Yes. My average speed (what the bike computer calculates over the
entire ride), has increased since the fall. My hill work is somewhat
better as well. I was actually just going for maintaining my fitness
level through the off-season but I think that it did actually improve
(or maybe just change) my riding somewhat.

Yes, I am in the same situation here. I have decided to continue to go
to spin class 2x a week (Wed and Fri) during the summer and ride 3-4x a
week outside (Sat, Sun, Tues and perhaps Thur), weather permitting. I
go to the gym on Monday and Thursday for other stuff now.

Thanks. I imagine it will be late summer before the spin classes start so
this will work into my schedule at the right time. The trainer I spoke
with thought this might be a class I would be interested in taking.
Hills will probably be a problem for me as most of the bike trails around
here are old railroad beds and don't have a lot of hills. Some of them do
have some very long uphill grades. Some of the newer trails they've
constructed to join the parks do have hills but I haven't had a chance to
ride them. I've been taking a different route around the neighborhood to
include a couple of hills in my evening rides. Who knows - maybe someday
I'll be able to tackle the "killer hill" on our ride to the amusement park!
I'm still getting use to the new road bike. So far I haven't had too many
problems. It was quite a challenge to change from the handle bar shifters
to the STI shifters. Now that I feel comfortable with those I think I'm
ready to tackle the SPD pedals. Everyone has warned me I'll probably take
a fall or two before I learn to disengage them when I stop. I'm just
hoping I'm near a grassy area when this happens<g>
