I went for a bicycle vacation in Europe. After three days of passing
thousands of cyclists and citizens it hit me - no one in this country
is fat. Why? They all ride bicycles! Well, I'm not fat, just a little
tummy and double chin, but I have to tell you after riding 5 hours a
day (at a normal speed) for three weeks I lost it all and looked as
trim and lean as never before! I ate all kinds of stuff - fatty pigs
feet, duck liver, cheeses and sweets of all kinds. Now I know exercise
is important to a diet.

Also, the French seem to have much smaller portion sizes than
Americans. Studies have shown people tend to eat the amount put on
their plates. What I've been doing (when eating out here) is putting
1/2 the food away and out of sight in a container. Exception: my "beer
only" lunch!

And the smaller portion sizes are satisfactory to the French because the
food is real, high fat, and satiates in every way including taste.
(I'm not in France, but my French friend told me).
I certainly agree. Looking back on it now, one of the main reasons I
overate junk food (extremely *empty* calories) was my insatiable search for
taste. Switching to real food, I somehow don't have this drive to overeat.
Who'da thunk?
Recently I had a couple bites of chips, a bite of a donut, and realized,
"Nope, still don't miss it".

Sounds like a great vacation. Did you do this with a tour group or own your
own?

You don't say which country you visited. Europe is made up of a huge
number of separate countries, and each is very different with regard
to culture and cuisine, as well as rates of obesity.
