What is my daily caloric requirement?sytech@yahoo.com
I'm a 56 year old male, 6"2'2" and about 208 lbs.
I work out 6 days a week ( 4 days 1 hr aerobic, 2 days 1 hr,. weights,
and 30 minutes of aerobic training.
I work from home so a lot of the rest of the day isnvolves sitting at
my desk or waklking around the house.
I have seen various caloric calculators which claim to tell you what
your daily caloric requirements are but they have huge variations. Can
anyone give me a "general" idea of what mine might be?
Thanks,
Sy

Try to think about it rationally. A "general idea" would necessarily
involve variation! Your calculators already do give you a "general
idea". There is a reason for that variation in calculators, that's
because different people of the same weight and build and height have
different energy expenditures and not all digest the same food with
the same efficiency.
It is not hard to find out your personal requirements very
precisely. Record your weight at the beginning of the week, eat
normally for the whole week, write everything down (use fitday.com),
record your weight at the end of the week, and after a few arithmetics
operations you have your daily caloric requirement!
Now, if you want a general idea, your calorie requirements are
probably 2200-2800 calories to maintain weight.

The Harris-Benedict formula is one of the more commonly used metabolic rate
calculators (I've included it in my recently released WeightWare program).
Assuming your are "Moderately Active - Moderate exercise/sports 3-5 times
per week", it predicts you would require 2,972 calories per day to maintain
your current weight.
At the higher level of "Very Active - hard exercise/sports 6-7 days per
week", it predicts you would need 3,308 calories per day.
However, these are ballpark estimates only.

any calculator is going to give you an estimate...a "general" idea. you
have to take what it gives you and make slight adjustments. for
instance, if you try this, and you lose 1 pound in a week, it's about 500
calories too low. if you try it and you gain 1 lb in a week, its about
500 calories too high.
good luck

Thanks for the link.
Can you explain the difference between the "BMR calories" and the
"Activity calories"?
Thanks

"bmr" is basal (resting) metabolic rate. "activity" is number of calories
you burn throughout the day *beyond* resting.
so, if your bmr is 2500 and your activity is 500, your amr (active
metabolic rate) is 3000.
theres a better explanation of this on http://veganfitness.proboards20.com/
look under the dieting or bulking faq.
you dont need to be vegan or vegetarian to read it or post. im not. but
the guy who runs it does a nice job of explaining the sceince and its a
very polite/friendly site. he has another site too, but this one is the
new one.

Are you getting heavier? Then your caloric requirement is less than
what you're eating. Are you getting lighter? Then it's more. Is your
weight stable? Then you have it just right.
