Being accountable: It looks like I've gained almost 2.5 pounds on
vacation. The scale didn't budge between last Wednesday morning and this
morning. (Monday is the official weight) It feels great to be back
cooking my own food and on my regular exercise program. I have to nearly
plead with my sister to have more than one vegetable a day and she
refuses to walk with me. I bought and prepared the veggies and salads
every day and walked (or ran!) by myself at Eleanor Roosevelt's nearby
Val-kill retreat.
It was much better at my best friend's house. We walked a lot and since
I'm coaching her weight loss, we ate really well. I did get my fill of
bacon cheeseburgers elsewhere - an old favorite that still tastes
wunnerful and I've already mentioned the hot fudge sundaes <s>. Adding
to my Changing Tastes, I had grilled tuna and veggies at Outback
Steakhouse that was better than any beef I've had in years.
Call it denial, but I tried on my smallest, tightest jeans and they're
fine so maybe it's not a *real* gain. The first squats I did since
coming back really tired me out but Pilates feels great.
The second best thing I did on vacation was go to my pal's TOPS meeting
with her. They asked me to tell them about my own experience with weight
loss and maintenance. I was armed with a jagundo sized sweatshirt that
was too small for me when I began and hideous *before* pictures. I talked
for perhaps 10 minutes and the women were all very attentive and
supportive. This group has at least three members on maintenance and
there were about 20 women there total. It was a lot of fun and my friend
likes the accountability of the meetings. They seem much like asd in
that they pass along information and support each other. I mentioned our
online group and most of them either thought it was scary or were just
computer resistant. I'm still surprised to encounter these folks.
At the end of the meeting, our own Amy arrived as we had arranged. It's
so much fun to visit in person with our online friends. (I was thinking
of Dally as I drove up and down the Mass Pike!) The reality has never
disappointed me. A bunch of us went to a local eatery afterward and it
was fun to see what people ordered. I don't think any of them had supper
before being weighed at the meeting. Depending how you look at it there
were varying degrees of dedication, celebration or backsliding <g>. I
was happy with a chicken spiedie salad and Amy set a good example with
coffee. We all talked, had a great time and even got home pretty early.
I like TOPS and from what I've seen, would recommend it for anyone
needing group support. It's inexpensive and flexible - a lot like ASD
<s> I was loving my laptop because I was able to somewhat keep up with
everyone here.
Vacation is great - my planets are aligned and I'm spinning in greased
grooves again. It's time to walk now.

This sounds like a wonderful vacation! You'll be walking off those few
added pounds in no time.
I'm sure the ladies at TOPS were impressed with your weight loss story. I
know I am. It's very encouraging to see the results of sticking to a
woe/wol. My mother belonged to TOPS many years ago and lost quite a bit of
weight. Unfortunately she became ill (not from dieting) during this time
and had to discontinue.

Thanks Beverly, I think I'll shake up my routine a little. My lunchtime
walking pal is away this week and the weather is supposed to be dreadful
until Thursday. I'm going to use my treadmill fast and hard for 30
minutes around midday.

The best thing my mom did for me was go to Weight Watchers when I was in
8th grade (iirc). I learned to love vegetables with nothing on them.
You should have seen my face the first time I heard about broccoli with
cheese sauce. Why would anyone do that to some nice broccoli? <s>

I've run into a couple of the women who attended the
meeting that night, and they're *still* talking about
your loss and what an inspiration you are!
I'm kicking myself for not taking pictures, but I was
(am) still out-of-sorts--maybe next time...Oh, and
you'll have to time one of your future visits for the
month of June and get thee to the Owego Strawberry Fest
(thinking of the strawberry thread).

Awww - that's really nice to hear. You know, if just *one* little thing
clicks in somebody's head, it might change everything for them. I know I
changed virtually overnight. Epiphanies happen.

I had my camera with me but was so busy trying to take everything in I
forgot too. Next time for sure. You were great to come out.
I've heard tales of the Owego Strawberry Fest! I just remembered one of
the *tests* my MIL put me through when we were newly married. The
shortcake subject came up and I said how my daddy always had strawberry
shortcake for his birthday - it was a family favorite. She fixed her
steely eyes on me and said "Biscuit or sponge cake?". I looked right
back and said "I never had anything but biscuits?" I passed <g>
I'm CRAVING strawberries now!!!

I guess it's just a case of what makes you more comfortable -- I'm
fine talking in an online group, but I'm horribly shy and would just
die if I had to go to any kind of RL meeting. That's why I'm so glad
I have you guys... :-)

Can you tell I'm an extrovert? <g> I sold Tupperware for several years.
People are almost always polite and nice. Look them in the eye and
smile.
We're happy you're here!

Our gym has a weight loss group that's something like this. I'm not a
regular participant (difficult to schedule) but attended last week
with Elise. It's an hour meeting with roughly 30 minutes of group
idea-sharing and support and roughly another 30 on an educational
topic presented by the gym nutritionist (who's very good, I think).
She also hands out food tracking sheets that members can use, if they
wish, to write down their food intake each day for the week. If they
want to, they can hand them in to her and she will look at them and
write comments to hand back the next week. It seems like a good
concept to me.

Sounds great to me too! With the entire country in a new mode of obesity
awareness, why isn't this part of Phys Ed in school? I might have
acquired some useful knowledge rather than my lifelong disdain for field
hockey.

The University's Wellness program sponsors classes like
this--I attended one of the four-week sessions, and
found it helpful to have someone "critique" my diet and
give me advice on where I could make a few moderate
changes.

I love the option of having the nutritionist review your journal. I guess
we could consider Fitday as our reviewer<g
