Well I came home today after 9 days in hospital and 2 major surguries,
how do I feel? exhasuted! The first op on friday removed the lump on
my thyroid, full anathetic and 5hour on the intensive station, loads
of painkillers ughh. Monday go the results back, no good news, the
lump was cancerous so off for more surgery to remove the whole thyroid
same proceedure basically as friday but more painful. I now have to
have radiotherapie before I can start with the thyroid hormones (
about 6 to 12 weeks or so) On the whole I feel optimistic but have a
few down phases each day. I am very concerned about not gaining weight
in the next few weeks, I am tried and don't feel up to exercising,
after a 15 min walk I sleep to 2 hours. I have load of reading to do
as you guy have been busy while I was away.
Sore tired but glad to be back

Thanks for the update and I'm glad to see you back. Get well soon and don't
fret over a few pounds - I know that's easier said than done<g>. The
important thing is to get well - you can lose any pounds you might gain once
you've recovered and are on the thyroid medication.
Years ago (in my late 20's) I had a thyroid problem and gained 30+ pounds in
a short period of time. Once the medication was started those pounds seemed
to melt away.
Welcome back

Did your system become dependent on the medication or were you able to
stop the medication?

I took the medication for about a year and haven't had to take it again. My
doctor checks my thyroid regularly and I've never had any more problems.

Thanks for teaching me something new.
I thought once a person started taking something like that their own
systems would never take up the slack again.

I believe that it depends on just what exactly is the thyroid
condition.

Sorry to hear about bad histology! On the plus side, thyroid cancer
may be the most treatable cancer and you have great chances at a good
and long life. My grandfather had stage III thyroid cancer 30+ years
ago and underwent complete thyroidectomy and radiotherapy. He is still
alive and in a good shape for a 81 year old.
Good luck michelle! I would not worry too much about weight gain, if
some comes back you'd be able to work it off, and it is possible that
you'd lose some weight due to things outside your control.

Good to hear from you Michelle. Sorry things didn't turn out as well as
you'd hoped. I wouldn't sweat the exercise (no pun intended) until you give
yourself a chance to heal. You'll be able to work your way back up to it
eventually. Right now you have other priorities. Take good care of yourself
and welcome back!

Gosh Michelle, I had no idea all this was going on for you, I must have
missed some threads. Best of luck in your recovery and welcome home.. I
can understand your concern with gaining weight during your recovery but
I would think your nutrition is more of a priority and with GOOD
nutrition comes maintaining where you are now. The best way to assist
your body to heal itself is to feed it vitamin dense, wholesome,
nutritional food.
Take care of YOU.

So sorry to hear about this Michelle. Right now, though, the most
important thing is for you to get through the surgery and make a good
recovery. Weight loss is important, yes, but you must take care of
your overall health.
Good luck with the surgery, and do keep us posted.

Michelle, I'm glad you're back, though sorry you're so worn out and
that the lump was cancerous. I think thyroid cancer is easily dealt
with by removing the gland, though. I have a couple of friends who
had it years ago and they've been fine ever since their surgery.
Once you get your thyroid function in order you should find it easier
to manage your weight. Meanwhile, I'd focus on just eating sensibly
for recovering your health and strength, not worrying about dieting
per se. For that, I'd eat nutritious foods in whatever quantity
you're hungry for.

Hi Michelle and I bet you are glad to be home. I am sorry you are going
through all of this. I wouldn't sweat the weight gain either. You have
other things to worry about in regards to your health. Best wishes and I
hope you get some rest.
