Dewolla Stepon - 21 May 2004 04:02 GMT Don't know what happened to me, but after being extra good yesterday, diet-wise, today in the early afternoon as I was puttering around the yard I began feeling very light headed and my hands started to shake a bit. I went inside and had a glass of orange juice and some dried pineapple, and then for some reason I just couldn't get enough to eat. So very unlike me, at least for the past 18 weeks or so.
Mind you, I didn't binge on "bad" things, but I did go overboard on beans, salsa, apples, whole wheat bread, and string cheese throughout the day. I wrote everything down and recorded it, so I'm not trying to sweep it under the rug. I ate about twice what I normally have in a day.
In the old days I would have eaten a whole bag of potato chips and a bag of Mother's iced animal cookies, so at least I'm making progress! It will be interesting to see what happens to the old scales in the next couple of days. I'll keep you posted.

The fact is, it's not uncommon for anyone to binge occasionally, especially dieters. You appear to have a positive attitude toward it and don't seem to be beating yourself up for it which is really a good thing. The harder you are on yourself, the more likely you are to set yourself up for future occurrences. In your case with the light headedness and shakes, maybe you were having blood sugar fluctuations or you were just *hungry.* If these symptoms continue, you might need to evaluate your diet and make changes.
When I get really hungry, I go for the apples and string cheese too. :)

Dewolla Stepon - 21 May 2004 16:21 GMT Thanks for the encouragement, Jenn. I felt that even though I was on a binge, if I didn't write it down I would be throwing away all I had done in the last 18 weeks. I heard somewhere the credo "If you bite it, write it!" and if I didn't follow that I'd be only cheating myself.
So, even though I blew through all my Weight Watchers daily points, and flex points, and a few more besides, today is brand new. Gotta keep going!

I went to Bingo last night for the first time in years, and I didn't remember what a high caloric assortment of foods they have (and no outside food is allowed, dangit). Under pressure to hurry up, I had a bowl of clam chowder, a piece of vanilla cake, and a bag of chips (*sigh*). But I logged it all anyway. Fortunately, I had nearly 900 calories left for the day -- I had a feeling it would be necessary...

I expect you won't see much difference on the scales, and if you do it will be gone in a day or so.
Chris
Dewolla Stepon - 21 May 2004 16:23 GMT Hi, Chris, today I gained two pounds! I don't pay much attention to daily fluctuations anymore like I used to, but I'll be happy to get back on track. Thanks for the encouragement!

Now there's a thought... Which is why when I do weigh, it's after taking a good crap.

When I get this it is often due to dehydration I don't feel.
Try drinking 2qts of water first.
If you still feel ravenous, then you really do need more food.

I'll keep you posted. What's more interesting is to check your scales a week from now. Say, how much do you normally eat in a day? And how much extra did you eat?
Also, I am curious if overeating beans had any side effects for you...

Well, Iggy, I am now switched over to WW points and I have been averaging 22-23 points per day. On my binge yesterday I had 58 points! 20 of the points were dried pineapple and orange juice, and I overindulged in Skinny Cow lowfat ice cream treats (5 of them, total 10 points).
As for the bean side effects, I usually have them even eating a normal amount. Good thing I normally stay at home alone during the day!

And you are what now, about 220 lbs at 6'3"? (I forgot)
So, you ate about 15 calories per pound of weight, and you did some medium duty gardening for a few hours?
If it is as I described, I don't think that you did terribly, just not as well as you could.
> 20 of the points were dried pineapple and orange juice, and > I overindulged in Skinny Cow lowfat ice cream treats (5 of them, > total 10 points). Not that I know much about it, but several lowfatters reported that it made them more prone to binging.

It seems to me than you did not really overeat that much, calorie wise, to cause a big weight gain. Worst case, you overate by 500-700 calories, according to my back of the envelope calculations. That's 60-90 grams of fat gained. You simply overdid the volume (poundage) and sugar. Your 2 lbs weight gain is all that stuff stuck inside your guts, pardon my french. You are lucky (or smart) that you had all that healthy stuff on hand! Congratulations...
I personally like to overeat tomatoes...

Orange juice and dried pineapple are mostly sugar and caused a big spike in your blood sugar level. When it dropped down it went really low and caused the intense hunger and binging. The next time you get the hunger shakes, try having something that's mostly protein with your orange juice instead of fruit (dried or fresh) and see if it doesn't help.
I may be over-simplifying the situation and like I say that is my theory and could be wrong. But I've discovered that I have to be careful to balance the carby stuff, especially the sweet stuff, with protein if I don't want to get ravenous. YMMV of course, but it's something to think about.

Dewolla Stepon - 21 May 2004 16:17 GMT Good advice, Tonia. Do you have a recommendation for something to keep on hand for the protein?

I find those keep me from wanthing more.
YMMV

That T Woman - 21 May 2004 20:14 GMT I have a piece of cheese or make a protein drink with the lemonade flavored whey powder that I have. It tastes pretty good just mixed with water and only has 114 calories per scoop. It's Sci Fit Eco Whey brand. Alex's suggestion are good too.

Sounds like a blood sugar drop. My dietician told me that one should wait 15 minutes after eating something for it to affect sugar levels, and even then, it can take a while for the symptoms to subside. BUT, I'm no expert so maybe it was something else.

determined - 22 May 2004 20:08 GMT Sometimes, the body just needs a refeed. You made good food choices, so I wouldn't even consider this a binge or a bad thing. Listen to your body - if you are hungry, you need to eat!
