Thanks!

curt - 03 Jun 2004 17:02 GMT Nitrate free bacon, organic salad? I wish I had one here. We have Whole Foods, but I think Trader Joes is cheaper.

They also have a wonderful artichoke salsa that is 2 carbs per 2 tablespoons (maybe not exactly low carb). I don't use it for chips, though. I use it on burgers, chicken, etc., as a condiment. Plus, if you are a chocolate fiend, they have a pretty good selection of dark chocolate that is pretty high in cocoa content. (I KNOW! "Chocolate is not low carb." But if you really think you need chocolate, it's better to eat a small piece of higher percentage cocoa chocolate than to eat just any old chocolate.)

When I really think I need chocolate, I eat "unsweetened chocolate baking squares"... The last one was in March or so...

Lady o' the house - 03 Jun 2004 18:58 GMT If you like slightly spicy foods, you'll really like the salsa. The last time I had some, it was hotter than I remember it. But it was ohhh, so-o-o tasty.
As far as eating unsweetened baking chocolate, doesn't that make your mouth kind of pucker up? I made my own dark chocolate by melting Bakers Chocolate and mixing a couple of packets of Splenda in it.

But, whenever I eat it, I gain 0.5 lbs per ounce eaten.

There is very little carbs in it, 90% of calories come from fat.

Oh yeahh, I love their 70% 1.5 lb dark chocolate bar in the red wrapper. I tried others like Lindt's 75% and 85% Execellence line of bars but I find myself going back to TJ's, which is much cheaper too. And I've heard the higher content cocoa means less sugar than regular milk chocolate bars, metabolizes faster and has antioxidants that are good for you as well. And it puts me in a happy mood too. I know I've been eating A LOT of it lately and it hasn't had much impact on my weight.
Other things I like at TJ's is their yogurt garlic and chives dip, frozen cod sticks and selection of nuts and cheeses.

Chris Braun - 04 Jun 2004 01:24 GMT I like their More & Less cereal -- hi protein, low carb, and tasty. There are also some good frozen salmon entrees, salmon burgers, and various frozen vegetarian entrees. And I buy their mint meringues -- pure sugar, but not a lot of it -- just 18 calories per cookie.

Their prices are extremely reasonable and there's a wide selection. Also you might pick up some of the Bob's Red Mill flax meal and oat bran. I mix them together with some protein powder, coconut, and cinnamon and make a great, cheap, hot cereal.
I don't particularly like those of their sauces I've tried. I also have gotten burned a couple times by them on products that are past dates. Look at the sell-by date on anything you buy that has one.

Also olives, reeking of urine and quite foul tasting. I guess they are supposed to be this way, but I do not like that.

I need to go there tonight to get my frozen broccoli and green beans (both cheap and great !), macadamias, almonds (great prices), butter, eggs (dairy is SO much cheaper there), coffee, and I'm sure there will be more. I am always amazed at the low total cost. Gotta Love It.

Rainbow-Seeker - 04 Jun 2004 06:47 GMT I've never heard of "Trader Joe". Where is it located? Is it a national chain in the U.S., or just in one state? You all have my interest up now.

I have to make pilgrimages twice a year as I drive through MA on my way to NY. Gives me time to dream.
This probably isn't appropriate but at Christmastime, they sell Ghirardelli's chocolate in 10 pound bars for $20. I break it with a hammer and freeze it to use all year. <drool>

Normally specialty shops has high prices but theirs are very reasonable. I didn't pick up any thing that required refrigeration as I wasn't planning on returning home immediately. I did stock up on some of their cereal for my daughter, Arizona diet green tea and a few other items I can't find in my regular grocery. I'll definitely be making more trips as it's not too far from work.

It's an awesome specialty grocery, where prices mostly aren't typical of specialty stores.

Are these things an East or West Coast phenomenon? I live in the midwest, have been to Texas, Louisiana, and Colorado recently, and haven't seen one there.
I'm just curious.
