Workout Wipe Out

After two weeks on prednisone for poison ivy and a slight gain in weight I
returned to the gym last night.  The poison ivy has disappeared enough that
I don't think many people will notice the few remaining red patches on my
arms.

The workout started off just fine but about 15 minutes into it I began to
feel terrible.  I should have quit and gone home but decided to push through
it.  What a mistake.  By the time I finished I had really bonked.  It was
all I could do to drive myself home.  Taking a shower was a huge effort.  I
could barely lift my arms to shampoo my hair.    I'm not sure what caused
this as I have been eating properly and had ate dinner about an hour before
going to the gym.  Any suggestions on what to eat to avoid this in the
future?

This morning I still feel a little weak but at least the scale gave me a
nice surprise.  I'm back to my weight before starting the medication -
148.5.  It was discouraging to see the scale creep up while I was on the
medication.  Some of the side effects are water retention and increased
appetite.  I was able to control the appetite except for a couple of days
when I ate anything and everything in sight.  At least I stuck with healthy
food while I was overstuffing myself.

Now it's time to get back to my regular WOE/WOL.  I'll probably skip the gym
tonight and just go for a bike ride around the neighborhood if the weather
cooperates.  I doubt I'll go back to the gym until Sunday.

Most likely a residual affect of the prednisone.

This here kinda goes along with the theory.   From what it sounds
like, you were dehydrated which lead to the bonk, exhaustion as well
as the weight loss.

When did you stop the prednisone?    It could be that your workout and
everything just released the water retention and your body just
couldn't handle it all that well.

My experience when I was on prednisone (for cancer) was that going off it
only made a difference because my moods crashed.  The prednisone interrupted
my daily cycle, shall we say, and I couldn't eat prunes which would have
fixed things because I was also on procarbazine, and eating prunes could
have given me a cerebral hemorrhage.  But walking has the same effect on me
as prunes and that was what I did, so I didn't notice any difference after
finishing the prednisone.  So that is why I wondered if Bev had exercised at
all in the meantime.

I just finished the medication Monday.  I sure hope it was the medication as
I don't want to go through this again<g>

Are you sure it's a food thing?  Were you doing any kind of exercise in the
meantime?  If not, I would have thought it was just not having exercised in
a while.

I had stayed away from the gym for the past couple weeks as I didn't think
they would appreciate me working out with poison ivy all over my face and
arms<g>  I had done some bike riding and one ride was quite a workout.  I'm
hoping it was the medication.  I'll also not make the mistake of continuing
if I begin to feel this way again.  I probably would have been okay if I had
been smart and just quit when I started feeling bad.

the 2 week break form the gym could have also played a roll.
Combined w/ the meds and everything it probably just escalated the
problem.   Also, how was your sodium to water intake that day?
There's the whole electrolyte issue, and I'm not sure if the pred or
the release of the water retention might have caused an imbalance in
your system for the day.

Do you recall if you had to go to the bathroom alot over the past
couple days?   (signal of releasing the water retention).

When are you going to workout again - keep us posted on that outcome.

speaking of - must log of and stop reading so I can go get my workout
in.

You'll be back in the swing of things in no time!  It took me about a week
of working our regularly after my 2 weeks off to not be totally wiped out by
the experienc.
