It's spring time at the farmers' market and I am up to my eyeballs with
fresh produce!

Today, I picked up the most luscious, sweet, juicy strawberries. I also
bought apricots, shallots, baby greens, goat cheese and a whole striped
bass.

I had an awesome recipe for the goat cheese. I sliced it into discs, dipped
them in egg white, then Panko crumbs (Japanese bread crumbs), spiced with
lots of herbs. And then I grilled them, serving them on a bed of baby greens
tossed with a simple vineagrette. Three of these rounds in a salad and a
bowlful of strawberries made my whole day. :D

The bass I'll braise for dinner and eat with an artichoke and a big salad.

We've been enjoying fresh strawberries for the last two weeks here.  I just
got back from a party where we all ended up bringing some type of strawberry
dessert item.

I've been slicing them and putting them in salad, cottage cheese, or yogurt.
They also taste good in a balsamic vinaigrette.

Mine are just beginning to ripen.  My granddaughter and I were weeding the
vegetable bed yesterday and noticed a few ripe berries in my strawberry
bed.  We took a small break and enjoyed berries straight off the vine :)

You know, I never buy fruit when it's out of season. Sure, I could spend
some bucks and get South American strawberries in the winter, but they taste
terrible. These strawberries taste so wonderful, I can think of few things
that are as good.

That's one of the great things about Whole Foods markets.
We sometimes gets strawberries in winter that taste as great
as the ones we're getting now.

Of course, they're insanely expensive.

Still, it would be nice if they could do the same with
watermelons!  <grin>

Thanks, Laurie. I miss posting them. Things have been rather screwed around
here since I got back from vacation. I finally as if things are getting back
to normal. It's been rough.

I used to pick fresh strawberries when I lived in Mass.  However, we just
don't seem to grow them around these parts.  I have to check out our
farmer's market.

We have a strawberry festival in a neighboring town in early June.  You can
find everything strawberry there - pie, shortcake, donuts.  Even the
fountain in the middle of town turns 'strawberry red' for the event.

In North Brooklin we used to have a Blueberry Festival in August.
Started with blueberry pancakes and went all day.  Infighting at the
community hall dampened our interest.  Now when they're ripe we just walk
the fields and gorge <g>  How perfect is it to have free food along the
road??

My husband says I have to help rake this summer because I ate so many
blueberries this past winter :-/

I Love Blueberries!  I used to live in NY and we had a blackberry bush in
the back yard.  I used to eat a ton of fresh picked berries.  They were
yummy!

Indeed they are!  Raking isn't the hard part - at least you get to move.
But then you have to sit and pick them over to get out the stray leaves,
twigs and varmints before you freeze them.  Honest to God - it's
backbreakingly tedious.

But they are free!

We don't grow too many blueberries around here.  I had a couple plants but
the rabbits ate them :(    They are one of my favorites but I only buy them
in season as they're just too expensive otherwise.  Currently they're about
$5 a pint.  I often buy them frozen for smoothies.  I'm waiting for the
blueberry season to arrive.

I use to know where all the wild blackberry/raspberry patches were when I
was a kid.  We would stop to eat them when we were riding our bikes.
Mother always knew where we had been because of the berry stains on our
hands and clothing.

This IS my definition of Heaven: carrying my bowl of cereal to the
backyard  on a warm summer morning and picking *perfect* raspberries to
put on top.  (it's pretty good to come back from a walk and just sorta
munch them too <s>)

I'll take a picture when they come on.

OH!  I just remembered - putting them on spinach salad!!

That sounds so great.  If this summer weren't overbooked already I'd have
those bikes on the rack and headed to Maine :)

Thanks for reminding me Martha.  I love strawberries and eat lots of
them during the season, but haven't really got going yet this year.  I
generally eat  mine with low fat fromage frais - yummy.
