Well, the good news is that the insulin pump has been shut down.  My little
pancreas is officially in remission.

The bad news is that I am not eating enough to stay healthy.

This week has been more hectic than usual.  I picked up a huge project with
an imminent deadline and will work nights and weekends for a while to get it
out the door. I got up this morning and had to mail stuff so I walked to the
post office and back (about four miles) and as I got home around 7:30 a.m.,
the phone was ringing.  I had to make a mad dash for a client meeting and
squeeze in lunch at another client's meeting.

I ended up in a meeting at 12:30 in a hotel meeting room with lot's of
available food but I had an agenda and barely noticed the food.  From there
I went to Ninfa's which is a Mexican restaurant, to get signatures from
another client and glanced at the menu but didn't have enough time to wait
around.  Finally, I got home at 4:30 and had a protein shake (25 gms protein
and a cup of yogurt).

I have no appetite and find it difficult to eat when I am not hungry.  Isn't
that how I gained weight to begin with?  Yet, when I enter my food (all two
items) into fitday, it sort of looks unhealthy.

Also, I got my lab drawn Monday.  My lipids were a tad off.  My LDL was up
just a little and my total cholesterol was 216.  The HDL/LDL ratio was fine.
I am not going to lose sleep over it.  It was drawn on day 8 of SBD and
although I enjoy my eggs, I am not eating very much sat fat at all.  My
fitday break down says that over half the fats I am eating are
monounsaturated.  I will have them re-drawn in six months and see where I
am.

An interesting lab result was free testosterone.  It was slightly elevated.
I seem to remember something about PCOS and elevated testosterone.  Although
I sort of fit the pic of PCOS with the insulin resistance and occasional
skin troubles, I never really paid attention.  After all, the treatment for
both PCOS and IR is essentially the same unless you are a younger woman
wanting to have children and the PCOS is causing infertility.  That would
not be me.  I spoke with a Nurse Practitioner today who says the
testosterone and insulin relationship is definitely there but he doesn't
recommend any pharmaceutical therapy to deal with it at this point.  He
advised to have other hormone levels drawn and reports (Yikes!), it could be
the 'peri-menopausal'.  I assured him I was not old enough and he laughed.

The rest of the week looks very busy as well.  I will, however, make it a
point to exercise before hitting the door and I will pack some suitable
foods for eating that travel well.  I bought some nifty salad thingies at
the store last week.  They hold the dressing separate and when you push on
the lid, it releases the salad dressing and then you can shake the container
to distribute the salad.  I will pack a salad and some nuts this evening
before I go to bed and make it a point to have a protein shake before I
leave the house.

Oh, my weight.  As predicted the weight loss has slowed down - 136.  That is
down from 143 - 7 pounds.  My energy level has increased dramatically, as
well.  And judging by my current challenges, it is a good thing.

Now, I am looking for low glycemic carbs to add back to my diet next Monday.
Any suggestions?

*bzzzt* even at your youthful age you are "old enough."  I'm 37 and my gyn
is convinced I'm in the early stages of peri-menopause.  A mild dose of
hormones has stabilized my mood and my weight and the water retention.  I've
also been taking ALA to help with the insulin, but adding the hormones has
helped in leaps and bounds.

I'm 30 and peri-menopausal.  (3rd generation of women in my family to go
through menopause in their 30's)  I rushed to have my 2nd baby (just born
this February) thanks to my deafening biological clock. LOL

I've been enjoying some recreational eating of apples lately.  I put a
gob of natural peanutbutter in a bowl and just smear the apple slices
through it.  Measure the peanutbutter to know what you're eating ('cuz
it all gets wiped up) but it's a great healthy snack that is delicious,
munchy-style and good for me.

I haven't figured out what peri-menopause means.  I'm getting more chin
hairs (that I immediately pluck) and my periods are getting closer
together (28 days versus 31 days for the past dozen years) and I think
those might be symptoms, but I'm turning 40 this fall and it makes sense
that my body is changing, along with all the lack of estrogen I must
have from losing 25% of my body weight.

I also carry a Balance Bar.  The yogurt-peanut one doesn't melt as badly
as some of the other kinds.  And I've got a little tupperware tub I put
peanutbutter in and carry an apple.  ;-)

I've also been enjoying Thomas's 100% whole wheat bagels.  I've tried
the low-carb bagels and prefer the larger kind (where I only eat 1/2 a
bagel).

Good luck!

Woo Hoo!

It is what causes most to get fat but in exactly the opposite of the
way most think.  Dieting triggers excess hunger, triggers excess
refeed, triggers regaining more than you lost in the first place.
So really, it's avoiding food in the first place that causes weight
gain.

So eating should have extremely little to do with hunger.  Ideally
food should be taken in to *prevent* hunger from ever happening in
the first place!  If you're hungry you've allowed yourself to
under eat.  And there's the fine balance that if you haven't been
hungry in over a week there's room to taper your portions down to
ensure against over eating.  Under eating is at least as much a
problem as over eating.  They are two sides of the same coin.

Stuff in plastic bags!  Forewarned is forearmed.  If your problem
was not getting enough food, the solution is to take it with you
first thing in the morning.  Veggies, precooked meat slices, you
name it in plastic storage bags in an insulated plastic lunch pail
with one of those blue ice things.
