Make sure you are eating less than your body burns every day.  Exercise as
often as possible.  And a plateau is when you don't lose weight for like a
month when you are doing everything right.  Not just a week or two...

Sounds like your metabolism is catching onto your tricks. Time to step
it up, but don't cut your food intake, instead:

Drink at least 1/2 gallon of plain water a day, not counting the water
you drink to stay hydrated while exercising (1 qt/hr is about right).

If you are only 10 lbs away from slimness you can expect to not lose
much so speedily by just cutting back the calories. You're going to
have to sweat out the remaining weight, and your diet will just
maintain your energy levels and fuel the burn. I'm no expert, but I
believe in occasional marathon burns, of approximately 1500 kcal (3-5
hrs), coupled with healthy eating of proteins and fats to keep your
lean mass.

This was how I stayed skinny as a kid at least. I'll let you know in a
couple of months if this works for adults...

According to www.caloriesperhour.com running at 5 mph for 1 hour will burn
544 calories (I used my age, weight, etc).  I was surprised to see that
biking at 12-14 mph for 1 hour will burn the same amount of calories.  I
don't feel so bad about not being able to run now<g>

Me neither. Running ability is over-rated, unless you live on the
Serengeti.

Problem with biking though is two-fold: more equipment to buy,
maintain, have stolen (much harder for somebody to steal your Nikes),
and more hazardous, as W demonstrated last week.

While this is just intuition, I do believe an occasional 1500 kcal
marathon burn helps goose up the fat metabolism, kinda like taking a
car out on the highway to burn out the carbon maybe...

(though for all I know attendant muscle loss with this is a
significant issue)

I would love to run but the knees won't tolerate it anymore.

Biking can be expensive.  I just bought a new road bike.  I only do minimal
maintenance and depend on the bike shop for everything else so that's an
added expense.  I've never had one stolen (knocking on wood).  I guess I've
either been lucky or overly cautious as I've never had a major accident on
a bike.  I did take a spill last summer when a granddaughter failed to
negotiate a turn and ran into the side of me.   I escaped without any
scrapes or bruises.  She had a nasty scrape on her elbow.

My mother referred to this as 'burning out the cobwebs'<g>

Bicycles can be bought cheaply at garage sales. I bought a racing
bicycle for $2, and my friend says that it would cost about $300
new. My cost was $2. It is in excellent shape.

You don't find too many bikes at garage sales around here.  It's a big
biking community and people hang onto their bikes.  I could have saved a
little money by buying a used one but I doubt too many of the comfort-style
road bikes are available in my size at garage sales, etc.  Too many of the
used road bikes have been altered by the previous owner for their
particular needs.  They're constantly switching out the components and
changing tire sizes.  I've been happy with my new one and will probably
have it for years.  Here's the one I purchased.

Of course I could hold my own garage sale to get rid of some of the bikes
and trailers<g>

That is a beautiful bicycle...

Are those, like, trailers for hauling children?

I wanted to buy one, but ended up buying a child bicycle seat:

Now I am not sure if a child riding in that seat needs a helmet, the
answer is probably yes...

Yes.  I have a Burley solo trailer and one that is molder plastic.  The
molded plastic is just too uncomfortable for rides of any length.  We
sometimes drag it out for short rides around the neighborhood or for towing
items from the grocery store, etc.  It makes a good utility trailer as it's
twice the size of the solo.  The granddaughter prefers the solo as it's
very comfortable.  Here's the solo.  I don't have the walk n' roller kit
but I'm thinking about purchasing it.  They make great strollers on rough
terrain.

Yes.....definately put a helmet on the child.  My granddaughter wears a
helmet in the trailer.  You just never know when it might tip over.

The thing is, when you are riding as many miles a Beverly rides, fit
matters.  If you are cruising around the neighborhood, it doesn't matter
as much -- other than for safety reasons.

Wow!  Very nice.  Ultrega, huh?  ;-)

How tall are you?  What size did you get?

It's 54cm.  I'm only 5'3" but I have a very high waist line so that makes
my legs a little longer.  My sister and I are the same height but she has a
lower waist and her pants are usually 1-2" shorter in the inseam.  I have a
30-31" inseam so almost half of me is legs<G>
At 5'3" I can't wear petites and even the short length are sometimes too
short for me.

I'm still breaking it in.  So far I have no complaints.  I still haven't
switched to the SPD pedals.  I had the bike shop switch the original
pedals.  Mine have SPD on one side and a regular platform on the other. I
haven't been brave enough to engage the cleats in the pedals yet.  I'll
wait until I feel more comfortable.  I don't want to pull one of those
falling over tricks when I stop :(

Regarding the SPDs, I only fell over once at a stop sign.  I think that
I surprised the dog walkers...

EXERCISE.

You can't be healthy without exercise anyway, and as many people have posted
here before, exercise will get you off a plateau.

Many women bloat due to water retention just before their periods,
that could mask your ongoing fat loss. Also, being stuck for a few
weeks after losing a bunch of fat is completely normal in all people.

You might consider also that quite possibly, after you lost weight and
adjusted to eating less, how much you eat now is much closer to how
much your body needs to maintain weight. How much more fat do you have
to lose?

I would not worry too much, and would wait a few weeks before making
any big changes.

> I have been on a diet for 2 months and lost 20 lbs...

And because of that very rapid loss you ended up having unrealistic
expectations.  You are doing fine.

> i had been averaging loosing 3 lbs a week....

Let's take a step back and think about what that actually means to
have a better view.  Fat is 3500-4000 calories per pound.  So you
were losing 12,000 calories per week or 2000 calories per day.
That's about the total human metabolism.  Unless you were fasting
with nothing but water, what you were doing exploited so sort of
metabolic loophole.

> last week it was 1 lb

Step back again.  At 3500 calories that's 500 calories per day.
Perfect.

> this week nothing....

More than anything I think your only problem in unrealistic
expectations.  Everyone would love the time scale for loss to
really be week to week, but it just isn't for most people.  Month
to month.  Don't expect to like it, no one does, but a month with
a loss is not a stall.

> i still would like to at least loose 10 more...

The less you have to lose the slower it goes.  Simple as that.
On Atkins it's expected that the last 10 are supposed to take a
year.  Supposed to as in there's something possibly wrong if
they keep dropping faster.  While you aren't on Atkins that
advice is good.  Relax, you have been successfull and you
continue to be successfull given how little you have to lose.

> My diet consists of cutting out sugar, snacks and eating smaller portions..
> does anyone have any advise of what do i do from here???

Keep at it at the same level.  Allow the last few to take their
time.  If you further cut calories you may need to sustain that
lower amount forever to keep it off.  Do you really want to
reduce your food forever from today's level?  You're already
doing great, so let it run.
