The talk about minimum number of calories burned via exercise got me
thinking, how accurate is fitday's exercise calculation? Is there a
site I should be using? I feel like I am actually burning more
calories weekly than fitday calculates for me. If there is a manual
calculation, I would be happy to do that as well.

I walk at a very brisk pace (3.5-4 mph) 3 miles, 5-6 days per week,
mow the lawn with a push mower (hilly yard) 1/2 hour 1 day/week, an
elliptical at  least 10 mins per day 7 days a week, calisthenics 5-10
mins per day, swimming at least 30 laps (approx 25 meter pool length)
with assorted styles (crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke) 2-3 days per
week, pilates/yoga 20 mins 3 times per week, general gardening every
day for 30 minutes including heavy weight bearing (I tote 10 Gal full
water buckets for about 15 mins up and down stairs and around the
yard). I figured on fitday approx 2100 calories. Is that true? If so,
I guess I need to fit in more exercise somewhere to hit the minimum of
2800 exercise cals/week

TIA!

www.caloriesperhour.com     is a good site for calculating calories burned.

That sounds about right to me, but all of those calculators are merely
estimates.  The point is, most forms of exercise, while important for weight
loss and health, burn a depressingly low number of calories.  That's why
diet and portion control generally contribute more to weight loss than
exercise.

It sounds like you have a pretty good exercise program going already.  It
would probably be better to stick with that (assuming you're losing weight)
than stress over fitting in more exercise.  You might, however, look into
some alternative forms of exercise that burn calories more quickly (e.g.,
running and cycling). But, those higher intensity exercises can also cause
more injuries if you're not careful.

Anyway, don't stress over the exact calories burned number - your weight
will tell you if your diet and exercise program is successful.

Well, Thanks for the caloriesperhour.com suggestion. I plugged in my
activity and I found a huge discrepency between fitday and that site.
A difference of over 1500 calories! I split the difference and it
looks like I'm doing 2870 cals of exercise per week.

I am losing at a decent pace and I'm counting calories, so I wasn't
terribly worried about it, I just noticed it mentioned earlier this
week and it got me thinking about minimum amounts of exercise, etc.

That's something I love about this ng -- making me think about things
I never considered in relation to permanent changes in my WOL.

Thanks!
