Can the Atkins plan be followed along with the use of the prescription Meridia
for weight loss? Or should one be on a low fat diet and use Meridia?

Well, since you asked, the correct answer is to skip the Meridia and eat
less. Choose whatever menu makes you feel best on the appropriate
amount of calories. I recommend you read the Zone diet, "Eat, Drink &
Be Healthy" and stuff about the glycemic index before you buy in to the
Atkins phenomenon. Don't do anything to your body just because a diet
guru got you to pay him money to tell you his trick. Feed your body the
way it needs to be fed (and understand why) and you'll be fine.

What does your doctor say?

You know all the ads for Meridia say you have
to exercise and follow a reduced calorie plan.
The same things without Meridia will also result
in weight loss. Why are you spending all that
money on Meridia?

It is a prescription medication that reduces appetite. Since
ketosis reduces appetite, it is unneeded on any low carb plan
that includes ketosis. Most non-ketotic low carb plans also
reduce appetite to some extent and so it is also of very little
use on them.

Simply put, it deals with a problem that exists on other types
of plans. The OP just plain doesn't believe the claims that
low carbing reduces appetite, so the OP is searching for a
brute-force fix to a problem that doesn't exist.

The purpose of Meridia is to reduce appetite. Being ON
Atkins reduces appetite without medication. Yes, I know
right now you don't believe that claim. It is true no
matter that you don't believe it. So there is no point
to using Meridia while on Atkins. There's hunger in the
first week or so and if you want to try it then okay,
but after the first week you may as well be taking
placebo tablets.

Try running that one the other way around. Most people
(not all) who do low fat end up hungry, being on low
fat makes Meridia useful.

If you think Meridia is useful because you've used it on
low fat plans before, that experience does not apply.
