Kasey - 12 May 2004 18:10 GMT I hit it today! I've lost 100 pounds in exactly seven months.
I will post a separate thread over the weekend on my plans for losing the next 50 pounds. I'm recovering from wrist surgery and am only supposed to use the computer for 45 minutes at a time. I'm typing with one hand.
In the meantime, join me in doing the happy nekkid century dance!
As always, YM (and dance) MV.

Diane Nelson - 13 May 2004 10:22 GMT Kasey,
That is awesome. What an accomplishment. Way to go!! Good luck. Since I haven't been here long please fill me in on how you accomplished this. I would really like to know. Please give the details on how you did this with diet and how much exercise and what kind?
thanks.

I am doing this under the supervision of my primary care physician, a nutritionist and a psychotherapist. I suspect that people get annoyed when I post repeatedly that one needs to consult medical professionals before and during a major change in WOE, but this is all about health. Like many middle-aged people, I have myriad health problems, not all caused or aggravated by my weight.
My program, selected and directed by the nutritionist, is 1,500 calories a day. I use fitday.com obsessively, and can document everything I've eaten since Oct. 13.
The 1,500 figure is an average. With the occasional social event at which I eat more, I have no more than 2,000, and reduce calories the rest of the week by 200 or so a day.
Exercise has been difficult. In the beginning, I couldn't walk much because my arthritis was aggravated by my being supermorbidly obese. Once I lost about 10 percent of my total weight, I became more ambulatory. I started (and still do) parking at the far end of lots when I drove. I took short walks around my neighborhood.
Once I got below 300 pounds, I started taking the stairs instead of the elevator when it was safe. (I live in a decaying mid-Atlantic metropolis, and using public stairwells is not always prudent.) I took longer walks around my neighborhood. I began walking around a reservoir that has foot and bike paths. It's 1.125 miles around.
I'm now walking twice around the lake most days, although very slowly. Despite my weight loss, arthritis in my hips and knees make it difficult to walk faster.
As always, YMMV.

Kasey, glucosamine is a supplement that helps many people suffering from osteoarthritis, have you checked it out? My doc recommended it for me. Great job so far, you are showing a good deal of determination and progress.

>Kasey >365/265/??? Kasey, this comment made me wonder what age you are? I'm in my late 50s and although I suppose I count as middle aged I certainly don't expect health problems as a result of my age, and am lucky to have virtually none. I do wonder if you might find as you continue to lose that more of the health issues than you think might turn out to be be to do with your weight after all, and that you're in for a pleasant surprise. I agree with you 100% about the YMMV, and I admit I know nothing about your health issues so am probably quite wrong here, but I found myself reading this sentence in your post several times and wondering about it. You're making great progress with the weight loss - keep it up. janice
Kasey - 14 May 2004 05:59 GMT >>>I certainly don't expect health problems as a result of my age,<<
The risk for much disease increases with age.
I hope your statement doesn't mean you aren't getting regular mammograms, colonoscopies, EKGs and tests for glaucoma because you "don't expect health problems as a result of my age."
>>I do wonder if you might find as you continue to lose that more of the health issues than you think might turn out to be be to do with your weight after all,<<
I am unaware of any scientific data linking hepatitis C or glaucoma to obesity.
As always, YMMV.

I take your point about the hepatitis and glaucoma Kasey, but as I said, I wrote without knowledge of your health issues. Here in the UK all we get automatically and free under the NHS is a mammogram and once every three years (although it's only automatic for women between 50 and 64), and a cervical smear test every 3 years.
Colonscopy, EKGs (not sure if this is the same as ECG) and any other routine tests are only available on the NHS if you present with some worrying symptoms, and then your doctor can refer you - you can't refer yourself. I get glaucoma tests because I wear glasses and it's part of the standard eye test, but I don't think everyone does.
