Hi

I have been on a diet for about 2 weeks now, which basically consists of one
meal per day, and lots of fruit. I have two questions if some of you don't
mind answering :-

1 - Can you eat too much fruit per day? ( I usually only eat apples,
oranges, tangerines and banana's )

2 - Does it matter if you take lots of fruit at the one time? For example, I
can come in from work at 2:30 in the afternoon, have a small diner, and
later on ( about 7pm ) I would take 2 oranges, 2 apples a banana and a
tangerine. Is that too much at the one time or am I better spacing the fruit
out, or does it not matter with fruit?

Thanks for all your help.

Yes, surely you can eat too much fruit.

If you really overdo fruits like apples, you can become quite
flatulent!

What is your reason to go on a specific diet like yours?

Why is that? I thought fruit was good for you?

I am really overweight, and I think this is the best way to do it. I have
cut down my eating by 1/3, approx.

I agree that fruits are good things. I eat one apple per day. But, too
much of a good thing can be a bad thing...

I is not that hard to get too many calories from fruits. 15 bananas
per day and two avocados, for example, is not that much food for a
whole day, would be approximately 3600 calories.

Also, fruits are high in sugar and carbs, and for many fat people,
eating too much carbs makes their blood glucose fluctuate, causing
moments of extreme hunger and food cravings.

If you are fat and abused junk food/ice cream/bread/pasta a lot, yo-yo
dieted etc, you are likely to be such a person.

To find it out for sure would be easy, as I said in another post, just
buy a blood glucose monitor at walmart for $8 and some test strips,
and test yourself. Read up on it a little bit.

What's your weight and height?

If you see that it does not work for you, do not be too surprised and
do not give up your dieting. Make some sane changes.

Do you exercise now? If you add a lot of walking, for example, you
would handle that sugar in fruits a bit better, according to some
dieting authorities.

How long have you been on your diet?

Too much of anything is not good for you.  You need calories but too many
are bad for you.

You need exercise to be healthy.  You are probably starving yourself on only
one meal a day and making up the calories with only fruit is also unhealthy
because it almost guarantees that you will miss out on some nutrients.

Eat a wide variety of food, with limitations on fat and refined sugar which
provide little nutrition.  Control how many portions you eat and the size of
portions.  And exercise up to 30 minutes a day.

I would never tell anyone that their diet is "wrong" if it works for them
(and doesn't kill them along the way).

It is my personal belief, however, that one meal a day is not healthy.  And
fruit, while loaded with nutriments and fiber, and generally low in
calories, is unfortunately also rather high in sugar.  And with one meal a
day, you're taking your blood sugar levels on a roller-coaster ride.  Some
consider that important, others may not.  I'm not the authority on that.

I would be sure to take multivitamin supplements if I were going to continue
that diet, at least.

Actually, it is very easy to find out if one is subject to a "sugar
roller coaster ride". Simply go to walmart and buy a cheap ReliOn
blood glucose monitor and a few strips, and then take a few samples
throughout a few days. Total cost is going to be around $30, which is a
small sum to pay for being able to make important decisions without
second guessing.

Along with what others have said, I'd note that your diet may be
inadequate in protein and fat.  You need a balance of protein, fat,
and carbs in your diet, and fruit is essentially just carbs.

Has anyone referred you to www.fitday.com?  This site will let you
track your eating and see how many calories and other nutrients you're
consuming.  You also need to look at your calorie intake (as others
have noted) and see that it's in a range that will allow a steady but
safe weight loss (generally 1-2 lbs. per week).
