break thru

I feel as though I have just made a real break thru this week!  I had been
getting very tired very quickly since starting the gym, and had been lucky
to complete a full workout that I would aim for.  My heart rate would be
higher than I would like (and my chest would hurt from astma related
issues...I did a stress test with the doctor, so know that it is not my
heart), and my feet and legs would just get so sore so quickly.  I am into
my third week now, and every day since saturday I have gone a little over 2
miles on the treadmill at 3 mph with no trouble at all (I was lucky to
complete 1 mile at 2.7 mph before), completed the "fast track circuit
training" every other day, and done several laps in the pool of swimming and
water walking after relaxing the muscles in the hot tub.  I have been
energized instead of exhausted at the end of each workout, and have not had
much of any soreness any more during the actual workout.  The  workout feels
much easier to me now as I am in the middle of it!  I am glad I didn't give
in to the toughness of getting started, because I now deeply look forward to
each workout.  I am finding it so incredibly relaxing now!!!  Everything
feels better after the workout...my breathing feels fuller and easier, I
feel energized, and I am falling asleep faster and sleeping far better over
all.  I am even starting to notice my appetite curbing thruout the day.  I
don't seem to get quite as hungry for the junk food, and am more satisfied
with less food.  I am definately getting off to a good start!!!  Oh, and I
finally found a tape measure, so plan to start taking measurements in the
morning.  Hopefully, some real results will start showing somewhere before
too long!  Even so, the gym feels very worth it to me just for the benefits
I have already  mentioned.  I don't plan to give up now based on a scale!!!

Sounds like you're doing wonderfully!  This is just how exercise is
supposed to make you feel, so clearly you're doing it right!

Remember to measure yourself *before* working out, as your muscles will be
swollen after your work out. (as my gym told me anyway, but it makes sense)

That's fantastic progress.  I'm sure you'll find it just gets easier as you
continue the exercise.

Thanks to all of you!  The hardest part is that the scales are showing no
real progress yet.  They are sort of fluctuating back and forth right now
(day to day) between 3 lbs or so (so one day it looks like I have lost
nothing so far, and the next 3 lbs down...just to be back up the next day).
I am thinking the best thing I could do for myself right now is to put the
scales away and just go by measurements for a while.  This is a hard thing
to do for some reason.  Those numbers have far too much importance to me I
think!!!  I did have a close friend mention to me today that I am looking
like I have lost a bit of weight.  She was asking how much I have lost,
because she thought my abdoman looked "trimmer".  That was a wonderful
little unexpected complement to come so soon!!!

first off, wow! Glad to hear working out is working so well for you
physically. I lived 1/2 block away from my gym 2000-2004 yet failed to
go often enough due to sheer laziness. :(

My advice:

measure the same time each day, preferably in the morning
weight fluctuates, but your average should trend down over enough time
so just look at that.

how I calculate my average is pretty (sorta) simple:

Step 1: First take today's weight and subtract yesterday's average,
eg:

250lb - 251lb = -1.0lb;

Step 2: Multiply that by 0.25:

-1.0 * 0.25 = -0.25;

Step 3: Add to yesterday's average:

251 + (-0.25) = 250.75lb

And that's your new average for the day!

This really reduces the weight swings, since the average moves pretty
slowly during both gain and loss periods. Looking at the average is
the only way daily weighing can make any sense for me or anyone who
doesn't eat, drink and do the exact same thing every day.

232/195/182 (actually the scale said 194.5 this morning, but the
average is 195.7)
