It's been a year since I started dieting

It's been a year since I started dieting June 1 2003. Also a year
without sweets, candy, sugar and junk food in packages. I lost 50 lbs
since then.

I have not had a single heartburn in the whole year

Also not a single instance of cold.

My blood pressure is about 127/70 now, instead of 145/85 or so.

I can now do 12 very clean pullups and 39 pushups.

This was the happiest year in a long time for me. Somehow feeling good
physically translates into the feeling of happiness for me.

As you accelerate your food, it takes exponentially more and more energy
to increase its velocity, until you hit a limit at C.  This energy has
to come from somewhere; in this case, from the food's nutritional value.

Hello Iggy,

Congrats on the excellent weightloss maintenance and the payoff is great
too with the healthier lifestyle and all.  Keep on working on more pull-ups
and pushups.  I hope to be able to post soon, reaching my goal but it's
getting harder the closer I get, but I'm sure I'll make one day.

Thanks, I am sure you will make it.

What's the marine corps standard for pushups and pullups?

Wow, you are a mere shadow of your former self!  How do you feel?  How are
you doing?!  Over 170 lbs lost... amazing.

Hey! I'm doing awsome. I hope you are the same. As for the way I feel.
It is all surreal.I'm still in shock mode I think. I am finding it
harder being in maintenance than I thought it would be. The cravings
are
worse now than they ever were while in losing mode. And I tend to want
to make us reasons why I cant workout sometimes. In the end though I
buck up and prevail. I went on a 2 day binge a few weeks back and that
scared the sh.t out of me. I slapped myself in the butt and got right
back on track. Its funny how not in control I can still find myself
even
after all I have learned and accomplished. I am ok as long as I dont
let
myself get bored. I go into total binge mode if I get bored. Sooooo I
have taken up a second job helping out at an old family friends farm.
The work is hard and the pay sucks. But it keeps me occupied. :) ... I
hope you and yours are all doing great... peace and huggs (((( )))).

it is still surreal to me. I still cannot believe that I am thin and
fit like I pretty much never had been before.

I find mine to be about as hard as it was when I was  losing weight --
same workouts, same food quantity, and no room for overeating.

cravings for what? Is maybe something missing in your diet?

Heh, sorry, I didn't notice this had been crossposted! ASD readers have
heard my history, so I didn't mention that the first 24 pounds were lost
due to uncontrolled diabetes, not diet. I'm not proud of that, but I'm
very proud of the last 19 pounds, which I've worked to get off. But I've
still got such a long way to go, that 43 pounds doesn't seem like much;
though as I said, I feel a lot better.

*AND* I'm happy to report, that my A1C (3 month average blood glucose)
has dropped from a scary 9.1 in February to a normal 5.1 in May (just
got my test report back)! That might have something to do with why I
feel so much better... ;-)

That could be!

As far as I understand, the holy grail of diabetes management is blood
sugar control. Much easier to do when you are a little hungry all the
time and have glycogen reserves to fill...

It's great that you can control your diabetes with
diet... Congratulations!

No, that's not so, I also had to limit how much  I eat, mostly but not
only reducing junk carbs. I limit my portions, otherwise I gain. Also
Iexercise quite a bit, walk 100 minutes per day.

Congrats Ig.

Being at a lower weight has always made it easier for me to exercise and
remain active.  When I put a few pounds back on my energy level seems to
drop.

For me, overeating makes me instantly feel bad. There were a few
instances when I overate, and I always felt bad, like a sack of sh.t,
afterwards. Which is pretty close to how I felt when I was fat.

To be honest, I am proud but not terribly so, as losing weight was not
incredibly difficult. It took time and effort etc, but not incredible
inner struggle of any sort. I simply realized that there was no
alternative, sort of. Like brushing teeth, we do it because we have

Congratulations, Igor.

Time will pass whether we decide to lose weight or not.  I decided I
wasn't going to be fat anymore and then made it happen.  Now time still
passes and we're so much healthier.  I was never unhappy - sure, I didn't
like the way I looked much but I was very happy.  That's probably why I
didn't start sooner - but also why it turned out to be fairly easy for
me.

I was also very happy before.  Every now and again someone will ask me
something like, "Aren't you so much happier now that you've lost
weight?" or "Don't you feel so much better now that you've lost
weight?".  I will just answer something like, "Not really.  I felt
fine before."  I mean, I'm glad I've lost weight, and it has improved
some things about my life, but I didn't seem to have nearly the angst
about being overweight that people expect me to have had, I guess.

Yes, it is. But even getting rid of heartburn (I had it 2-3 times per
week) is worth the half effort.

I used simple baking soda. Do you ever get heartburn now?

I know the question was to Laurie but I have not had indigestion since I
started my WOE and I was one of those folks on every over the counter
antacid and even Rx acid reducers. Not one single time In almost a year
(June 15 is my 1 yr anniversary for my WOE) This factor ALONE will keep
me from going back to my old way of eating. I don't know if it was what,
or how much or in what combo I was eating, or lack of
exercise.....doesn't matter.. I will never suffer the pain of that again
like I did for years. What an absolute gift I gave myself when I changed
whatever it was that caused it.

Same here! I do not know if this is due to eating less, or not eating
late in the evening, or what, but not having heartburn is very
precious.

Me too, I suffer from heartburn/acid reflux which I know is due to
overeating plain and simple - what I eat doesn't really make a
difference.  I guess it's quite possible I have a hiatal hernia after
all these years of stuffing myself full.  Even now, though, it stops
within days of starting a healthier (and smaller) WOE.

I eat much more food, volume wise, than I did when I was obese.

And yet, I do not suffer from heartburn anymore.

Even when I overeat of calorie dense food, I do not have heartburn.

I read a tidbit in Dr. Bernstein's diabetes book that heartburn could
be a signal of unstable blood sugars. I wonder if slimming down and
normalizing my blood sugars could be responsible for my own lack of
heartburn now.

Never - even when I was on vacation and had some deep fried onions that
were much fattier than I'm used to now.  I think it's because I just don't
stuff myself anymore.

Could it be because you do not have as much "visceral fat"?

Nice going! Do you feel positive changes in things like number of new
ideas, creativity, etc?

No, it is about same as before... At least subjectively.

You just feel better because people can't call you fat anymore, right?  Now,
you can be "superior!" Oh boy! :)

Hi there, Congrats! Have you ever tried a balance ball? (I believe
that is the true name for it) to use for not only situps, but I lay
across it to do pushups! I am up to 100 - 4 sets of 25. Let me know.

You and I started this journey to better health together last year, and
I have watched you post here(ASD) on a daily basis and vice versa.

First of all... Well done. I'm very pleased/proud for you to have made
it thus far on what is going to be a lifetime commitment for you.

Secondly, for all your hard-headedness about many subjects over the last
year - your 2 dimensional view of losing weight/dieting/improving health
etc... If nothing else, it forces us all to attempt to see things from
your perspective. Thanks for the diversity.

Thanks. It is kind of weighty to feel that t is a lifetime commitment.

Kind of what I was hoping for... And you lost much more than I did!

It tells me that there is more than one way to skin a cat (not that I'd ever
try to or want to skin a cat).  It also highlights the old saying "Do what
works for you!"
