While walking on a Rails-to-Trails in New York last month, I became
enchanted watching folks on rollerblades. Since I can ice skate (sort
of) I figured I could rollerblade and resolved to hunt the yardsales for
some this summer. Last week my favorite salvage store had a huge load
from a sporting goods place in Florida that had a small fire. I found a
pair that fit me, in my cheapskate (ha ha) price range and tried them in
the aisle of the store even though they were still tied together. I left
the sooty box there.
This morning I borrowed my neighbor's 6th grader with his own skates and
we went down to the little grade school and did laps around the circular
bus driveway. What a BLAST!!!! We were there about an hour. I fell 3
times - always while going much too slowly - but got right back up and
rolled on.
I may be a little sore tomorrow (still did my 4.5 mile walk after supper)
but I'm declaring victory. I have another way to exercise and have fun
at the same time. I'll keep them in my van so I can take any opportunity
to do it again.
I can't wait!!

Cool! I've always thought that roller blading looked like fun! I
used to ice skate almost every day when I was in college and for a few
years afterward, but haven't done it in a very long time.

HEY! dammit - why didn't they salvage that stuff in florida so I could
take advantage of the savings. :) Not the opposite end of the spectrum
way up yonder in Maine... :)
Sounds like you had alot of fun, and good for you for doing it. Hope you
wear your safety gear.

They most likely didn't want to be competing against themselves?
I already had knee & elbow pads for ice skating. I'm getting wrist
thingies today - each time I fell yesterday I landed right on the heel of
my hand.
OH! I seem to have come through it without any after effects. Last
night I thought maybe my neck would hurt this morning but I just did my
long Pilates tape and feel like a million bucks!
Next weekend I'll rollerblade with my 2 little nieces in NY - they are
very excited and so am I!
WHY did I wait so long to become healthy????

What a great idea getting the 6th grader! I would love to learn to roller
blade but I'm afraid hehe

I have a natural aversion to young'uns in general but Henry is a special
kid. When I asked him to show me how to skate he actually seemed
flattered. As I dropped him off afterward he thanked me for taking him
along. There's some kind of indoor rink in Bangor - we may have to make
a pilgrimage.

WTG! They are a lot of fun.
I started rollerblading when I was in my mid 50's. After a couple years I
decided to trade them in for a pair of the old fashioned 4 wheel type. I
had never been very good at ice skating and still had problems with my
ankles so the 4 wheel feel much better on the ankles. I haven't had them
out for a couple years. My doctor cringes when I talk about bike riding -
skating should send him through the roof. He worries much more about my
brittle bones more than I do<g>
Have fun and let us know how it goes.

I remember a story about Katherine Hepburn having to give up
skateboarding at 65 after finally breaking something. I want to be her
when I grow up.
Btw, Beverly - I'm thinking about getting a bike again <g>

Get out there and get that bike! I promise you'll love it as much as the
rollerblading. I was able to get 6 hours of biking in over the weekend and
loved every minute of it. I wanted to go again Sunday but the
granddaughters talked me into taking them swimming.

I have no doubt I'll love it! I've always been concerned about safety on
our narrow roads but now I'm thinking that I know the busy times of day.
Then there are the killer hills that I love walking up, but can't quite
wrap my mind around riding up.

I don't ride the roads very often. The town I live in has several bike
lanes separate from the sidewalks and streets. It makes it easy to get
around town on the bike. Many of the communities in the area are connected
by a bike trail so riding the road isn't necessary. We have over 200 miles
of bike trails in the area and it continues to grow each year.
Some hills just weren't made for bike riding<g> I've yet to conquer the
hill near my home. I've made it 3/4 of the way but I'll just have to keep
trying!
A mirror on the bike makes it a little more comfortable to ride in traffic.
You can see cars approaching without turning to look all the time.

Just be sure to rollerblade on flat surfaces. Bumpy roads do not do wheels
any good!
I've been rollerblading for YEARS and have had my share of crashes, but it's
probably one of my favourite forms of a workout... up there with hiking. In
the summer I often rollerblade to the gym (uphill) and back.
Have fun learning the ropes! You picked good teacher! ;)

Ooooooh, I am *so* envious! I used to skate all the time as a kid,
and bought a set of rollerblades back when I thought exercise alone
would make me lose weight (ah, the innocent times). I soon found
out that I couldn't balance 275 pounds the way I could 135 pounds,
and because I was so heavy, they killed my feet. Currently, they're
in the closet collecting dust. Once I hit my first goal of 199, I
want to get them out again. Congrats on finding a fun, new activity!

Yay Laurie! That is too cool! A couple of years back I thought it
would be a good idea, but somehow, 225 on rollerblades wasn't a great
idea -- hurt my feet and too tight on the calves. I'll have to break
mine out again. Ther "bike path" system here is incredible and I
should use it for more than daily walking!! :-)
Enjoy your blades!!!!!!

I'm always interested in new bike paths. Where are you located?

Hi Beverly --
Over a mile high in beautiful Boulder, CO.
"Boulder began encouraging bike commuting more than a decade ago.
Today the city boasts 35 miles of bike lanes, 48 miles of multiuse
paths, and 50 miles of bike routes. The town recently crafted a new
master plan to provide several crosstown bike travel routes. And each
year, Boulder turns national Bike to Work Day in June into Bike to
Work Week and offers free tune-ups, safety clinics, and "Walk and
Roll" events."

I walk the bike path daily, you can go across town, into the mountains
or out to the plains on the bike path system here. Really lovely, and
the above article only adresses the bike usage! :-)

Way to go, Laurie! I bought regular rollerskates last year and only tried them once -
it was impossible to deal with gravel, etc ... so maybe rollerblades would be worth a
try. I need to find a deal like you did!

The pavement I was on yesterday was fairly clean of sand & gravel, so I
don't know if you'd be any better off? It's amazing to me that I could
look ahead and see a *pebble* to avoid!
