Amazing!  I've dropped 6.6 pounds in the last seven days!  I know it can't
continue at this rate, but I'm not worried.  I'm eating a healthy balance of
the right things in moderate amounts, averaging about 25 Weight Watchers
points per day, but in the last couple of days I've started getting more
active.  Since I am VERY close to my first goal (moving from "overweight" to
"normal") I decided to throw caution to the wind, make sure my feet were
protected and supported, and took a nice walk downtown.  2.5 miles total
distance, lugged back a gallon of milk, and no foot pain!  Yay!

Today I'm planning on walking downtown to the post office to mail a package.
I used to love to walk, if I take care of my feet I think I can get back
into that.  We have a nice little lake with a trail around it about two
blocks from my home, and a regional park not much farther from that.

Dewolla, I will use your example as inspiration for my mom and
especially dad.

Dewolla, you are doing an awesome job! You are a real inspiration and
I always look forward to reading your posts and hearing about your
progress!

2.5 miles is a wonderful accomplishment, what do you do to take care
of your feet? I am a walker and I noticed last summer that I had a
problem with one foot that took me a while to resolve. My small toe
rubbed against the side of my sneaker and would become painful. Once
the weather turned cooler the problem went away. I hope this summer
will be different now that I have purchased new walking sneaks and
extra padded socks. I am always interested in hearing ways to protect
my tootsies! :-)

How long is the trail around the lake?

Keep up the great work!!!

Thorlo socks are great for walking.  They're cushioned and absorb moisture.
They are slightly expensive but last forever.  You can find them at most
sports stores.

Since I used to (and maybe again!) backpack in the high sierras I learned a
few things.  First, I don't wash my feet with soap.  It softens them, and
you don't want to do that.  Just give them a good soaking in the tub or
shower and rub them down with a wet washcloth.  To toughen the feet wipe
them down twice a day with rubbing alcohol, then let them air dry.  Keep
your toenails clipped short, especially on the little toes.  Always use
talcum powder on your feet before a long walk, and I like to wear two pair
of socks; one thin pair next to the foot and a heavier pair over them.

And if you feel a "hot spot" forming (start to feel warmth in one spot from
friction and moisture) stop right there, take off your shoes and socks, and
deal with it.  Air dry your feet, set the socks out in the sun for a few
minutes to air out, then put a bandaid on the spot if you need to.

I think its about a mile or 1.5 miles around; I haven't made the first trip
yet!

This is fantastic progress!  I'm sure the extra activity has added to the
weight loss - keep it up.

I'm really happy for you! Walking is one of my favorite exercises...

Walking used to be my favorite too, but it has been out of the question for
at least seven years.  I can remember this tome last year, sitting in my
chair in the middle of the day, thinking about all the things I had to do,
and not even wanting to stand up because of all the foot pain.  What a
difference now!  Yesterday I walked to the post office and back (about 2
miles total) and I had some sore muscles in the top of my foot but the
arches were fine.

Way to go on the weight loss and, even more importantly, on the
walking!
