OK, world ... I have made the commitment to lose all of my extra poundage by
the end of the year (or earlier, which would be highly preferable to me),
through calorie restriction and exercise. I'm using fitday for tracking all of
this.

I can't wait to fit into 90% of the clothes in my closet again, among countless
other benefits.

Good news to come, I hope.

Cool another calorie counting person :)

I was starting to feel lonely lol!  Everyone is into the low carb thing.

This site is useful for looking up calories in case you get tired of
logging into a website everytime you want to make records of your
diet:http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/

Well, if you've seen any of my message you'll know that I'm another
calorie counter :-).  Works for me!

There are plenty of calorie counters in the group!

Calorie counting is such a logical thing for me also.

I love the math and the results <g>

I do not count calories (too tedious), but I do limit them via portion
control.

Well, I do try to curb the carbs these days, but only moderately.  It's
still a calories in vs. calories out thing, so I'll always be watching
calories!

I also count calories and keep a spreadsheet as my daily intake "diary" and
management tool.  I do much better when I log my consumption in than when I
just try to control my portion sizes.  It really helps to look back over the
last two weeks eating log so I know that the weight gain of the past week or
so (6 pounds at its greatest) is just water retention.  I dropped two pounds
of the water yesterday and I hope the rest will leave soon!

losing 45 lbs in 7 months, pretty doable but takes quite a bit of
effort. Fitting into clothes may be, comparably, a pretty small
benefit compared to some other benefits.

Sure, important things like serum cholesterol readings, but I've gotta go with
something that motivates me every morning.

Good luck.  Do you have a name?  Are you female or male?  What's your age?

I want to be encouraging, but you're making two mistakes I feel
compelled to warn you about, just because I suspect you might be more
successful if you bear these in mind.

First of all, you're hot to lose pounds.  You should be trying to lose
fat.  Be very careful about losing muscle.  I recommend you get your
body fat tested and do resistance training (i.e., weight-lifting) and
try to get enough protein so that you don't lose muscle that you need to
feel energetic, burn calories and keep you from injuries.  You might
enjoy reading Covert Bailey's "The Ultimate Fit or Fat" to learn more
about what I'm talking about, or spend some time reading
http://www.stumptuous.com/weights.html.

The other problem is that you've set a weight-related goal and I
frequently find that people stop making the effort once it becomes
apparent that they aren't on a linear track to lose the weight at the
right rate.  The fact is, fat loss is a process.  I needed to spend time
conquering my various issue that got me fat to begin with, and sometimes
I lost a lot of weight and sometimes I didn't lose any.  I'd prefer to
see you having a behavior based goal, like, "I will go four weeks in a
row working out at least five times each week" or "I will eat clean six
days in a row" or maybe a training goal like, "I will run a 5K by Labor
Day".

Over the past two years I've lost 70 pounds, bit by bit, in fits and
starts.  I really think fat loss ought to be measured in retrospect, not
charted out into the future.  Even when things were going really well I
was only losing 5 pounds a month.  That's nothing if you've got 70
pounds to lose.  But do it over and over, month and month and you've
done something sustainable.

Good luck.

Thank you. Jane, female, 40.

Well, I'm trying to keep things simple. I'll have a good sense of where I am in
the process by trying on clothes, stepping on a scale, or seeing how much
endurance I have for exercise. I know that weight loss doesn't exactly
correspond to fat loss, and that it's important to keep and build muscle
strength while losing fat, which may result in even a net gain in weight. I
know there are thin-looking people with a too-high body fat percentage. I've
exercised regularly for many years and intend to continue.

I do have ongoing, specific goals related to eating habits and time spent
exercising in addition to the weight-based goal. Re the weight-based goal, I
happen to like the idea of seeing a graph of my weight. It is something that
motivates me. Different things may motivate others.

Congratulations on your fat loss.
