Before I started dieting, I used to eat a lot of meals with rice (chicken
stir fry etc).
I was looking on weightlossresources.co.uk and there are so many differences
between rice! Basmati has 41.2% fat, whereas American Long Grain has 2.7%!
Also it seems that it has a lot of calories... Long Grain has 350 ish
calories per 100g!
So is rice something to avoid? Are there any low calorie rices? (I'm in the
UK).
Thanks a lot,
Rachel.

you probably looked up information on some specific cooked dish with
basmati that has some fat as ingredient.

any carbs have 4 calories per gram. Rice is mostly carbs.

If you cut down on foods, the good foods to cut down on are, sweets,
snack foods (junk food), and white rice and white flour. The reason
for it is that when you are dieting, you are eating little anyway, so
if you eat those foods, you displace something else that could contain
more nutrients. Lack of those nutrients may make you crave stuff.
But remember, people lose weight on very weird diets if they have a
lot of willpower. For a normal person with not too much willpower,
being careful about what one eats, helps.

I haven't had a bite of rice in a year. To me its filler, nothing more.
It's calorie/carb dense..nutritionally poor. I have thought about adding
it back into my WOE once I get to maintenance but I will research it in
depth when I get to that point. I *have* to have the most nutritional
bang for my calorie buck, I can't waste my allotted calories on anything
less. YMMV.

If you like rice, try natural brown rice or even brown basmati. Wild rice
is also very good if it is available in your area - it's a staple here
(grown and harvested locally). White rice is processed and has most of the
healthy fiber stripped away. Just be careful with portion sizes because
like pasta it's very easy to overeat. I'd worry less about the fat content
of the rice and look more at the fiber content. Higher fiber means slower
to digest (lower GI impact) and more filling.
I also avoid cooking mine with butter, but I do use some homemade vegetable
stock to flavor it if it isn't part of a recipe.

Rice is a tricky thing... me, I like it, so I'm somewhat inclined to
eat too much of it. Therefore, I don't fix it too often.
When I do eat rice, I eat brown rice... at least you get a little
extra fiber that way. Personally, I prefer the taste of brown rice to
white anyway. Wild rice is also good!
If you really like it, then just be sure to watch portion sizes... it
does pack calories!
Barley can make a nice substitute. It's better on the glycemic index,
and my husband is diabetic... so I fix barley more often than rice.

Actually, as odd as this may sound, getting rice cooker helped me with
that. Since the rice cooker has a Keep Warm setting, I dish the rice
out from there with a measuring cup. I measure out my serving and close
the lid and then I am done. I guess not having it stare at me (from a
serving bowl) helps. It also make rice a lot better than I could and it
removes the whole timing issue from preparation (get home, start rice,
do dinner whenever). We have rice about once a week.

I steam mine in a black and decker steamer. Works great... and I
basically dish out what I'm planning to eat and then put it away. It
does make it easier.

What is the nutrient value? For example, brown rice has fiber.

Rachel, I don't quite understand where your figures come from. I'm
also in the UK and I subscribe to WLR, so I had a look for myself and
couldn't find any brand of Basmati rice that had more than around 1%
fat - perhaps you were looking at some made up dish rather than the
basic rice?
I eat rice sometimes, and like all other foods I just build it into my
calorie allowance. I eat around 300-400 + unlimited low calorie veg
for my evening meal main course, so if I have rice I don't have
anything else with it apart from "free" veg. I do the same with cous
cous or pasta.
