MP3 players for workouts

I've decided I'm finally going to get a good MP3 player for when I'm
working out.    My stupid CD player which is supposed to be jogger
proof w/ the 45sec antiskip - hell I can't even walk without it
skipping.   Its too friggen annoying.   And on nights like last night
where I was doing stuff for about 3 hrs, (bike to gym, workout, bike
home, walk dog), it gets tireing listening to the same cd 3 or 4 times
over and over.   I like variety in music.

So, I started looking online and fell in love with the Rio Karma, a 20
gig MP3 with lots of cool features.    But then I read some more about
HD based MP3 players and that they really aren't good for
athletes/sports type people, because of the HD has "moving parts" and
can skip, cause damage, etc if its jostled too much.

So, then I started looking into Flash based.   I'm bummed, as I loved
the idea of having my entire music collection on one unit.   And going
to a 256 meg unit was kinda disheartening.   But I kinda like the Rio
Cali.   Of all the MP3, it seems to get good ratings from the "sporty"
types.

I was just wondering if anyone here has any comments or input they'd
like to add when it comes to purchasing MP3 players with the intent
that it will be used during workouts.

No thoughts, but let me know when/if you can find an MP3 player with a
built in FM radio and preferably with everything in headphones
(nothing attaching to the belt).

256 meg is about 4 hours of music, not so bad.

the rio cali has fm tuner, as well as lap and stopwatch features.  But
its not built into the headphones.   (I personally wouldn't buy one
like that anyway).   It does come with the arm sports band and the
sports belt clip.    For me, I'll probably switch between a belt clip
or arm band.   I prefer my own headphones that are earbuds w/ ear
clips so that I don't have plastic going over or around my head, and I
just have the wire.   But that's a personal preference.

Thanks. I have been  putting off purchase of such things because it
seems that they all lack necessary features.

By the way, I would expect the head to bear the least amount of shock
from walking/running... Not that it matters for solid state
devices... But it could matter for hard drive based players.

They have compactflash sized hard disks... Google for microdrive.

The Rio Cali sounds like the one I bought to replace my old one that died.
Does it have a round four-way toggle button in the center and the top
position is pause/play?  I wear mine in a little bag that I wear like a
necklace and have had a few problems walking and jogging with it  because it
bounces against the side of the bag and pauses itself.  The clip broke off
of the little holder that you attach to the armband so I can't use mine that
way.  I found that it bothered me too much on the arm anyway.

I have a Rio Sport for walking and the occasional jog:

But at only 64 meg (upgrades to 192 meg with MMC cards), I don't think
that's enough memory for you. Still, I like Rio, which is why I mention
it...

I *love* my Toshiba one -- with a 256 MB chip I picked up inexpensively off Amazon.
It's rather old (2-3 yrs?) so I'm sure the new models are better -- but I am crazy
about it and it's really great for exercising. But I do need to get a recharger unit
that will recharge AAA batteries as well as AA -- the battery doesn't last very long
at all (6-8 hrs?). You will love how light they are -- mine is about 2 inches square
and you can't even tell you have it on.

I have a rio sport 128 megs.  I bought an expansion card and have a total of
256.  It holds 60-70 songs and is easy to use.  It comes with an arm band
and I LOVE it.  I've banged it at the gym by accident and dropped it a few
times and it still works perfect.

I have a Memorex with 128 MB & FM tuner.  It's been through a lot of sweat
and pounding and hasn't had a problem yet.  I use the armband most of the
time.  It was less than $100.

Hi jayjay,

I'm not sure it'll hold up to lots of rough stuff, but I wanted to plug
my beloved 15 gig iPod.  It has all my music on it and <knockonwood> has
survived over a year already.  I only run a little bit but it never
skips.  Previously I had a Nomad Jukebox which just up and quit one day
in my CAR! never dropped, shaken or stirred - I didn't even run then!

When I ponied up for the iPod I vowed I'd never spend a lot on another. I
have a cd player that would be just fine, although I have the same desire
for *lots* of music.
