   First day of in
something like 5 weeks now.   :)

How was you running class?

Harder than I thought.  I've certainly run that far and for that long,
but always on treadmills or flat tracks.  Introducing even slight grades
made it noticeably tougher.  I was near the back of the pack the entire
time.  I wasn't obviously unfit to join the class [already in progress
for 7 weeks now] but I was no ringer.

In fact, I'm a bit bummed about my bum.  I had noticeably more junk in
the trunk than anyone else there.  I wasn't the oldest, but no one else
looked like they were in weight-loss mode.

Ah, well, it's all part of my master plan.  I figure if I keep ACTING
like I'm at 23% body fat then I will eventually get there.  We just need
to make sure no camera catches a glimpse of my fat a.s trundling down
the road.  I'll go back next week and try again.

Hey, I noticed that myself.  I got where the 12 miles hikes were no problem,
but then we introduced trails with elevation gains, and it kicked my a.s in
half the time.  It's just a matter of continuously challenging your body.  I
think that once you get comfortable, it's time to challenge the body in a
different way.  Sounds like you are doing that!  And you'll be better for it
in the end!

With age comes wisdom, and wisdom says you shouldn't compare yourself to
others.  Hard to do, I know.  Have you read the desiderata?

"If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter; for
always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your
achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career,
however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time."

Just keep remembering how far you have come, and the only comparing you
ought to be doing is between where you were, where you are now, and where
you want to BE.

You'll make it.  But you must be in acceptance with what 23% looks like on
YOU.  And I'll tell you what I would think if I "saw your fat a.s trundling
down the road".  I would think, right on!  Someone who is actually doing
something about their health!  That's always what I think when I see fat
people huffing and puffing with their walkmans or whatever on the trail.
The vast majority never will make those efforts...

Thanks, Det, I really appreciated your kind (and wise) words.

I had a hard time getting back into trail/road running after spending the
winter on a treadmill.

That's the key, stick with it.  Today was a big 5K race in the area (and a
marathon) and I wasn't able to participate because it was also the last day
of the grad class I was teaching.  My knees have been bothering me a lot
lately so I haven't been training and it would have been a waste of $20 for
me to enter even if I was available.  I'm running about 8-10 miles a week
now at 11 minute pace just to stay running.

I wish we had a running club or some type of class like you have in my area.
Some friends and I took some initial steps to start one, but it was a ton of
work that none of us had the time to do.

Keep up the great work.  You'll be more than ready for that 5k coming up.

Thanks for the encouragement.  I wish I could be of more comfort to you.
You sound so beleaguered by all this.

That sounds great to me.  You've got to be able to manage your weight
with a routine that integrates into your life.  Running 8 to 10 miles a
week may be all I ever achieve: that a three mile run every other day.
That seems sufficient to me.

This is sponsored at a local gym.  It's interesting in that it is a free
class, it's open to everyone in the community, and people all over town
seem to know about it.  They run a 12 week beginning class (aiming
towards being able to run 5K non-stop at the end of 12 weeks) and an
intermediate class (aiming to run 10K non-stop.)

Judging from the participants, it seems to be more of a social club for
people who can already run.  Hmmm, maybe like ASD is for dieters.  :-)

Way  to go Dally,

I wish I could run again.  It sounds like you'll have a lot of fun running
with others.  I hope you really enjoy it and get where you can gain distance
and decrease your time.

Sincerely,

Paul

Thanks, Paul.  I don't recall why you can't run [now], but don't worry,
there are lots of ways to achieve fitness.  I neither bike nor swim, for
example.

Cool!  I know of several people who have joined a local running group
that does the Galloway (run walk) method.  I think that this is the
website for their group:
http://www.jeffgalloway.com/training_groups/raleigh.html  I'd love to
hear more about your running group.  Good luck with it!
