Hi everyone,
I have been subscribed to this newsgroup for a couple years now, I have posted
a few times and lurked quite a bit but never seemed to really get my act
together and actually loose any weight. I am ready to change that now. I hve
read in several fitness magazines about how many calories are in one pound of
fat. But I can't remember the ratio or how many calories a week to cut from
your diet and how many calories you have to burn during exercise to loose one
pound of fat. If anyone can remember that ratio I would appreciate it. I am
looking forward to the success of my weight loss journey and getting to know
others here. I hope to post more too. As time permits. Good luck to

The answer is 3500 but that's really an non-answer since everybody's
metabolism is different.
What I did was start eating less and exercising more, looking to keep
a steady 2lbs/week loss rate (no less / no more).
I don't count calories per se, but I do take the time to learn how
many I'm eating (roughly, to the nearest 100).
So far my loss has been rather consistent, so I haven't had to do much
fine tuning yet.
I've hit some 3 or 4 day plateaus, but didn't panic and kept to the
plan (starving yourself or over-exercising in panic is not healthy),
and the loss materialized soon enough to stay on schedule.

Good luck. I think women have a harder time with weight loss so such
an informal approach as mine won't be as efficacious, but good luck
too.
If I had known weight loss was so easy and painless I would have done
it when I was 200, and not 230...

It doesn't matter, if you take in fewer calories then you use, you will
lose weight. You definately want to lose some through exercise, as
exercise will make it easier for several reasons.
Anyway
- studies show that people who lose a maximum of 1 lb a week have the
best chance of keeping the weight off.
- to lose 1lb a week you need to create a deficit of 3500 calories a week.
- to lose a 1 lb a week you need to create a deficit of 500 calories a
day. The conservative approach which I think you are thinking of is to
cut you diet by 250 calories and to do 250 calories worth of exercise.

So, for example, if your calorie deficit is 500 per day, you lose 1
pound per week.
If it is 1,000 calories per day, you lose 2 pounds per week.
A good approach to losing weight is to reduce eating by 500 calories
(an equivalent of a big mac) per day and exercise extra 500 calories
per day (in ADDITION to your regular work, house duties etc).
That works out to be a 2 lbs per week weight loss, without too much
pain or malnutrition.
