Its been four days since my doctors visit where I found out I am a diabetic.

One day of just being numb, followed by one day of not wanting to think
about it, then one day gathering information, followed by one day of sifting
through everything.  Now, the fifth day, I'm realizing I've probably gotten
off lightly and the diabetes diagnosis is my impetus for getting to a
healthy weight and healthy eating habits.  For life.

I'm realizing my numbers aren't all that bad.  I had an HGBA1C of 6.1%,
that's high; normal range is 4.9%-5.8%.  But my random glucose was a normal
of 93 (normal range is 60-159).  I'm sure others in ASD are more
knowledgeable about these numbers than I.  My doctor said I had controlled
the disease by losing the weight, and with no medications I need to take and
no monitoring of my blood glucose I guess I am controlling it.  Knock on
wood.  I go back to the doctor for another look in six months.

The only dietary change I'm thinking I'll need to make is to eat more often,
evenly spacing out the carbs I eat so my blood sugar doesn't spike.  And
keep to a recommended balance of fats, proteins, and carbs.  That I can do.
I have a class with a diabetic nutritionalist next month, so I may get some
more specific guidance then.

So, heaving a big sigh, today is Day 1 of Phase 2, and I'm commemorating it
with a new weight goal:  175 is midway in the healthy range for my height,
and that's what I'm shooting for.  That means today I start a new diet, new
starting weight of 212, currently 212, new goal of 175.  37 pounds away!
Took me 18 weeks and 4 days to lose that much starting in January, I guess I
can race myself!

Thanks to all who responded kindly with sympathy, comforting words, and
prayers.  Chris, Rosie, Susan, Jenn, Laurie, Beverly, Ig, Perple Gyrl, Ally,
J.J.(the one in WA), and Kasey;  You made me feel better and helped a LOT.
You were wonderful.

Or maybe she's kill-filed me.  I recall a woman who kept posting old
usenet jokes here had me kill-filed because of my profanity.

Dally, not known IRL for her profanity  :-)

Dewolla, I am glad that things are looking up for you. It is not the
end of the world and your bha1c is really good. So you probably are
not in a terrible shape. Just a couple of things, if you do not
mind. One is a recommendation for a book called Dr. Bernstein's
Diabetes Solution.

Another is a word of caution that for many people, dieting down to
very slim weights is very difficult and make sure that when you reach
normal weight, you proceed slowly.

Also, it is by far not obvious that a diet high in carbs is suitable
for diabetics. It appears to me quite strongly that the ADA
recommendations for diabetics were not made with much thought or
evidence. Please read up on it a little bit.
