The whey protein I use is a powder that I think also includes some
sort of flavoring -- sort of vanilla-like or malt-like.  It's not
sweetened or anything.  It can be put into shakes with other
ingredients, but I usually just put it in my cereal for breakfast.

You can also buy protein shake mix, which includes protein powder
(whey, soy, or a combination) along with other ingredients, typically
including sugar or a sugar-substitute to make the shake taste good.
They also come in flavors like chocolate.  These are reasonable as
occasional meal substitutes.  I guess one could follow a plan of
having them for breakfast and lunch (a la Slimfast, but there are many
healthier shakes than theirs), but I haven't done anything like that.
I'd rather try to rely more on normal food.
