Hi all.

Got a new problem working with this new software. I was trying to sent a
post through Hotmail to one of the Yahoo MLs that I'm subscribed to, and it
kept bouncing back because Yahoo didn't want to accept anything in HTML. I
somehow managed to turn off the "rich text" so the post would be accepted,
but now I can't find how to turn it back on. Web sites are all washed out,
and graphically benign.

I'm still trying to get to know this Internet Explorer and Outlook Express
stuff, and the transition is NOT going smoothly. Can anyone tell me how to
turn this "rich text" thing back on?

TIA
Smokey

I think you are better off without it.

To my knowledge only Outlook/express can read rich text in emails.

Everyone using another email client or web mail will not be able to read
your mail easily.

Rich text and HTML emails are also much larger in size and slower to
send/recieve then plain text email.

If you send your email in plain text it will get sent/recieved MUCH
faster and everyone will be able to easily read it.

Thanks, but I don't give a damn about the email. Every web site I visit is
just text on a plain, white background. Not even forms show up right. THAT'S
what I'm trying to fix.

I assume you are using Internet Explorer rather than Outlook Express for
your Hotmail access, since changes to Outlook Express would not affect your
web page browsing.

I'm not sure what you did to "turn off" RTF, but let's start here:  From
Internet Explorer, select Tools, Internet Options..., and the Advanced tab.
Click the Restore Defaults button and then close and reopen Internet
Explorer.  If things are not yet improved, select again Tools and Internet
Options..., and then the Security tab.  Click the Default Level button, and
again shut down and restart Internet Explorer.

If this doesn't help yet, get back and we'll figure something else out.

You're right there. This happened while I was composing a ML submission in
the Hotmail Compose New Message window.

> I'm not sure what you did to "turn off" RTF,

Per Hotmail's instructions; In Compose window, click tools and select Rich
Text Editor Off. To restore, open a compose window, click tools and select
Rich text Editor On.

Nope. All that did was reset my home page.

Nope, that didn't work either. I've sent 2 messages to MSN support, but just
like every other faceless corporation, an actual reply, even if it's a form
letter, is doubtful. At least they haven't in the last 48 hours.

OK, I'm getting back. Thanks for your help, and I hate to impose on you for
more, but HELP!!!

Blasted IE. I can't even find how to clear cookies. I want my Netscrape 4.7
back.

If it wasn't for the lack of a hard drive for archival purposes, I would
have switched to WebTV long ago.

I keep hearing that Macs aren't susceptible to crap like this. Can anyone
verify?

I'm definately not an I.E. expert but I can help with the clear cookies.

   Tools
   Internet Options
General Tab - should be buttons to clear cookies and one to delete
temporary internet files

On the same page you might want to check the colors tab - mine has 'use
windows color' checked.
Also check accessibility - mine has nothing checked.  These probably have
nothing to do with your problem but maybe we can walk you through this
option by option<g>

You'll be lucky if they answer at all.

Do you want ALL of your cookies gone completely?  You can go to
Tools/Internet Options and select Delete Cookies and Delete Files buttons
and that will wipe everything out.  If you want to select what to remove,
click Setting, View Files and manually remove the cookies and temp files
you don't want.

Also, clear your history from the Tools/Options tab.  Finally, From that
same tab, click Settings and make sure that the browser isn't rendering
pages automatically.  The correct setting is option 1, every visit to the
page. 9 times out of 10, this process will clear IE display problems.

Absolutely 100% true.  But, you would want an OSX G5 with Safari browser.
Coolest machine on the planet for personal use, hands down.

Smokey,

I need a little more information to fully understand what is happening
to you.

From what I've gathered from your posts.   You were in Internet
Explorer and viewing the web access of Hotmail.   You changed to the
plain text setting to send an email, and after that, you are now
experiencing problems viewing all other websites.

When in the Compose message screen on the hotmail website, you went to
"tools" and turned rich text off.   (that is my default setting when I
use hotmail).

But from then on out, all websites look funny.

The thing is, that setting is not really associated with Internet
Explorer itself.   Heck, if you loaded netscape and went to the same
website you would end up doing the same thing.   That is a website
setting, not a program setting.

This means that you may have accidentally set another setting in
Internet explorer's program.    But you said you've gone thru all the
steps that Jim gave you, and you still see things weird.

If you don't mind, maybe you can email me at my hotmail account and
send me a screen capture of what you see on websites that look so
weird.   I'm just not understanding what you are seeing wrong.
