Man sues Atkins diet promoters

By Jill Barton

PALM BEACH COUNTY CIRCUIT COURT

A West Palm Beach businessman sued
the promoters of the Atkins Diet and
the estate of founder Dr. Robert
Atkins, alleging that the low-carb,
high-fat meal plan clogged his
arteries and threatened his health.

Jody Gorran sued Wednesday in Palm
Beach County Circuit Court. He said
the suit is not about money, noting
he is seeking less than $15,000 in
damages.

Instead, he said he wants the court
to ban Atkins diet books and products
that don't have warning labels about
potential health risks. He said that
he believes one-third of the
population is at risk for developing
health problems when they eat Atkins-
endorsed meats and other foods that
are high in saturated fat.

Gorran, 53, said Thursday he started
the diet in May 2001 because his
weight had risen from 140 to 148
pounds. In two months, he said, his
cholesterol rose from a normal 146 to
an unhealthy 230, and by October
2003, he needed heart angioplasty to
clear arteries.

''I came very close to dying, and
this is from a diet I thought was
marvelous,'' said Gorran.

Atkins Nutritionals said in a
statement that it stands by the
science that has ``repeatedly
reaffirmed the safety and health
benefits of the Atkins Nutritional
Approach.''

The company questioned the motivation
of a Washington-based advocacy group
that helped Gorran with the suit. The
group, the Physicians Committee for
Responsible Medicine, promotes a
vegan diet banning meat, fish, dairy
and egg products.

The group released details of Atkins'
autopsy report in February. Atkins
died in April 2003 after slipping on
an icy sidewalk. The report showed
Atkins, 72, had a history of heart
trouble, including congestive heart
failure and high blood pressure.

The advocacy group said Gorran's suit
is the first to recently question the
merits of the Atkins diet.

In 1979, a New York jury rejected a
woman's lawsuit claiming the Atkins
Diet caused her heart disease.

If you're going to sue over claiming to do a plan, it helps to
actually follow the directions so your suit would have merit.

And if you're going to criticize someone for filing such a suit, it
also helps to read the complaint before shooting off your mouth.  So
let me suggest that you put down the bag of pork rinds, wipe your
hands, don your pince-nez and start squinting at the print.

You might also let out your 51" belt a few notches so when you get set
for your Atkins snack of a  five-pound bunless burger, you don't vomit
it back out.

I did, did you? If so, you apparently need help with your reading
comprehension. Remember, "Reading is FUNdemental".

Hey kids, Junior is trying to flame! Let's all sit back and watch;
someone get the camera, this should be funny.

Gee, who would have guessed that a "diet" which promotes eating as
much bacon and red meat as you want would be unhealthy?

These morons and every one of you who buy into this "diet" deserve
what they get.

However, this does not mean the program gives you license to
stuff yourself with multiple well marbled steaks or down a pound
  of cheese at a sitting

Whatever may or may not be true about Atkins, they don't promote
overeating anything.

What diet does that?  Hint, Atkins does not.

Do try to come across as other than an ignorant moron yourself
some time.  You know, read the book so you actually know what
you're talking about.

By the way, the guy suing didn't follow the directions.

In general, it promotes a high-fat, low-carb diet.  You're asking for
a heart attack if you follow any of those low carb diets.  You've all
been hoodwinked.

Oh, I know what it says.  Good luck when you stop the program.  You'll
be so carb sensitive that you'll balloon up.   Good luck also with the
increased kidney problem from all the excess protein you're eating and
the increased chances of heart disease, cancer and osteoporosis.  But
hey, if you want to kill yourself, that's your business.

> By the way, the guy suing didn't follow the directions.

Whether he did or not, I don't think he should have a case anyway.

A little education for you folks

Correct but you have changed the topic.  It forbids over eating so
the high-fat aspect is relative to total calories eaten not high
in amount eaten.

> You're asking for

Incorrect in point of fact.  Dr Atkins originally designed the
plan to improve the health of his heart patients and when they
lost wait he was surprised and started to research why.

> Good luck when you stop the program.

Going on five years now.  I am well aware that if I quit it
doesn't matter what plan I quit I will regain it all.

> You'll be so carb sensitive that you'll balloon up.

Name any plan that allows loss to be kept off once you quit.
Go ahead, I'm waiting.  It's simple cause and effect.  The
greatest advantage low carbing has is it triggers no hunger
so there are no physical forces pushing you off.  The peer
pressure aspects remain but that true of all plans.

Don't let the facts get in your way.  I'm far more healthy now,
as are most low carbers.  BTW, where did you dream up that false
"excess protein" stuff?

Personal responsibility.  Check.

Good to know I actually lost 35 pounds of water.  Gotcha.  There
is a mixture of good material and stuff by folks who have no idea
what Atkins is on that web page.
